Subject: Hangin' out in the kitchen

Posted by: FatherSteve

Today, after decades of waiting, I was rewarded with one portion of Turkey in my Author's Kitchen pantry and quickly turned it into Turkey Pot Pie. There were/are 159 "recipes" provided, all of which are now completed, and there is a wee legend at the bottom of the list which says "There are at least another 11 dishes that can be created here, if you can work out what is needed."

The page that answers the question "Who has made the most dishes?" says I have made 173, which makes sense, because a number of those are ones for which no recipe was provided on the aforementioned list and which I simply made up.

This leaves me with 349 ingredients, most of which I don't know what do with. Is there some point at which further recipes will be revealed or am I just supposed to guess which 11 could be made of those 349 items or what?

I just stumbled into the Author's Kitchen for the first time yesterday. I see I have hundred of unused ingredients and I'm still puzzling out what on earth all of it means! Maybe I'll understand someday. ;) Always a challenge on FT...

If you click on 'Cook a New Dish', you'll find a list of all your ingredients and some recipes, and you can start assembling dishes with sets of four ingredients. Have fun 'cooking'!

And when you discover that you cannot cook them all because you are missing one or more ingredients, add a daily visit to Check the Daily Market to see if one of them is on offer. If so, you can trade something of which you have an abundance (at one point, I had 10 pineapples), then make that dish.

Every time you have a new quiz put online, you get a new recipe and a handful of ingredients. Also, you get a credit for each single question. If you have three or more, they can be traded in for randomly-selected ingredients.

Some people with more time than me also explore creating a new dish by guessing what might be in it even though they don't have the recipe. You can see the list of all dishes and guess. I think I did manage a BLT!

"(at one point, I had 10 pineapples)"

I recommend those many mock-pseudo-ersatz Hawaiian dishes made up in the 1950s -- very trendy --- then.

Is it as simple as it seems? Do certain types of quizzes count as certain types of ingredients?? I feel like I'm being really dense but I feel like there's a code here somewhere... ;) Do I just have to figure it out through trial and error?

The allocation of ingredients is quite random - but like the Word Wizard, that doesn't mean you won't get clumps. Every time I get a quiz online, as soon as I have thanked the editor who facilitated it I head off to see the new recipe, and whether I can make any of the unfinished ones in my list. Any missing ingredients are a different colour, so I can tell at a glance what can or cannot be made. Since I have so many ingredients, I don't even try to work out which ones just arrived.

I traded in most of my pineapples, but the market is still refusing to offer me the beef and onions I recently ran out of.

Is the goal to get as many recipes listed as possible? Is "making" a recipe just getting enough ingredients for one, or is it writing a quiz or something?

You get five new ingredients every time you get a quiz (or a crossword) online, and one new ingredient for every three approved single questions. To create a recipe, you have to combine four different ingredients. The trick is, you don't know what you might need for a particular recipe. In general, you will get a new recipe when your quiz goes online, but this does not always happen. You can also try combining ingredients at random, and sometimes you will get lucky and create a recipe.

The kitchen game is an extra inducement to write quizzes and questions for the site, in the same way as the new art collection one. The reward is in making the dishes, especially the ones where you don't have the recipe. Treat it as a fun addition to the satisfaction of creating quizzes.

Thanks, everyone! I see I was trying to make it more difficult than it was. ;)

rhetorical question: Why does the market only offer the ingredients of which I have ten or more, and never one of the very common ones which I need to complete the recipes on my cook book? I want beef and onions, not celery and broccoli. :(

The last ingredient I needed (can't remember what it was) took MONTHS to the point where I was convinced of conspiracy.

@kyleisalive: so I'm not the only one thinking that something shady is afoot :D. I have just seven recipes left, and every time one of my quizzes goes online I get every kind of ingredient but those I need.

I have an answer to your question, LT.

You see Terry can foresee the future. By setting up the Market ingredients the way he did so many years ago he was helping everyone prepare for the past few years and immediate future.

The kitchen shortages are due to supply chain issues. Terry was simply preparing us for life in the 2020s.

Haven't had a recipe, after a quiz went online, for a while.
Is it just my luck or lack of recipes?

It is not luck, so it must be that you have received all the recipes that are currently available.
