I am trying to drastically cut back on the amount of salt I use. (I use WAY too much now) Does anyone have any suggestions for other spices or flavorings or healthy ways to cut back on salt?

Hi, men crave salt more than women according to some sources, so it's harder to cut down.
Is there anything to the lemon theory? I've heard that marinating fish or other things in lemon takes away the need for salt.
I would use other seasonings though but not overdoe it.

HI Geek2.0,

When I was told years ago that I needed to do the same, I researched a lot of books and healthy eating types of reading. I learned that most of your prepackaged foods and/or precooked foods are loaded with salt. So I just started with trying to stay away from those things. Try and cut down on pork, ie: lower your bacon piece count, Sausage intake, and any seasonings that have salt as an added ingredient. Now-a-days I don't even add any salt to my cooking of any kind nor do I add it to the items on a plate. I have learned to like better the natural taste of food. And natural seasonings. If you would like more tips PM me and let me know, I have great marinade recipes and dishes that do not require a bit of salt.

Good Luck! I know it was hard for me at first, but it can be done!

You could consider using a reduced sodium salt. Saxa do one called So-Low and there's one called Lo-Salt. We switched some time ago and have been quite happy with the products,

I personally do not care for salt and freak out when others people a lot of salt in the food. You can go to Macy's or your local department store and buy a electric steamer. A steamer is so easy. Just put whatever you want in it, turn the dial to however many minutes you want your food to cook in and then it rings when it is done. It is great and you do not need salt or oil to cook your food.

Another good way to cut back on salt is to just cook your own food so you know exactly what is in it. Try also searching on teoma.com for tips and low salt recipes.

I hope that helps.

If it is too hard for you to cut back on salt, try low sodium salt, anytime someone has heart problems this is what is recommended. In my opinion it tastes just the same, only better for you.

There are actually differing viewpoints on the value of low salt.

Although it is lower in sodium, which has its advantages, it is also much higher in potassium which could, in some circumstances, lead to other problems.

Do a little more research yourself before making a decision, and if there's a medical reason for your effort to reduce salt intake then consult your own doctor.
