The new trend for holiday decorating is to have it blend more with your own personal style. In other words, don't feel that you must use the traditional red and green if that just isn't you! Instead, choose your own decorating themes.

One way to use themes effectively is with Christmas trees. Small Christmas trees , especially, are a great alternative for apartment dwellers and the elderly, who may need to scale down their holiday decorating. Small trees also make nice gifts for friends and centerpieces for your own table. Here are just a few ideas for small themed trees and ornaments you can make for them:

Snowman Tree

The snowman tree offers a very traditional look and uses a popular collectible --snow people--as its main "ingredient."

To make snowballs, simply cut a narrow, half-inch-wide strip of quilt batting; form a ball by wrapping in one direction, then turning 90 degrees and wrapping some more , until you have a little snowball. Tuck in the end.

Bohemian Tree

You'd expect a bohemian tree to be artistic and creative, and this one is! With its vibrant color and drifting ribbons, it fits well with traditional or contemporary design styles.

To make flocked ornaments, purchase a flocking kit, which includes colored glue and flocking material. With the glue, draw a simple design onto the glass ornament of your choice; sprinkle on the flocking material. Let dry completely and hang on tree.

Children's Tree

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without children, and this tree, bedecked with gingerbread people, bandana ornaments and gumdrop rings, definitely gives a childlike feel to any decor.

To make a gumdrop ornament, string six large gumdrops together on a piece of wire ; tie in a circle.

Adirondack Tree

This relaxed style works well with casual decor and log cabin looks.

To make seed and nut ornaments, spray a Styrofoam ball with adhesive, then simply roll it in your choice of birdseed or lentils. Embellish with bits of moss if desired .
