The Commitments Trivia Questions

1. After shutting the door on the first person to respond to Jimmy's ad, his father asked if the band needed a singer. What did he do next?

From Quiz
The Commitments

Answer: Sang an Elvis Presley song

Mr Rabbitte (Colm Meaney) was a big Elvis Presley fan, as evidenced by the fact that Elvis' picture hung above the pope's on the wall of his home, so he launched into "Can't Help Falling in Love" which Elvis had sung in the film "Blue Hawaii". Jimmy (Robert Arkins) stopped him saying that Elvis didn't sing the right kind of music for his band. A procession of performers of varied styles and talent followed. Eventually the band came together, including trumpeter Joey "The Lips" Fagan, who claimed to have played with B.B. King (amongst many others) and Billy the drummer who could provide transport.

From Quiz The Commitments

Answer: Dublin soul

One of Jimmy's favourite artists was soul great James Brown, recordings of whom he has the band watch for inspiration. His explanation why their sound should be Dublin soul, even though they were not black, was that "the Irish are the blacks of Europe, and Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland". He went even further, to note that Northsiders held that distinction in the city of Dublin.

8. Who told the band they were named The Commitments?

From Quiz The Commitments

Answer: Joey

The male members of the band were in a garden shed at Joey's residence, talking about various aspects of the band. When the name of the band was raised, Jimmy said "Joey knows", and though the scene cut to the three girl singers arriving, it could be taken that Joey told them in the interim. When the focus returned to the shed, the band members were asking questions about the name's meaning and spelling, but were distracted by the "Commitmentettes" descending a ladder, having climbed over a wall.

From Quiz The Commitments

Answer: Above a pool/snooker hall

They had use of a large storage area above the pool hall for two months whilst the owner was "away" (unless he got time off for good behaviour!), on the condition they left it in the same poor state in which they found it. After the band had cleared a space amongst the furniture and other odds and ends that were stored there, the band moved in with their instruments and set about rehearsing, "Mustang Sally" being one of the songs they worked on perfecting.

14. Where did The Commitments get the piano they used for rehearsals?

From Quiz The Commitments

Answer: Steven "borrowed" it from his granny.

As Steven and three others struggled to get the piano up the stairs to the rehearsal space, one of them asked Steven where he got it. He said it was his granny's and someone thought that was nice of her. Steven then explained that she didn't know he'd taken it and would probably not miss it as she didn't use the front room a lot. Steven (Michael Aherne) was the piano player/keyboardist of the band, and also played organ at church.

From Quiz The Commitments

Answer: He was electrocuted.

Deco (Andrew Strong), the lead singer, became overenthusiastic in swinging the mike stand around whilst he performed, and made contact with Derek's bass, shorting out everything in the hall. Jimmy explained while they were in the hospital waiting room that it was important to keep the power from the amps and the mike separate, and that Derek (Ken McCluskey) had become the earth for a moment. Happily, Derek was OK and the band could continue. Outspan (Glen Hansard) was the lead guitarist, and was actually good friends with Derek.

Billy (Dick Massey) was not only the drummer, but the one who provided the band's transport, so when he left, because he couldn't abide Deco, they needed another vehicle as well as a replacement drummer. Tough guy Mickah (Dave Finnegan) became the drummer, and also wielded the crowbar that opened the door to the space from which they liberated a Mr Chippy van, their new wheels. 28. What type of music did Dean, the sax player, show a liking for, much to the dismay of both Jimmy and Joey?

From Quiz The Commitments

Answer: Jazz

During one performance, Dean (Felim Gormley) played a few bars that were definitely more jazz than soul, and Joey called him out for it. Jimmy was also upset at this straying from the band's sound. When Dean turned up for what turned out to be their final gig with what Jimmy described as a "jazz haircut", the manager (Jimmy) was not at all happy. The gig at a small club was meant to be their big break, as Joey had promised to get his "old friend", Wilson Pickett, to come and jam with the band, and there were reporters and even a record company representative in the crowd. When Pickett hadn't turned up by closing time, things spiralled out of shape, words were had and punches and kicks thrown, and everyone quit the band. As Jimmy walked away, a car stopped to ask directions to the club, and when Jimmy told him it was closed, the driver asked Mr Pickett if he wanted to go back to the hotel.
