World Cricket - 2013: November 21, 2013 to end March, 2014 Inviting people for the 10th edition of World Cricket... Nobody has ever retained their title in the 9 editions this comp has been run.... paper_aero is the defending champion here after a very dominating performance last season. N-Bomb was second last year after winning it the year before. Can paper_aero do what 8 others failed to do before him? Plenty of cricket action over the next few months, starting with the Ashes down under. Other than Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, we will see all other Test teams in play here in our comp over the next 4 months! You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 for ODI series from the list of players I will provide and you score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about. Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and the comp will also involve some unannounced series and some mega bonus rounds in between (where 2 matches start on same/close by dates). 13 people turned up last year, so hoping to see a decent turn-around this year too and to a good, fun competition...

- A Hearty welcome to the 8 people who lined up on the starting blocks for the 10th edition of World Cricket! No new faces this year and even of the 'regulars' who are usually there, LeoDaVinci, illiniman14 and N-Bomb are missing (though N-Bombs did post tips for round 2)
- Australia thrashed the daylights out of England with one of the heaviest Ashes defeats to kick start our season with a bang! Was this the same England side that were so dominant against the very same opponents just 3 months back?
- wwe84 and ozzz2002 are off the blocks in some style in our comp, picking 'near-perfect' teams. wwe84 edges the first HoF by a single point, a real rarity in this comp in terms of margins! gtho4 is not too far behind with a decent showing as well.
- Two of our podium finishers last year, paper_aero and srini701 are apparently still groggy from their last year's celebrations, while the 3rd podium finisher N-Bomb did not even get up for round 1
- Some stats from me to make note of: Spoonless streaks still running include paper_aero, Sypher and N-Bomb (exact number to be confirmed by next round)...with N-Bomb not lodging tips for this round, can his name still be considered??
- There will be plenty of rounds this season with 2 Test matches in them, so we will be picking 10 players each time such rounds happen. Please play close attention each round as to how many players you have to pick, that's all!

- South Africa shared the T20 series 1-1 and managed to lose an ODI series they should have won with ease against Pakistan. They await India next for a 3 ODIs and 2 Test series (we will cover the Tests in our comp here).
- wwe84 extends his lead at the top of the ladder but paper_aero has begun to make his move. He takes this round's HoF award and climbs up a couple of rungs.
- Howie takes the spoon by a narrow margin against BxBarracuda.
- With plenty of rounds with 2 Test matches on this season, even a lead of 300 points may not be a comfortable cushion out here for some time to come

- New Zealand were robbed off a win by rain on the final day at Dunedin and Brendon McCullum's quest for a Test win as a captain continues...this is not to take away from the brilliant performance of Darren Bravo, who scored a double hundred after West Indies were asked to follow-on...another interesting stat: New Zealand have NEVER won a Test match in their history after scoring 600!
- Rain did not save England though, and Australia duly pounded them in the 2nd Test at Adelaide to go 2-0 up. Mitchell Johnson continues to torment them with the ball, Michael Clarke continues to plunder hundreds off them and now their captain can't score a run

- ozzz2002 leaps past wwe84 to the top of the standings here but the round totally belonged to N-Bomb. He picked the round's HoF with a massive score despite not picking the best possible trumps, and he jumps into 4th place now....
- At the other end, srini completed a most miserable round with a second spoon in 3 rounds...one of his "trumps" did not even play the match
while the rest only had an average outing.

If it wasn't for Alistair Cook, I would have picked a near perfect squad (bar the trumps). Safe to say that won't happen again!

- Australia regained the Ashes well before Christmas! They thumped the hapless English by 150 runs in Perth with Mitchell Johnson and David Warner continuing to make this their Ashes
But England probably has a silver lining in the form of Ben Stokes, who has shown he has it in him to be a good all-rounder in the years to come.
- New Zealand won their first Test for 2013 with an innings win over West Indies inside three days. This is the 3rd Test in the last 4 they played that West Indies are losing in less than 3 days! Ross Taylor scored a second successive Test century while Trent Boult picked a 10 wicket haul to speed up the defeat.
- paper_aero picked up a second HoF and continued his climb up the ladder. N-Bomb also moved up with another good round.
- wwe84 is back on top as Ozzz2002 picks up his first spoon and tumbles all the way from the top, down to seventh place.
The next round sees a new series start as India take on South Africa. That Test starts on Wednesday, Dec 18, so make sure you get your tips in before the toss. spoonless streaks running: N-Bomb - 41 and counting: 3 (2013-14)+ 18 (2012-13)+ 17 (2011) +3 (last spoon in round 24 of 2010-11) Sypher - 40 and counting: 4 (2013-14)+ 18 (2012-13)+ 17 (2011) +1 (last spoon in round 26 of 2010-11) paper_aero - 22 and counting: 4 (2013-14) + 18 (2012-13) (spoon in last round of 2011 comp)

Might as well not bother with England as they didn't bother to show up and play !! Quite agree with that...I honestly thought it would be a good, close Ashes with Australia just having the edge because of home conditions! Now a 5-0 is very much on the cards (unless the Australians slip up as is their wont after winning a series )

I generally follow the espncricinfo website, Bx. Pretty good with fixtures, scores, analysis etc. But even they give a "preview" of matches only one day before the match starts, and sometimes that preview might list who's injured and might/might not play.

That is the whole beauty of cricket and our comp here You never know who might or might not play One day a player is a star, next match he is carrying drinks! Sometimes it also depends on conditions (for example, in India you can be sure Pragyan Ojha would play, but he very rarely gets a chance to play outside India...similarly, Sunil Narine is an automatic in ODIs and T20s for West Indies, but rarely gets selected in Tests!)

- India and South Africa played out one of the greatest Test matches in history with a terrific last day chase by the hosts. First up, India had lost their last 8 away Tests, were blanked out in the ODI series before the Test, had their one practice match rained out, were with a totally new batting line up, and were expected to be rolled over by the best fast bowling unit in the world. Instead, led by Virat Kohli, Pujara and their 3 fast bowlers, they dominated the Test for 4 days and when they set the hosts 458 to win, a very famous victory was very much on the cards. But South Africa got their act together on the last day and showed great courage and spirit to show why they are the No. 1 team in the world. With some very resolute batting by Faf Du Plessis and De Villiers, they almost pulled off the highest run chase ever in the history of Test cricket, only to fall short by 7 runs! A fair result in the end, but I suspect South Africa will be the happier team going into the Boxing Day Test

- Ross Taylor scored a 3rd Test century in a row, scored almost 500 runs in a 3-Test series and West Indies collapsed in their second innings for the umpteenth time this year as New Zealand completed a comfortable 2-0 win. Boult and Southee together picked up 38 wickets in the series to cap a good year in the end for New Zealand. They await India in February next.
- srini701 picks up his first HoF for the season and stays put in 7th place! In fact, other than Howie72 and Sypher who switched places, the rest of us stuck to our positions
But paper_aero is fast closing in on wwe84 at the top of the ladder and N-Bomb is not too far behind either.
- Ozzz2002 made it back to back spoons, helped a lot by the fact that neither of his 2 picks from the New Zealand side played the Test! Ozzz's love for New Zealand cricket has just gone up a notch

The next round involves the 2 Boxing Day Tests in South Africa and Australia. Even if you don't pick teams, your previous teams can continue to score for you.... ************************************************* spoonless streaks running: N-Bomb - 42 and counting: 4 (2013-14)+ 18 (2012-13)+ 17 (2011) +3 (last spoon in round 24 of 2010-11) Sypher - 41 and counting: 5 (2013-14)+ 18 (2012-13)+ 17 (2011) +1 (last spoon in round 26 of 2010-11) paper_aero - 23 and counting: 5 (2013-14) + 18 (2012-13) (spoon in last round of 2011 comp)
