OK so I put on half a pound this week making me Nine stone Nine and a half pounds
But today - 22nd August - always holds a special place in my heart, and in the immediate family. Because eleven years ago, I made my enormous life-changing decision, to change my eating habits. Back then I was fourteen stone ... and more than probably more! - and my quality of life was more or less zero. General aches and pains, rarely a week went by when I didn't visit my doctor, then using a manual wheelchair for getting about on long and short journeys. It couldn't have been easy for Dad to be pushing me, or Mum either. I snacked on pastries, biscuits by the handful and chocolate bars. I must have known I was overweight - I was certainly more than a little depressed - but didn't "want" to do anything about it. Until I had a blood-test to see if that brought up anything - a trial in itself since I was terrified of injections. What the test came back with was seriously scary - I was borderline diabetes and if I didn't stop my "unhealthy eating" almost at once, I would be injecting myself every day.
It was a massive shock to me, Mum and Dad, and the immediate family. But, the next morning, I decided it was going to be a brand new start. All the goodies were taken out of the house and stored outside, in the shed, to remove temptation. And slowly but surely, with determination, the pounds started to fall off. And the beauty of it, is that I don't do a diet as such, I just try and cut down on the treats. Before, I was having "treats" six or seven times a week - these days its maybe three times a week. When there's a family celebration, Easter or Christmas, I eat what I want, but then cut down the rest of the week smile Dad was so proud of my weight loss - as is Mum - but all my friends on Funtrivia have helped me with their support too. Many thanks, one and all xxxxxxxx

I never even owned a scale (except for the little one in my kitchen that weighs grams etc) until 1.5 years ago. And there's a reason why. Body weight, in and of itself, isn't really a good indicator of whether you are healthy or not.

Muscle weighs way more than fat does.
Water content in your body, especially as you get older, goes up and fluctuates probably 3x per day. Water is heavy (but you need it - that is, unless you're retaining it lol).

If you exercise and improve your muscle tone, you're going to be disappointed when you get on the scale if weight is the only consideration. It's quite likely you won't see ANY weight loss in this case (but that's a good thing).

Perhaps a better measure of your successes (and I can see that you all are trying very hard and have done very well) would be BMI (you know, how many inches in a pinch lol). And is your heart/cardiovascular fitness okay? Are you free of diabetes? Kidney/bladder functions okay? If so, perhaps you don't need to stress yourselves out about weight from day to day.

I'm only concerned about folks fretting so much because you see, I'm 5'10". I used to weigh 170 (when I was in VERY good shape and "athletic"). Now I weigh less than 140 and none of it is muscle anymore, sigh, but it's actually an "improvement" because 8 months ago I weighed 125.

Please stay healthy everyone!

And please remember that "health" and "weight" are not necessarily the same thing. Feeling good about yourself and being able to do all the things you want to physically are vastly more important : )

Jakeroo, I don't think anyone in this thread is measuring their healthiness by weight alone. Also, BMI is not a good indicator of overall health. It's also not a measure of body fat (which is that "inches in a pinch" you mentioned), but of total weight vs. height.

Oh for heaven's sake kaddarsgirl, you've missed the point again (which was entirely one of encouragement). And nowhere in my message did I explicitly say that BMI was an indicator of HEALTH in general, just that it's a better indicator of fat vs muscle rather than just the number you see when you stand on a scale. And you may well say that no one in this thread is measuring their weight, but that's pretty much the content of many of the postings here. MY point is that the scale doesn't matter in many cases. Sorry that you didn't "get it".

I didn't say that. I said that the people who post here are not only measuring their health by their weight.

Like I said before, BMI does not measure fat (or muscle). It's a ratio of total weight to height, regardless of whether the weight is fat or muscle, it doesn't differentiate between the two. Sorry that you "didn't get it".

K: "Interestingly", that's not the part of the message I hoped people would get. But you're technically correct on the BMI thing. My error.

For the rest of you? Keep up your good fight and don't let yourselves become discouraged by the scale, particularly if you are "working out" in any way (that includes things like simply walking, which many people kinda forget about). Exercise isn't all about lifting weights and running marathons lol.

I am proof of that, Jakeroo. All I did to lose the weight I did was watch my calorie intake and walk...that is it!

Very cool Dave!

Swimming is good too, particularly for older folks like me with "joint" issues, as there are no "jarring" motions. Sure, I did aerobics 40 years ago, but these days there are some days it's an "exercise" just to get out of bed in the morning LOL.

lol dave, are you a wannabe Briton? It's bad enough to convert between metric and what I grew up with, but now you're throwing stones at the equation??

(giggles, just kidding, sounds like you're doing quite well overall!)

I haven't been checking in regularly... I stopped dieting for almost a year and have only been on it again for the last month. So far I've lost 14 lbs and for the first time in seven years I'm below 180 lbs, weighing in this morning at 176. That's 24 lbs overall!

I'm so proud of myself, and soon I will need to go buy new (smaller) trousers.
