Chelsea lost, Barcelona lost, FC Porto didn't win, and none of us picked any of those three games. That left us with a possible maximum of 5 correct picks and just one weekly winner - wwe84 - and this curious statistic: after nine weeks he's been in 8 of the weekly awards ceremony, no-one has more weekly wins than wwe84, no-one has more spoons than wwe84, and no-one has more bonus points than wwe84.

Five of the top 7 spots ended up in the kitchen with a wooden spoon each .. paper-aero was one of the five swept into the kitchen. This brought the curtain down on his long-running spoon-less streak, at 40 wks. His last spoon was more than 2 yrs ago on 19th Oct 2011.

The first five spots are separated by 2 points and then there's a gap of another 2 pts to the next five, who are also separated by 2 pts.

New lows for the season - Sypher and LeoDaVinci.
New highs - srini701 (once again) and wwe84.

The next round is less than six hours away .. the game in Russia, CSKA Moscow v Bayern, kicks-off in 3 hours. Let's see how many upsets this round will bring.

During the eleven years we've had the Champions League comp, we've had just eight perfect picks (by six different players). It's now nine .. Dizart is this week's winner with a perfect 8/8. The Honour Roll still has the same names on it, as Dizart has done it before! With that humungous effort he moves into equal first place with illiniman14.

srini701 collects the wooden spoon with 4/8. It's his first for the season.

Unlike the previous round, there were no major upsets this time. Between us we averaged 78.6% which is 6.3/8 .. we've exceeded that stat just once over the last eleven years! The first five spots are separated by 3 pts and the next five are also separated by 3 pts .. there's a gap of 2 points between these two groups.

New low for the season - LeoDaVinci.
New high - Howie72.

We have now passed the half-way mark in this comp. There are two rounds left in the group stage, and then we have a two-month mid-winter break to the start of the knock-out rounds.

Once again there wasn't much movement in the rankings this round .. spots 1 to 8 remain unchanged but are now further apart .. 8 pts covered those 8 spots last week, it's now out to 11 pts. It wasn't that many last year .. a mere 4 points covered 1st to 8th after 12 rounds in last year's comp.

Dizart continues to set a cracking pace out front. His third consecutive weekly win sees him extend his lead out to 4 points; srini701 was the other weekly winner. He climbs up the ladder to join the first eight. Sypher collected back to back spoons to fall to his lowest position all season.

New low for the season - illiniman14, Sypher, LeoDaVinci.
New season high - nobody.

That brings us to the end of the group stage. So far we've had 96 picks .. another 84 picks and we greet the judges at the finish post.

We now have a rest through winter until Tue 18th Feb 2014 and the start of the Knock-Out Round, when the Champions League comes out of hibernation. The draw for the KOR will take place next week on Mon 16th Dec: www.uefa.com

The 1st legs of the KO Round saw six away wins 1-1-6. The 2nd legs was a mirror image with six home 6-1-1.

The podium is very crowded this week .. 13 players lodged picks for the second leg and 9 of us scored a weekly win! ozzz2002 collected the wooden spoon.

illiniman14 is this round's winner and flies up the table into 3rd place, replacing paper_aero. He was 8 points off the lead last week .. he's halved that to 4 pts. Dizart and gtho4 now have company .. they were 6 pts clear of the field last week.

There were two wooden spoons awarded: ozzz2002 and Howie72 (his first for the season).

There were upsets galore in the quarter-finals, which generated a mammoth 19 bonus points .. illiniman14 collected four of them! paper_aero scored his first bonus point for the season, to fill the last blank in that column.

Barcelona were eliminated by Atletico Madrid, who last played in the semi-finals 40 yrs ago: European Cup 1974. They beat Glasgow Celtic in the semis but lost the final to Bayern Munich.

The elimination of Barcelona saw 5 of us lose our advance pick for the winner, 9 of us lost a finalist, and 11 of us lost a semi-finalist (see post above this one). The draw for the semi-finals will take place on Friday 11th April. The first leg of the semis is a fortnight away: UEFA ( 17 ) Tue 22nd April.

PaulE is this round's winner and moves up the table into 4th place. He was 5 pts off the podium last week, now it's a mere 2pts.

Last week Howie72 collected his first wooden spoon. This week he collects his second .. dg_dave collected the other wooden spoon.

There were upsets in both semis. Atletico v Chelsea FT was picked by no-one, which generated three bonus points, and Real v Bayern FT was picked by three, which generated the other three bonuses.

The margin out front is now 6 pts, and the next 6 pts cover 5 players. We have two rounds left: the second leg of the semis, and the final.

Between us we averaged a strike rate of 30.3% .. we hit pay dirt with just 34 correct picks. They were so scarce that there was room at the start of this post to show every single one of them, in blue .. all 34 of them.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich were both at home and both of them were favourites to progress to the final .. and they're gone; both of them crashed out. The Champions League final at the end of the month will be an all-Spanish affair .. a local derby between Atletico and Real played a few hundred miles west of Madrid in Lisbon, Portugal.

KrivoyRog was this round's winner with 7/8 .. he picked the lot, including advance picks, except for the FT result Bayern Munich v Real Madrid. He flew up the table into 5th spot, a new high for the season .. wwe84 was next best with 5/7. He also set a new personal high for the season.

Three of us scored zilch, a big fat zero and a wooden spoon each .. gtho4 saw his lead out front evaporate, paper_aero fell to 7th, a new low for the season, and ozzz2002 fell to 11th, which equalled his lowest position for the season.

There is one round left and, of the 8 pts on offer, five will come from the advance pick for the winner .. and there are only three players with a live pick! Dizart, KrivoyRog and srini701 are the only players who can score 5pts for their advance pick. The rest of us will receive either 1 pt or 2 pts for our advance pick (see post above this).

Every position on the podium is open .. we won't know who's on the podium with a medal until the full-time whistle blows in Lisbon. There are seven players still in this .. the first six plus srini701 in 8th (i.e. whoever's within 3 pts of 3rd or 8pts of 3rd if you have a live pick). The final is three weeks away: UEFA ( 19 ) Sat 24th May_FINAL .

It says Chelsea advanced and wwe84 had 2 correct advance tips while KrivoyRog didn't get his, but the scores above look to be correct.
