Team Tennis (Davis Cup/Fed Cup 2014)Planning to organize a brand new tipping competition in team tennis. The comp will involve tipping countries as they battle for the Davis Cup (men) and Fed Cup (women). We will only tip the countries we think will win each tie from the list I will provide before each round. Only issue is: The comp will only have 7 rounds, but will run almost the entire year! The tentative schedule of the rounds would be: 1. Davis Cup First round: 31 Jan - 2 Feb 2014 2. Fed Cup First round : 8-9 February 2014 3. Davis Cup WG quarterfinals, Group 1 2nd round: 4 April - 6 April 4. Fed Cup semis, Group 1 and 2 playoffs: 19-20 April 5. Davis Cup semifinals, world Groups and other playoffs: 12 Sept - 14 Sept 6. Fed Cup final: 1-2 Nov 7. Davis Cup finals: 21 Nov-23 Nov 2014 We shall have the competition only if there are a minimum of 10 people ready to play (and last) it Please let me know your interest by signing up here. Also any suggestions/ideas you may have in what we can do. The first 2 threads will go up once I know we have a comp!

Thanks..that's half my expected field at least With the "usual suspects" (gtho4, ozzz, Sypher, Howie and me) lurking around as well, we can have a comp then! Hoping to have lottssss more people since this is not a "specialized" comp like cricket.

| A hearty Welcome to 13 of us to the latest tipping competition on the FunTrivia Forums. For lack of a better name, we are calling it "Team Tennis". The competition will cover both the Davis Cup (Men) and Fed Cup (Women) and will span the entire year for just 7 rounds. I will try and make an even spread of points for all the rounds (16 for for first 5 rounds and 8 each for last 2 rounds).
The Davis Cup is a great leveller! Rankings and seedings often do not matter, and the home crowds often make it very hostile for the visiting players. But despite that, some players play above themselves and pull off great wins and this year's first round was no exception! James Ward pulled off a stunner to beat a much higher ranked Sam Querrey as Great Britain beat the USA for the first time since 1935(!) to progress to its first World Group quarterfinal in 28 years!
Fabio Fognini of Italy put the crowd noise behind him as he won all 3 of his rubbers to hand Argentina it's first home defeat in a first round tie in 13 years! This is just Italy's second quarterfinal since 1998!
Japan won its first ever World Group tie, while defending champions Czech Republic won their 10th consecutive Davis Cup tie, to set up a quarterfinal meeting. France blanked out Australia, while Germany overcame a more fancied Spain to set up another quarterfinal meeting. Kazakshtan reached it's second successive quarterfinal where it will meet Switzerland which beat a Djokovic-less Serbia.
Only 4 road teams won over the opening weekend and 3 of them were in the World Group! Some points for us to ponder over for the next rounds
N-Bomb and Howie72 are off to a flying start in our comp, picking 11 of the 15 matches (China-New Zealand match was moved ahead, so it has been cancelled in our round). 4 sole pick bonus points were awarded this round and Dizart and Sypher get 2 of them for backing their country to upset the USA
LeoDaVinci takes home the first spoon in the new comp with 4/15 picks, but he will get plenty of chances to redeem himself over the year...after all, the Fed Cup is another ball game altogether and that is our next round
The Fed Cup action is over the coming weekend (8-9 Feb), so make sure you get your tips in before the matches start!

| The second round of action in our Team Tennis comp featured the Fed Cup World Group and World Group 1 matches (8 matches for 16 points). Unlike Davis Cup, home advantage was not too visible in the Fed Cup as teams with the higher ranked players won through. Italy set up a semifinal clash with Czech Republic, while Australia will play Germany in the other semifinal in April. All the losing countries go into play-offs.
N-Bomb had another fabulous round, picking every match except the USA-Italy tie. He lands a perfect pick bonus and opens up a nice lead at the top!
Dizart gets the sole bonus point for tipping Italy to win and he is in a bunch of 3 players in the second spot, with BxBarracuda just a further point behind.
Sypher, ozzz2002 and wwe84 get the round's spoons for getting only 3 of their 8 matches right.
The next round of the competition is in April with the Davis Cup (4-6 April) followed by Fed Cup (19-20 April). The threads will be posted well in advance for you to come in and lodge your tips, so take a break till then

| A fascinating weekend of tennis, with at least 3 home teams in the World Group clawing back from 1-2 down on the final day to clinch their ties! Defending Champions Czech Republic breezed through their match against Japan, but France was down 0-2 against Germany before staging a great recovery, while Italy and Switzerland both won their final day singles to stage come from behind wins. So the semifinal line up for the Davis Cup will be Czech Republic against France and Italy against Switzerland.
In group I ties also there was plenty of drama, with a lot of road teams winning. Favourites Croatia, Israel, Ukraine all won on the road in Europe, Uzbekistan and India both won on the road in Asia, while Brazil won on the road in Americas.
We had a good round as a group, with everyone of us picking 3 matches (Switzerland, Denmark and Mexico), but none of us saw Pakistan winning against Philippines ... We picked 138 of the 208 matches for a very decent 67% success rate
No bonus points this round, but srini701 takes the HoF for the round and moves into sole second place behind N-Bomb, while wwe84 takes home a second spoon.
The next round of the competition will be the Fed Cup (women) semifinals and the world group playoffs, on 19 and 20 April. The thread has been posted and I will update it once the team lists are announced, so make sure you lodge your tips before the matches start.

| Czech Republic and Germany have moved into the finals of this year's Fed Cup with resounding wins. Czech Republic at home over Italy, and Germany on the road against Australia. The finals will be played in Czech Republic on Nov 1-2 and should be a closely fought affair! 6 of us have Czech Republic as our advance pick for the winner and will earn 3 or 1 point in the penultimate round for this pick. No advance picks for Germany!
Dizart joins N-Bomb and srini701 on the HoF list this round, but he also has a sole point bonus for tipping France to beat USA on the road. So he is rightly the hero of the round
But I should also apologize over the error in Dizart's score since round 2 (he should have been 19 after round 2 and 31 after round 3). Somehow I seemed to have given him 2 extra points That has been corrected and these are the correct scores now.
The Fed Cup does not seem to interest Sypher much. After good showing in both Davis Cup rounds, he faltered in both the Fed Cups, including a spoon this time. He joins gtho4, paper and wwe84 on the spoon list for the round.
We take a long break now and will return for the next round of the competition with the Davis Cup semifinals and World Group playoffs during the September 12-14 weekend. Please remember to come back then when the threads will be posted.

| We had another weekend of fascinating tennis around the world with some predictable and some unexpected results.
France stamped their authority over the defending Champions Czech Republic in an emphatic manner to reach their first final since 2010. Their 9th and last win was in 2001. Trying to stop them in the final will be Switzerland, which reached their first final since 1992! France will be at home, but here's a little trivia: Switzerland has always lost to France at home and beaten them away
Elsewhere in the World Group playoff matches, Brazil shocked a Nadal and Ferrer-less Spain and condemned them to their fist zonal drop since 1996! Second ranked Serbia managed to avoid that embarrassment against India as Filip Krajinovic saved the Djokovic-Troicki-Tipsarevic-less Serbs with a final rubber win. Marin Cilic stepped in for the final rubber and helped Croatia beat the Netherlands. Australia, USA and Argentina all won as well to retain their spots in the World Group for 2015.
5 of us had a great round here for the HoF winner spot, including Sypher, who had a third consecutive good Davis Cup round (to go with his poor Fed Cup record ), but we should probably give the honor for this round to illiniman14. He was the only one of us to pick Brazil's upset of Spain! srini701 picked up a spoon and dropped a few spots down the ladder while b] N-Bomb[/b] continues to hold a slim lead at the top.
The next round will be the Fed Cup finals on Nov 1-2, so make sure you come back and post your tips for that round

| Led by Petra Kvitova and backed by a raucous 13,000 strong crowd, the Czech Republic won their 3rd Fed Cup in the last four years, beating Germany quite comprehensively in the first three singles. Germany had the consolation of winning the dead doubles rubber.
srini701 picked the lot this round, while wwe84 and gtho4 managed to bag ducks! 6 of us (BxBarracuda, paper_aero, srini701, N-Bomb, Howie72 and George95) also got the full 3 points for backing the Czechs to win the cup back in round 2!
Thanks to those advance points, N-Bomb and Howie retain their positions at the top, while Dizart falls to a new low with just one round remaining!
The next round will be the *final* round of the comp and will be the Davis Cup finals from November 21-23, so make sure you come back and post your tips before the tie starts

| The great Roger Federer added another feather to his cap and plugged one of the few remaining holes in his illustrious career, as he led Switzerland to their very first Davis Cup title. The historic title makes the Swiss only the 14th nation to win the Davis Cup trophy in the competition’s 115-year history!
On Friday Stan Wawrinka scored the first point for the Swiss with a four-set win against Tsonga, but Gael Monfils made it 1-1 for France with a straight-sets defeat of Federer. Federer and Wawrinka then teamed up on Saturday to beat Gasquet and Julien Benneteau to put the visitors 2-1 up ahead of the last day, when Federer thrashed Richard Gasquet to make it 3-1. The last singles was not played.
N-Bomb capped a historic first for himself here, leading the very first team tennis comp in FT from the word 'go', and deservedly won it handily. Congratulations and very well done, sir
srini701 had one bad round when he picked up a spoon, but was otherwise consistent and finished with a silver medal thanks to a slight slip up at the final hurdle by Howie72.
illiniman14 and George95 stayed inseparable through the year and were in the hunt all along but finished just outside the podium. Dizart had a yo-yo comp there, as did Sypher. BxBarracuda finds himself a lone ranger as he finishes the ONLY one to have a blank in all columns after the score! Impressive wwe84 had a miserable last 2 rounds, taking home two golden ducks and finishing with 5 spoons in the 7-round comp
I know most of us are reluctant to give feedback here, but since this is the very first team tennis competition and it stretched all the year, I'd like to know if you all think it is worth continuing this into another year OR leave it as a one-off competition. 2015 begins with Fed Cup in February followed by Davis Cup in March.
Hoping for feedback and opinion on the comp and suggestions if any....
