Subject: 'Editors Discussing Quizzes' Series

Posted by: kyleisalive
Date: Mar 07 13

The editors have been talking (for years now, in fact) and we're always discussing different ways to improve quizzes and the site as a whole. As such, we've decided to give a bit more insight once in a while, specifically through this handy-dandy new feature-- 'Editors Discussing Quizzes'.

Every couple of weeks, a different editor will lead a discussion. The discussion will be a topic of their choosing and it will always be about an issue or an idea that we can bring up to improve your submissions in some way, whether it be to reinforce existing rules, give tips to engage with players, or otherwise. Other editors will be chiming in as we go along to give perspective and, of course, authors can add their comments.

Please keep in mind that the editors' words are the final say on authoring guidelines and rules-- editor posts will include a signifier of some sort. If you are not sure about a rule or guideline and you are not an editor, please make sure you know your stuff. The responses will be moderated to ensure we're not disseminating the wrong messages. ;)

The goal is to make our quizzes even better than they already are and hopefully we can all help you out with that.

This might be it for a while - it's getting harder to think of topics we haven't covered. Never say never, though - is there anything authors would like discussed?

Ummm...how about something about how to make the questions themselves more interesting without adding too much style? There are only so many ways to ask "What is...?"

I would be interested to read how Editors approach their jobs. How much effort goes in to individual quizzes. How much checking they do. What kind of quizzes are their nightmares and which are their dreams.

Are there any funny stories they care to relate, with names changed to save the blushes, obviously. Any statistics of interest. How many authors banned.

Some of that we can't discuss (banning, for instance, would be a no-go). Some of it might be doable; it does vary from editor to editor. Seems like a possibility. :)

It has been touched upon already in various other threads, as well as in the Forum, but with the number of authors who now have the green light to create photo quizzes (a figure that will inevitably grow), perhaps it might be timely for an in depth do's and don'ts guide to such.

Our photo quiz guidelines are continuing to evolve. We do have a definitive list of guidelines for the moment (in the Quiz Creation Notes in General) but we're still trying to sort through odd instances and the like. Sometime!

We're currently considering the possibility of the next EDQ.

Have your ponderings not been fruitful?

It's been on the backburner for a while; someday it'll be back.

I don't know if this has been brought up elsewhere, but I am curious if an EDQ might be possibly regarding controversial topics on FT. With the exception of perhaps Brain Teasers and FC (and even here there may arise some situations), but exactly when does a topic become too controversial? What do the editors suggest. Myself, I am not easily offended by things. At the same time, I understand that this is a family friendly website (my kids play quizzes on my account). But most categories can have topics that can be deemed offensive. For example, how to handle certain music lyrics (their meanings may be taken differently), literature has sparked issues for centuries regarding its content, crime and our interesting info regarding certain crimes, movies that have sensitive subject matter, etc. In general, I suppose I am curious about where the line is drawn. I am currently working on a quiz (and working with an editor) about certain crimes and their content matter. Are there guidelines for these situations?

Hi guys. I'm thinking of a few different quizzes i want to make, one about The Lone Ranger - What's the name of the episode?, one about Mario games True or False... if i can! i'm still deciding, and maybe others.
Any hints?

WordGirlFan, as was suggested to you by several FT editors and a couple authors in your other thread, you should contact the specific editors in the categories you want to write in about your specific ideas. They will work with you directly and can let you know if you can or cannot to do the types of quizzes you want to do / if the ideas are viable ones.

The editors in those categories can help you get quizzes online that follow their category's guidelines and that players will want to play. Reading the editor's comments in this series will also help you get a better understanding of what is and isn't allowed in quizzes, what players like to play, and how other authors like to write.

It might be time for an addition or additions to the Editor Discussing Quizzes series with the new quiz formats that have been introduced in recent years.
