I'm doing my best gtho4, but I really know nothing about soccer let alone all the leagues .... here goes nothing!

Chris Hughton with 34 appearances.
For the first answer, how about Alan Knight with Pompey who broke Peter Bonetti's(of Chelsea) record.

Am I close??

hiya CC, nope and nope!
league means Football League Divisions 1 to 4 until 1992 now FL Div 1 to 3 plus the Premier League hint:-> he played over league 700 games [ie. excludes cup matches, internationals etc]
FA Cup for a team to win the cup they need to win 6 matches (rounds 3,4,5,6 SF and F) teams from the top 2 divisions do not play until round 3, and no team which plays in round 1 or 2 has ever won the cup (well not since before WW1, but that question will be left for another day!) hint:-> this player played well over 50 FA Cup matches [the FA cup is knockout and there are no seedings so this player was "fortunate" to play in a lot of cup matches]

I have no idea but I'm trying..

Most for one club: David O'Leary of Arsenal

CC it's not O'Leary ... another hint on b: the most number of appearances in the FA Cup is 88 games, Peter Shilton is second on 86 matches

Terry Paine made 809 appearances for Southampton between 1956 and 1977 but I have no idea how many were in the League and how many were in the Cup. He then went on to play for Hereford where he made another 33 appearances.
This was a record for an outfield player until Tony Ford broke it earlier this season.
He, however, has played for several clubs.
Please put us out of our misery with the answers soon. I've spent hours looking for these.

league
770 John Trollope 1960-1980 (all for Swindon Town)
764 Jimmy Dickinson 1946-1965 (all for Portsmouth)
761 Roy Sproson 1950-1972 (all for Port Vale)
Terry Paine made a total of 824 appearances (713 for Southampton and 111 for Hereford United) from 1957 to 1977
FA Cup
88 Ian Callaghan (79 Liverpool 7 Swansea City 2 Crewe Alexandra)
86 Peter Shilton (too many clubs to list and I'd probably make a typo if I tried)
Terry Paine would be up near here too with a total of 809 less 713 league = 96 FA Cup and League Cup and other matches, but I can't split those 96 up, can anybody else?

some more trivia:
the record for consecutive appearances in league matches is held by Harold Bell with 401 for Tranmere Rovers 1946-1955 (he played in a total of 459 games)

p.s. there are a few players who've made more than 200 league appearances for 3 clubs, or is it 300 appearances for 2 clubs; anyway, I'm still putting this one together but I keep losing my sheets.
