How was Yankees manager Billy Martin able to get the umpire to change George Brett's homer to an out during a 1983 game between the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Royals?

By having the umpire rule that the bat used was illegal because the pine tar used to improve the grip was past the allowed point on the bat.

Great job Leprechaun! Earlier in the game, Martin had noticed that Brett's bat appeared to have pine tar smeared on about half its length. Major League Baseball rules forbid any substance on the bat more than 18 inches from its handle. Martin waited until Brett hit his ninth-inning home run, then objected to the umpire, who measured the pine tar on the bat and called Brett out, turning an apparent Royals' win into a Yankees' triumph.
