The ten matches in the final qualifying round (aka the play-off round) will be completed on Wednesday night 28th August. The 10 winners will join the 22 teams who were exempt until the group phase. The draw for the group phase will take place the day after on Thursday 29th August. If you've got a few hours to kill and/or have an insomnia attack and can't hit the sack, you can read the complete details of the qualifying & exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2013-14. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there maybe a few qualifiers whose names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences on Tuesday 17th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and 19 rounds later the UEFA CL Final will be played on Saturday 24th May 2014 in Lisbon, Portugal at Estadio da Luz (aka Stadium of Light) - the home ground of Benfica. There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 11th December and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 18th February 2014. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points
default
full-time
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts).
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time or penalty shootouts are ignored.
if you pick a game solo (or one of two), you score a bonus point.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. |
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as there are 4 time zones in Europe, and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 4 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. No one has successfully defended their UEFA title .. gtho4 won it last year by from paper_aero and Howie72 who dead-heated for 2nd (paper_aero collected silver on a countback). Dizart was 4th a mere point in arrears and N-Bomb was 5th, a further point in arrears. Two players finished last year's comp without a wooden spoon .. their spoon-less streaks will continue into this year's tipping comp:32 weeks : paper-aero (his last spoon was in Round 6 of the 2011-12 comp).

Dizart picked 7/8 .. he missed the draw in Copenhagen, but still collected 8 pts as he picked Real Sociedad to lose at home for a bonus point.
wwe84 collected the wooden spoon but avoids last place, as he also picked Real Sociedad to lose at home.
N-Bomb & paper_aero finished last year's comp without a wooden spoon .. their streaks continue (see below). |

. No-one picked the loss at home by Chelsea, but young ozzz2002 picked all of the other seven games for the weekly win. He flies up the table from 9th to 2nd!
KrivoyRog received a bonus point for picking a draw at Chelsea (the rest of us picked a home win) .. ozzz2002 and illiniman14 were the only ones to pick a Napoli win over Borussia Dormund.
Between us we had a strike rate of 66.6%, the 8th best strike rate in the ten years we've been running the UEFA comp .. the Record Book has been updated (see above in red).
N-Bomb & paper_aero continue their spoon-less streaks (see below) .. wwe84 collects back-to-back spoons and now stands on the last rung solo.
