Cal Ripken (Baltimore Orioles) got his 3000th hit just a few hours ago 4/15/2000
when he tomahawked a high, inside pitch straight up the middle for a single.

You got it reedman!! Wasn't that exciting? He was the 23rd player to do so and for those who didn't watch the game, they stopped the game and players came out on the field to congradulate Ripken and the audience gave him a standing ovation. It was quite exciting!!

Interestingly enough, although all the sources I've heard through the media note Cal as the 23rd player to reach 3000 hits, Baseball Digest already had 23 reach this milestone before Cal. I wonder where the glitch is.....
This will take a while as I am a slow typist ! Baseball Digest lists the following all-time hit leaders -
1) Pete Rose-4256
2) Ty Cobb -4191
3) Hank Aaron -3771
4) Stan Musial-3630
5) Tris Speaker-3514
6) Carl Yastrzemski-3419
7) Honus Wagner-3418
8) Paul Molitor-3319
9) Eddie Collins-3313
10) Willie Mays-3283
11) Eddie Murray-3255
12) Napoleon Lajoie-3244
13) George Brett-3154
14) Paul Waner-3152
15) Robin Yount-3142
16) Dave Winfield-3110
17) Tony Gwynn-3067
18) Rod Carew-3053
19) Lou Brock-3023
20) Wade Boggs-3010
21) Al Kaline-3007
22) Cap Anson-3000
23) Roberto Clemente-3000
24) Cal Ripken-3000

Reedman, you are correct and the announcers were incorrect yesterday. I checked with CNN Sports Issustrated and here is what they said:

quote:

Ripken reaches another milestone
Cal Ripken already made 2,632 a magical number. On Saturday night, he settled on a more round figure. The Baltimore Orioles' Iron Man became the 24th member of the 3,000-hit club with a line drive single to center field off Minnesota Twins reliever Hector Carrasco in the top of the seventh inning. The accomplishment overshadowed the O's 6-4 victory in front of 18,745 appreciative fans.

Good job reedman ... I've checked a few publications that I have and a couple list Cap Anson with 2,995 while the others list him with 3000. The one that surprised me was Total Baseball which listed him with 2,995.

Great facts, JoJo - I didn't expect to find baseball trivia in Season Tickets - I'll have to visit there more often....
As I understand it CC, Cap Anson was the first in the 3000 club and the records from those days were not as well kept. I love baseball history and the vignettes from the early days - for example, while Cap Anson is a pioneer in baseball, he is also remembered as one of the great impediments in breaking the "color line".
Very racist man as was another innovator,
Judge (and Commissioner) Kennesaw Mountain Landis !

Thank you Reedman! I like baseball trivia also. I have a bunch of files on baseball on my hard drive and add at least one more fact to it daily. One of these days I should do quiz on baseball in Quizzyland or if you should decide to and would like for me to email you some of the files, I would be happy to. I haven't been to game in over two years, I should make myself go this year, too bad I don't have Season Ticket!
