Well, it is the week for "one step forward and two steps
back." Friday we re-seated the toilet in the powder room. Saturday it was leaking.
I had grouted around the base, only to find it was not drying. I discovered a drip from the
tank and my husband and I were discussing which part was leaking. I was all for the seal
between the tank and base, my husband insisted it had to be the bolts holding the tank on the
base.
I must insert here that my dear husband tries so very hard, but he simply is not a
plumber. What takes most people one or two tries, takes him 12 attempts before it get done
correctly. Well, possibly I exaggerate a bit. He does remind me of Dr. Huxtable and his
aggression in doing plumbing repairs. I try very hard not to let him do anything in the
plumbing arena. I am usually the handyman around the house, and he supplies male muscles when
needed.
So there we were "discussing" where the leak was when the painter came in and took a
look. He is a very nice man, does all sorts of things construction-wise, and started looking
at the toilet. His response was "Well, you may have a leak there, but you have a bigger
problem here!" Turns out the base of the toilet had cracked -- we had evidently tightened the
bolts down too hard and the porcelan slowly cracked.
Today it was off to Lowe's to buy a new
toilet. You know, all the toilets today are the "low flow" type toilet so as to not waste
water. (Thank you kindly Mr. Gore!) Ugh -- now we all know it's the "suck" that makes
the toilet work, and without that, it just is not the same! Without that, it just isn't the same. In any case, I installed the
base, being very careful not to tighten the bolts too much. Then I attached the tank and
the water supply. Carefully, ever so carefully, I turned on the water. No leak!
yet... I've flushed and flushed! Still no leak. So, keep your fingers crossed it
will still be dry tomorrow.
I must be prophetic! Three days before the pipe burst in
the kitchen we were discussing putting in a new floor. Oh dear, we're doing much more than
that now! And a couple days before the toilet broke I suggested maybe we should put in a new
one. Hmmm, I wonder if I tightened those bolts too hard on purpose!
Then I attacked the
kitchen. I finally got the trash compactor all cleaned up, looking all spiffy and new, managed
to get it back in it's proper spot under the (old) countertop and it, too, works again.
Yippee! And lastly, I at long last got the frame re-installed around the microwave in the
wall. It's been a long day and then a sleepless night. But, if the powder room is not
full of water (heaven forbid!) then we know the installation of our brand new potty is a
success!
