The heap of ruins.

The Ai literally means "the heap (of ruins)." This was a city in Canaan. The Book of Joshua records the eponymous prophet leading the Israelites in their capture of Canaan.

Today's archaeological site "Et-Tell" is thought to contain the Ai's ruins.
