This year's winner of the Man Booker prize for English fiction is Eleanor Catton for her novel 'The Luminaries - a murder mystery set during the New Zealand Gold Rush of 1866.
At just 28, Eleanor Catton is the youngest ever recipient in the prize's 45 year history.

I gather that there's another record (besides youngest winner) involved here--it's the longest book to win the prize (at 832 or 848 pages, according to various accounts).

I read the book: it's fabulous. And however long, it reads REALLY fast. I became a fan of Catton's when I read her first novel, "The Rehearsal," a VERY different kind of book.

Thanks, shortthumbz, I gather it is a history/crime novel. There seems to be a lot of really quality writing in this genre lately. I have already extolled the virtues of Tana French's crime writing. I shall definitely try Catton next.
