I am continuing to collect new entries for the Who Am I? game. My latest addlist has Dutch, New Zealanders, Scandanavians, some new Canadian & Australian entries, a bunch of mathematicians & physicists, and various random suggestions from players. I've looked at Japanese & Chinese entries, but many of them seem too obscure for the average FunTrivia player. I may still add some of the more famous people from those lists.
I am looking for suggestions for more candidates, particularly women, who are still very under represented. Do any of you have ideas for me to check out. Lists of not too obscure, unambiguous, deserving people are what I am looking for. They don't have to have explanatory text. Just names are fine. Many of my last additions came from lists of people on various nations postage stamps. Wikipedia is a major source for me, but I have to know what to look for among the millions of entries.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks to those who have already supplied entries.
Happy WAI Trivia!

I'm happy to think of some from the UK, but is there a list I can check, so that I don't give you names you already have?

In general terms, victims of Jack the Ripper, women jockeys, women explorers might yield a few more names.

I haven't played "Who Am I?" for a while so you may have already added more women authors. If not, this wikipedia page would be a good starting place.

Don't worry about duplication of names already in the game. It is somewhat surprising who is NOT in the game. If you don't want to take the time typing a list of names, I'll take suggestions of general categories you would like to see.

I just did a quiz on Australian women so some of the names I used may come in handy for you: Jane McGrath Anna Bligh Leanne Tander Liz Ellis Natasha Stott-Despoja Julia Gillard Cathy Freeman Melinda Gainsford-Taylor Tamsyn Lewis Nova Peris-Kneebone Megan Gale Jennifer Hawkins Fiona Wood Fiona Stanley These are some of the more well-known ones. Most Australian's would know who these ladies are

I actually remember seeing a good number of those UK names before. I've seen Weldon, Gaskell, Fry, Sanderson, Gunnell, Shaw, Ginghold, Roddick, Eliot, Blackwell, and probably a couple more, but at least those people are known worldwide. The list I saw previously from Australia is a tough one. I didn't see one name that I recognize. Those might belong in an Australia specific quiz.

Aaah, yet I have never heard of most of the Brits mentioned above! I'm sure there are many people out there famous in their own country with a legitimate claim to be put into the "Who Am I?" game.

I have to say that, with the exception of Cathy Freeman, none of those female Australian names even come close to ringing a bell.
Of course, then again, like you said, regionalism.

From the Aussie list, Nova Peris-Kneebone is worthy of entry for the name alone. I have no idea who she is though.

I think the point is to get more international folks in the game. That way we'll learn more.

I love it! A great name no doubt.
It's all good, shuehorn, I agree. I just thought it was funny (directed more towards myself than the actual list) that they were supposed to be well known but I only had heard of 1 person on the list.

Yes, Schoonie, and my comment wasn't directed at you, just more of a general observation related to the series of comments that these were obscure references. It all depends on your point of view. One person's obscure figure is another's beloved hero or heroine. And lest you think I recognize those names, I have a hard enough time with the people already in the game. I do love to learn about new folks though. Sue

Exactly. That's what is so cool is that you do learn something from it. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of people I learned about just from playing that game.
Of course, it can't hurt to lobby to get the people that we do know into the game, though, right?

There was only one on the Australian list I didn't recognise.
I would think at least some of the athletes mentioned would be known in all Commonwealth countries.
Nova Peris-Kneebone was a member of the very successful Australian Women's Hockey team and later competed in track. (for those who are interested and couldn't be bothered Googling it)
No more obscure than many athletes from the USA and other countries I have never heard of
Not all on the list are athletes and I guess if you aren't an Aussie it would depend on what you are interested in (some are very Internationally famous in their area) whether you would even recognise the name.
