The FA Cup, which started in 1872, is the world's oldest football knock-out competition .. season 2014 is the 133rd edition. The preliminary qualifying rounds started in mid-August. The Football Association has accepted entries from 737 teams for this season's FA Cup (last year had 758 entrants), comprising 645 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The league teams are the 44 teams in the FAPL (20) and FLC (24), and the 48 teams in League One and League Two (24 each).- the 4th and last qualifying round for the 645 non-league teams
will be played on Saturday 26th October.
- the 32 survivors from the prelims & qualifiers join the 48 teams
in L1 and L2 in the First Round (equals 80 teams). - the 20 survivors from the Second Round will join the FAPL and
FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams). - from there it's a straight knock-out through to the final in May.
This year's FA Cup tipping comp runs for 7 months over 10 rounds from Saturday 9th November 2013 until Saturday 17th May 2014 (FA Cup Round 1 through to the Final). Although there are 10 rounds in the tipping comp we only lodge picks on 8 occasions:- the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
- the Second Round has 20 games .. 4 games are ignored.
- the Third Round of 32 games is be split into two rounds of 16 games each.
- that's 5 tipping rounds which, with the remaining 5 rounds of the FA Cup, gives us 10 tipping rounds.
- we also have advance picks so that each round is worth 16 pts.

3rd Round : Saturday 4 January 2014
4th Round : Saturday 25 January 2014
5th Round : Saturday 15 February 2014
6th Round : Saturday 8 March 2014 quarters
7th Round : Saturday 12 April 2014 semi-finals
8th Round : Saturday 17 May 2014 FA Cup Final The rules for the FA Cup tipping comp are simple (they're the same as last year): points

upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick .. home win, draw, away win
in other words, it's always at 90 minutes.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts);
but if the wooden spoon score is higher, default is the ws score; default for
the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
you score a bonus point if you pick a game solo .. or one of two players if we
have 10+ runners; or one of three if 18 or more runners.
one bonus point for 11+/16;
14/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from HM).
no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win;
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. |

Last year's FA Cup comp had an all-time record field when 21 runners rolled up (as was the case the year before). This year we had 17 runners line-up at the barriers to participate .. the no shows were: doomed, superhooppete, toocool4u and trev1. There are no rookies in this year's comp.
The first round of this year's comp had just one game picked by everyone .. and all of us got it wrong.
Three players picked 10+/16 for a bonus point, and two of them are our are early season leaders: wwe84 & George95.
ozzz2002 collected the first spoon on offer with stupendous picks of 3/16. He failed to beat default .. ditto gtho4, who also failed to beat default.
Round 1b will be completed on Monday night when the last First Round game is played.

FussBudget is this round's winner with 12/16 .. add in a truckload of bonus points and he flies up the table from 2nd last to one point off the podium! They were his first bonus points for the season .. ditto N-Bomb and gtho4, leaving just one blank in that column. Dizart is the one who's still looking for his first bonus point.
George95 retains his position out front .. in the first two rounds he was joint leader, he's now all on his lonesome. Apart from the leader and the tail-ender, wwe84 was the only player to retain his or her spot from last week.
The next round will be played on the first weekend of the new year, Saturday 4th January 2014. The draw for the Third Round will take place tomorrow .. and the tipping thread will be up the end of next week, when the Round Two replays have been completed.

Upsets galore saw srini701 and wwe84 take the weekly win with a strike rate below 0.5 at 7/16 .. and, depsite failing to lodge a pick for one game, wwe84 takes over front-running duties from George95, who slipped back to 3rd place on a countback.
dg_dave was the big mover, up five places. He picked one of the upsets solo -- the loss at home by Aston Villa, to a team from League One. This was only the 13th time in the history of the FA Cup that a team in the top tier of English football lost at home to a team from the bottom two divisions of The Football League (see post above this one).
Dizart scored his first bonus points, which filled-in the last blank in that column.
Round 3b will be posted when the remaining Round 3 games are completed on Wednesday 15th January.

Four errors located, and now fixed: 1. PaulE didn't add,
2. George95 hi-lo was wrong,
3. srini701 didn't add across either,
4. hi-lo for srini701 was also wrong. There were three basic problems here: (a) can't read my own writing,
(b) I can't add big numbers,
(c) Rochdale brought back memories of Colchester. One thousand apologies for the stuff-up.

PaulE scores a weekly win to join wwe84 out front. He is the 4th player to have a go at leader.
ozzz2002 and N-Bomb are the other weekly winners; a first for the season for both of them .. ozzz2002 finally moves off the bottom rung.
There were six wooden spoons handed out this week, three of them were firsts for the season.
The next round of the FA Cup will be played tomorrow week: FA Cup - 4th Round - Sat 25 Jan. Please note that two of the 16 games have been brought forward to Friday night. There are 33 teams listed as there is still one 3rd Round replay to go.
