Back-to-back HoF’s by themonarch vault him to a new personal high of 9th, surpassing Sypher while the latter pulls in his first spoon of the year and goes to his new personal low of 10th. Meanwhile, ozzz2002 continues his own personal tear, picking up 2 solo bonus points (he accounts for 9 of the total 25 bonus points in the comp - and he's already beat his record of 8 bonus points set last year) and now stands at his personal high of 3rd, only 3 back of the lead. Just 3 weeks ago, he stood in 8th and 10 points back from the lead. We also hope to see the return of cubswin2323, who has taken 2 weeks off but at least received a healthy 9 points this week as the road teams showed up in force.
Several upsets hit the top 25 this weekend, but for the most part it was just full of scares and close calls. #5 Michigan State may have won by 12, but that’s because they outscored Minnesota in overtime 16-4 after trailing much of regulation. #6 Wichita State also found themselves victors after overtime with Missouri State 82-79. #10 Florida had to make a tough shot with 2 seconds left to go to overtime with Arkansas, but came away with a 84-82 victory. #21 Missouri also found themselves in a dogfight (…or catfight? *chuckle*) with Auburn, as the Tigers beat the Tigers 70-68.
But of course there were upsets. #9 Iowa State was bitten by a tough Oklahoma team on the road 87-82. #3 Ohio State fell at home to #20 Iowa 84-74. #15 Colorado lost their leading scorer to a torn ACL and was promptly thumped by Washington 71-54. #16 Duke was the surprise of the weekend, going down to Clemson 72-59. Stanford’s victory over #17 Oregon gave dg_dave and themonarch a solo bonus. And finally, #23 Illinois barely showed up at Northwestern, losing 49-43.
For the first time this season, nobody picked the winner of a game – and in fact, it happened twice! Akron’s overtime win over Ohio provided the first such result, while my fellow tippers felt confident in an Illinois win against Northwestern, but as previously noted that was not meant to be. This week also marked the lowest strike rate over the history of the comp - with only 50% of our picks coming in correct.

Sypher, after hitting a new low last time out in 10th, came roaring back with a HoF this week and propels himself back up to 8th. paper_aero finds himself on the short end of the stick this week, with 7. The front four are beginning to separate themselves out from the pack, but that could change very easily, as seen by ozzz2002’s recent run, and he maintains his position in 3rd for this week.
For the second week in a row, Northwestern was on the docket; for the second week in a row, nobody picked them; and for the second week in a row, they won. Let that be a lesson to all of us. The only solo picks ended up being ozzz2002 and Sypher for their picks of Michigan.
A shorter write-up this week as I move to a new system, hopefully next week this will take a little less time.

A strong week by illiniman14 puts him up 6 on the field while he grabs his 3rd HoF in the process. Meanwhile, the Cinderella story of ozzz2002 was saved by his two bonus points, even though he picked up a spoon in the process, matched by BxBarracuda and themonarch. This was the first week that one game wasn’t picked by everyone, with ozzz2002 boldly venturing out on his own several times while BxBarracuda was the one brave soul to choose BYU.
It was a fairly quiet weekend for the polls. The big game of the weekend came in East Lansing, where #21 Michigan put up 50 in the second half and downed their in-state rival #3 Michigan State 80-75. Aside from that, Texas upset #24 Baylor to keep their slide going. #4 Villanova got a scare in overtime, but fought off Marquette 94-85; and San Diego State got a similar result against Utah State 74-69.

The back of the table took all the big news as gtho4 grabs his first HoF of the year with 9 in a week full of upsets and streaks broken. However, he still trails wwe84 despite the latter picking up his 5th spoon. Meanwhile, illiniman14 extends his lead to 8 as he picks up a solo bonus with the top-25 upset of St. Joseph's over #21 Massachusetts.
The game of the week was the first in-conference matchup ever between #2 Syracuse and #17 Duke - and if the Blue Devils had won there would have actually been solo bonus points (who would've thought we'd ever say that?). However, Syracuse took the win at home in overtime 91-89. The result of the day came on the opposite side of the country, and astounded everyone except ozzz2002. Previously-unbeaten #1 Arizona took a trip to California and paid for it, as a jumper with 0.9 seconds left put them down 60-58. Ever since (and including) his 15/15 round, ozzz2002 has 10 bonus points in 6 rounds, without which he would stand in 8th place.
#25 Texas played host to #6 Kansas, but wasn't a gracious host as the Jayhawks never came within 10 points of the lead in the 2nd half. In a matchup of two struggling teams, #24 Ohio State got off the snide by taking down #14 Wisconsin on the road 59-58. In yet another top-25 matchup, #16 Iowa State also ended some recent struggles by downing #23 Oklahoma 81-75.
Elsewhere, Georgetown shocked all but dg_dave when they bested #7 Michigan State at Madison Square Gardens 64-60. Baylor ended their 5-game losing streak by beating #8 Oklahoma State 76-70. Also, #22 Memphis was blasted on the road by Southern Methodist 87-72.

illiniman14 picks up a HoF and sees his lead balloon up to 12 when it was 2 only 3 weeks ago. He is joined by Howie72 as both picked 11/15 this week. With his HoF, Howie72 surpasses paper_aero who gets his second spoon of the year. Meanwhile, ozzz2002 hits his yearly high as he is now tied for second (while getting a bonus point in his 7th straight week), and wwe84 hits a similar mark as he is now tied for his all-time high at 9th.
Our comp saw three upsets in the top 25. In what was supposed to be the game of the day, #17 Iowa jumped on #10 Michigan early and led by double digits for the entire second half to win 85-67. #15 Texas was dealt a similar fate, as a trip to Kansas State ended with a 74-57 loss. The eventual game of the day was an out-of-conference matchup, as #23 Gonzaga led #24 Memphis 54-50 with 3:20 left, and failed to score another point the rest of the game and the Tigers won 60-54.
Several other upsets populated the college basketball landscape. #7 Cincinnati faced Larry Brown's Southern Methodist team in Dallas, and left the victim of a 76-55 rout. As ozzz2002 figured would happen, St. Joseph's held serve at home to beat VCU 69-62. In what was an upset only on FunTrivia, favored Mississippi took down Missouri 91-88, earning illiniman14 and Sypher a solo bonus.
But the news of the day was surely Texas Tech's upset of #19 Oklahoma State, but not for the score (65-61). As the game entered its final seconds, Cowboys star guard Marcus Smart committed a foul blocking a shot, flying into the stands in the process. Once he was helped up, he went farther into the stands, exchanged some words with a fan, and shoved him. Details of the exchange are still in its infancy as of this posting, but will be the big story of college basketball heading into Sunday.

A tremendously high scoring week ends with gtho4 as the sole tipper gaining a near perfect bonus, with 13/15. Five other tippers trailed him by just one. Meanwhile, after getting a bonus point in 7 straight weeks, ozzz2002 was up for 5 solo bonus points this week and missed every one of them, leaving him as the only tipper in single digits with 6. This also took him out of the podium spots as George95 enters the top 3.
#1 Syracuse hosted NC State after beating Pittsburgh on a miracle 3-pointer on Wednesday. They came back this weekend by stealing an inbounds pass with 14 seconds left, and the ensuing layup put them up 56-55 for the win. In #8 Duke and Maryland's last ACC matchup ever, the Terrapins were held scoreless for the last 2:50 and lost 69-67. In what was considered the game of the day prior to play, #3 Florida ended #14 Kentucky's 22-home game winning streak 69-59, outscoring the Wildcats 9-2 in the final 3 minutes.
In a game everyone (somehow) got right, #24 Connecticut upset #20 Memphis at home in overtime 86-81. In the only other top-25 upset, #25 Pittsburgh fell on the road to North Carolina 75-71. Then in Waco, after 45 minutes of even play, Baylor exploded in the second overtime against Kansas State to win 87-73. And for the heck of it, I should mention Illinois held the lead at halftime over #22 Ohio State, but then proceeded to shuster away the game (let's see if anyone watches curling here) to lose 48-39.

Sixty-five minutes of play? Where are the other 20 minutes?

With two weeks left, Howie72 pulls into 2nd place for the first time this season with a HoF, sending N-Bomb back to third for the first time as well. The race for second appears to be between those two, while dg_dave, George95, and paper_aero all have a shot at third. Unfortunately, ozzz2002, even after his Cinderella run, sits 8 points back of the podium as he picks up his second straight spoon this week.
The game of the week lived up to its billing, as #1 Syracuse was upended by #5 Duke after a controversial charge call went the home team's way with 10 seconds to go, setting coach Jim Boeheim into a frenzy, earning him two technical fouls and an ejection. Duke's subsequent free throws put the game out of reach and they won 66-60. The other top-15 matchup was also a fantastic game, as Russ Smith hit a teardrop with 2 second left to put #11 Louisville up 58-57 on #7 Cincinnati, which was the final score.
The only other top-16 matchup saw #16 Wisconsin end on a 7-2 run, beating #15 Iowa on the road 79-74. The only other top-20 matchup saw nowhere near that amount of drama, as after opening the game 10-10, #5 Kansas won the rest of the first half 36-8 over #19 Texas, and won the game 85-54. The big upset of the day was #6 San Diego State showing little offense while losing 58-44 to New Mexico, while #23 UCLA fell on the road to Stanford 83-74, netting Howie72 and dg_dave a solo bonus. The other bonus points came from Alabama taking down Missouri at home 80-73, which pleased ozzz2002 and paper_aero.

The penultimate week has come and gone, and illiniman14 is 6 points clear of the field with a hard-charging Howie72 behind, with his second straight HoF performance, leaving him 8 clear of the third spot. The only question (barring a 2011 NFL comeback) will be who finishes in third, as N-Bomb sits in the bronze position by a single point over dg_dave and 3 over George95. Of course, 5 back is the only tipper to get 15/15 in this comp, ozzz2002, so there may be some magic in store for him as well.
Upsets littered the landscape this weekend, with #4 Syracuse continuing their struggles by going down 75-56 to #12 Virginia, who in the process takes the ACC regular season title. #5 Kansas fared no better, as Marcus Smart kept his head on his shoulders and led Oklahoma State to a strong 72-65 victory - but neither Howie72 nor BxBarracuda were surprised by that. In what might have ruined the comp organizer's weekend (more on that later), #7 Louisville also fell on the road to #21 Memphis 72-66. #9 Creighton fell at Xavier 75-69, and #10 St. Louis lost their second in a row as they fell to VCU 67-56.
Just outside the top 10, #11 Cincinnati lost an all-canine matchup to Connecticut 51-45. #15 Iowa State struggled on the road at Kansas State to the tune of 80-73. #17 Kentucky thankfully went down to South Carolina 72-67. Oklahoma also defeated their nemesis #24 Texas 77-65.
So why didn't the Louisville loss ruin this organizer's weekend? Well, #18 Michigan State, healthy seemingly for the first time since Mateen Cleaves stood on the court, hosted a pesky Illinois team and fell 53-46, in what has been deemed by non-experts as the biggest upset on ESPN2 during that timeslot. NIT, here we come!

The end of the regular season is upon us, and with no late surprises illiniman14 takes home the gold! Behind him stands the only repeat medalist, Howie72, moving up from third last year to take silver this year. And with the bronze, the only tipper to never leave the podium spots all season, is N-Bomb. Congrats to the medalists!
Howie72 set himself up for a possible victory, disagreeing with illiniman14 on four matchups, including Texas Tech over Texas which would earn him a bonus point (which they did), and a perfect bonus would throw the two tippers into a tie, where Howie72 would come out on top due to the tiebreaker. Alas, the dream ended early, as Naz Long made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send #16 Iowa State to overtime with Oklahoma State, and without Marcus Smart on the court the Cyclones came out victorious.
N-Bomb also had to battle to keep on the podium, with dg_dave only 1 back and George95 3 back. However, he stemmed off the tide by pulling off his first HoF performance since Week 7.
As for the week that was in basketball, it was very much a tale of upsets and blowouts around the country. #1 Florida trounced #18 Kentucky 84-65, becoming the first team to go 18-0 in SEC history (2011-12 Kentucky went 16-0 before conference expansion). #2 Wichita State pummeled the rest of the MVC and won their conference tournament, meaning they will enter the NCAA Tournament 34-0, the first undefeated since 1991 UNLV, who lost in the Final Four. #4 Duke almost gave up a big lead but still handled #14 North Carolina 93-81. #11 Louisville also smoked a fellow top-25 opponent, taking down #19 Connecticut 81-48.
#3 Arizona has continued their rough patch, losing to previously-faltering Oregon 64-57 (but then Sypher and themonarch saw that coming). #8 Kansas wasted a 41-point performance by Andrew Wiggins in a 92-86 losing effort at West Virginia. Elsewhere, a thought-long-dead Illinois team completed their second top-25 upset in a week, beating #24 Iowa 66-63 on a last-second 3-pointer.
As for record book updates, both illiniman14 and George95 have gone two complete seasons spoonless, which may grant them spots on the FT HoF come next season if they keep it up. illiniman14 also finished the season in the top spot for the final 13 weeks, earning him a spot at the tail-end of that leaderboard in the FT HoF though it will be active come next season.
In regards to just comp-wide records, ozzz2002 shattered his previous record of 8 bonus points set last year with 17 this year, highlighted by his record 7 straight weeks earning a bonus point. However, alongside those he also picked up 6 spoons, giving him that record as well - although he did get a perfect round in Week 8. On the other side, Howie72 and N-Bomb tied the previous record for most HoFs in a season with 6. illiniman14 also tipped 5 more than gtho4 did last year for 196. A full recap of the records will be posted shortly.
