Midnight Madness has come and gone once again, and we are inching closer to the NCAA basketball season. This is the second iteration of our NCAA basktball comp, and here are the rules: 1. One point per tip 2. Deadline will be midnight Friday FT time with a short grace period of 2-3 hours, except for week 1 which will be midnight Thursday (with grace period). Late tips get a 1-point deduction. 3. Default tips are road teams, or those listed first for neutral-site games. 4. Late starters will enter at the lowest score at that time, and after 4 weeks of not tipping you will be considered inactive. 5. End-of-season tiebreakers are HOF v. WS differential; then HOFs; then bonus points. - This comp is separate from the March Madness comp Bonus Points 1. One point for solo picks or one of two 2. One point for picking 13+/15 3. Ineligible for bonus points if tipper picks all home teams or all but one -The team listed second is considered the 'home' team, even for neutral-site games.

Welcome back to college basketball! Starting things off with a bang was N-Bomb, who tipped 14/15, but could not grab the bonus as he picked only 1 away team (or at least that’s how the original schedule read, as VCU ended up hosting Illinois State). Taking advantage of that 1-point swing were George95, Sypher, and illiniman14, who all went 13/15 but got the perfect bonus.
On a week that gave us two top-25 matchups, a top-25 upset, and two cancelled games on aircraft carriers last year, the opening weekend provided few thrills this year. Every ranked team won their games, although #18 Connecticut had their hands full while taking on Maryland in Brooklyn.
On Saturday, defending champions Louisville appeared to be having problems pulling away from a pesky College of Charleston, but a late 22-3 run sealed the game. On a personnel note, Kevin Ware, who broke his leg in the NCAA Tournament, returned during Louisville’s final preseason game and made his first shot. Coach Rick Pitino says he is likely to return full-time in a matter of weeks.
To compensate for a tame weekend, the upcoming week will prove to be very interesting. On Tuesday, #1 Kentucky takes on #2 Michigan State and #4 Duke will play #5 Kansas as part of the State Farm Champions Classic in Chicago. That same day, #10 Florida heads to Madison to take on #20 Wisconsin and an intrastate matchup hits the east coast when #24 VCU plays #14 Virginia.

The field gets stretched out a bit this week, but N-Bomb and George95 remain out front with impressive HoF performances, both being mystified by 3 upsets - Iowa State, Illinois State, and Belmont. The two other previous frontrunners were surpassed by the other HoF performer paper_aero, who called the Illinois State victory and earned himself a solo bonus in the process.
The big news from the week happened on Tuesday, as the State Farm Champions Classic took place in Chicago. #2 Michigan State dominated the first half against the fabulous freshmen of #1 Kentucky and held off a furious comeback to take over the top spot 78-74. After that game, #5 Kansas pulled away in the second half against #4 Duke to win 94-83.
Not to be outdone, #14 VCU hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left to put away #25 Virginia and unofficially win the title of best team in the state. #11 Florida took a frigid trip up north to #20 Wisconsin, and despite an early 16-4 lead, the Gators fell to their hosts 59-53.
The weekend also held a nice slate of game, even if powerhouses weren’t going toe-to-toe. #10 Ohio State went to #17 Marquette and simply shut them down 52-35. Then the upsets hit. #7 Michigan went to Iowa State and last year’s upset-heavy Cyclones surprised the Wolverines 77-70.
The most surprising game of the weekend took place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. 3-point heavy Belmont shot the lights out with 15 3’s as they took down #12 North Carolina.

Close to entering rarified air, N-Bomb collects his third-straight HoF performance – a new record for this young comp. Joining him were illiniman14, Howie72, and wwe84. On the other end of the spectrum were dg_dave and ozzz2002, who earned the highest spoon performance of this comp ever as well with 9/15.
The reason the scores were fairly close is due to the lack of big upsets in our comp this week. Out in beautiful Hawaii (as wwe84 and ozzz2002 predicted), Dayton rode a 56-point second half to a strong upset over #11 Gonzaga, on their way to a 3rd-place finish in the Maui Invitational. #25 Marquette, fresh off a poor performance last weekend, lost to Arizona State in Tempe 79-77.
That’s not to say no other upsets happened over the weekend, but many occurred in non-scheduled preseason tournaments that we could not pick. The Puerto Rico Tip-Off saw Georgetown pull down #10 VCU 84-80 as well as Charlotte knocking off #14 Michigan 63-61. #24 North Carolina, coming from an upset themselves, outshot #2 Louisville 93-84 at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
A one-point swing would have thrown the group for a loop and wwe84 to his own HoF performance – that being the one point that separated Duke and Vermont when the Blue Devils pulled it out 91-90. Colorado also pulled off a mild upset over Harvard, the heavy favorite in the Ivy League.

Sypher and BxBarracuda take the HoF in a hotly-contested week, both correctly predicting the quasi-upset of Iona over last year’s NCAA Tournament darling Florida-Gulf Coast and DePaul’s unforeseen win over Oregon State. At the other end, wwe84 tried for a few solo picks and was thwarted, giving him the spoon for the week.
The game of the weekend was actually on Monday, as #12 Connecticut hit a buzzer-beater to take down #15 Florida. Another trilling matchup surely warranted some grumbling from our tippers as they looked over the games, as once again Long Beach State was participating in a pick, but they (thankfully) put up a valiant fight at Washington before going down in double overtime.
The leaderboard was fairly stagnant this week, with only paper_aero moving more than 1 spot up or down. N-Bomb retains his 1-point advantage, but is denied a spot in the FT HoF by being denied his fourth consecutive HoF by a point.

For now, this is N-Bomb’s game and we’re all tipping in it, as he picks up another HoF to extend his lead to a season-high 3. Joining him on this week’s podium were Howie72, dg_dave, and wwe84 – the last of which has either had a HoF or spoon every week so far this year. Every single one of them was tripped up by Arkansas’s victory over Clemson, otherwise they would’ve all had perfect bonus points. On the other end was themonarch, earning his first spoon of the year and taking over last in the process.
What a week it was for college basketball! Our second game of the weekend started a trend, as Texas hit a 3 to go up by 1 at Temple with 12 seconds left in overtime, and held on for the 81-80 win. Not too long after, Colorado welcomed their former conference rival #6 Kansas to town and sent them packing, as a last-second running 3-pointer found nothing but net and the Buffaloes snapped a 19-game losing streak to the Jayhawks 75-72. Somewhat off the beaten path saw another Colorado team head to overtime, but this time Denver came up short to Mercer 64-63.
The first upset of the day actually came in Columbia, as still-undefeated Missouri throttled UCLA in the second half to win 80-71. Meanwhile, surprising #8 Wisconsin held serve at home to win an intrastate meeting against slowly-fading Marquette 70-64. #2 Arizona also enjoyed a home court advantage with a close 63-58 win over UNLV. With Monday came the final dramatic victory, as Mississippi hit a 3 to force overtime at home against #13 Oregon, but gave up 26 in the 5 minutes of overtime to lose 115-105.

This was a week of movement on the leaderboard, as illiniman14 takes over first place from N-Bomb, as the former grabs a HoF and the latter grabs a spoon, joined by dg_dave and ozzz2002. This was N-Bomb's first spoon in the NCAA Basketball comp as a whole, and only leaves gtho4, George95, and illiniman14 as the sole spoonless tippers across all 24 weeks of this comp.
The game of the weekend came from the #1 team in the country, as Arizona found itself down 8 with less than 7 minutes to go in Ann Arbor, but Michigan couldn’t hold on and #1 held on to win 72-70. Chapel Hill provided the top 25 with the only upset of the weekend, as #11 Kentucky took on the #18 Tarheels of North Carolina and in the process suffered their third loss of the season 82-77, really putting a damper on the hoped 40-0 year. *chuckle*
Outside of the top 25, Northern Iowa provided the standings with a little havoc (get it?), giving ozzz2002 and wwe84 a solo bonus with its upset over once-#10 VCU. Outside of the comp, #5 Michigan State saw a scare as they barely escaped Oakland 67-63.
And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a certain orange and blue team showed up in the comp this week, and those loveable Fighting Illini… lost. Enough about that game, and on to next week, where we see them again!

Following his first hiccup of the season, N-Bomb rebounds with a HoF to regain a share of the lead, accompanied by Howie72 by picking 12 on the day. Both would have received a perfect bonus (and N-Bomb would have re-claimed the lead for himself) if not for Mercer pulling off the upset at Ole Miss. However, wwe84 saw that upset coming, although that didn’t prevent him from picking up another spoon alongside dg_dave. Twice has the spoon been as high as 9/15 in the short history of this comp, and both times dg_dave was unlucky enough to grab the spoon. We also welcome in cubswins2323 for his first involvement in our humble comp.
Two upsets hit the top 25 this weekend, but only one managed to hit our comp. As paper_aero, ozzz2002, and wwe84 foresaw, Kansas State defended its home state (being played in Wichita) against #21 Gonzaga. Elsewhere, Florida State played on a “neutral court” as well (in Florida) and fought off previously-undefeated #22 Massachusetts.
The game of the weekend had 3 candidates. In Columbus, #3 Ohio State found itself down 58-50 with a mere 50 seconds left against Notre Dame, but 2 steals, 3 shots, and 5 free throws later found them up 61-60 with 16 seconds left, and won 64-61. In Eugene, undefeated #13 Oregon tied Brigham Young with 59 seconds left, but neither team made another shot in regulation. In overtime, tied 84-84, both teams kicked on the burners and Oregon pulled out another close game 100-96. But my pick was the game in St. Louis: close the entire game save the first 8 minutes, Illinois and Missouri found themselves in a classic Braggin’ Rights game. With Illinois up 63-61 and 16 seconds left, Missouri hit an open 3-pointer to vault into a 64-63 lead. On the ensuing possession, a bad foul put Tracy Abrams on the line, and easily made both free throws for an Illinois 65-64 lead. With a fumbled inbound pass and wild attempt to end the game, Illinois gave the Tigers their first loss, and me some real hope the first time this season.
Merry Christmas!

The Mizzou-Illini game really was a tossup for me. It was close like I thought it would be. Great rivalry. It's no Mizzou-KU from the Norm Stewart (Sit Down, Norm!-Ol Big 8 habits die hard. I HATED Mizzou! One of my fave Danny Nee Era moments was when the Huskers came back from 13 points down with 3+ minutes left in 1988 to win 70-68. Yeah, I researched! LOL) Era, but still a great rivalry.

After 26 weeks, the seemingly impossible has happened: ozzz2002, in a genius moment, picked an absolutely perfect 15/15, earning him not only a spot in our own HoF, but the FT HoF as well (and a solo bonus to boot for taking Pepperdine alongside dg_dave)! On the other side, after 26 weeks, gtho4 picks up his first spoon, leaving only illiniman14, who takes over first alone once again this week, and George95 as the only tippers who are spoonless over the entirety of the comp.
Saturday provided the best matchups of the weekend, as well as the only top-25 upset. #18 Kentucky took their size advantage and got their first top-25 win against in-state rival #6 Louisville. The winner of that game the past 2 years has won the national championship. The other top-25 matchup put unbeaten #2 Syracuse against unbeaten #8 Villanova, but it was never very close in the second half, as the Orange glided to victory 78-62.
With the Christmas holiday over, conference play starts in full next week, complete with its normal slate of upsets. Until then, happy new year!

I think the 'bs' in the bonus column says it all... That is why I put the "b" after the "s"!!

Shakeups hit the middle and bottom of the tables as BxBarracuda matches his high spot of the season in 5th following his 2nd HoF effort, and themonarch equals him in order to vault from last to 10th. Both tippers also picked Kansas State in an upset win to earn an extra bonus point – but that shouldn’t have been a huge surprise as the Wildcats had beaten them 4 of the previous 5 matchups. dg_dave picked up his 4th spoon of the season, while illiniman14 extends his lead to 3.
The top 5 in the rankings held serve, but the rest of the top 25 was in some major pain this weekend. As previously mentioned, Kansas State took down #6 Oklahoma State 74-71. #7 Duke fell to Notre Dame, who has never lost an ACC conference game (after 1 game), 79-77 – a result only ozzz2002 predicted. #10 Oregon also fell on the road to #20 Colorado 100-91.
#17 Connecticut, following an upset loss to Houston, also fell to SMU on the road 74-65. #18 Memphis got their first AAC loss, getting crushed by Cincinnati in the 2nd half for a 69-53 loss. Finally, #19 North Carolina was stunned by Wake Forest on the road 73-67.
