Super RugbyThis year's Super XV rugby comp starts next week and will go on till early July. The rules are simple: points
default
draws
upsets
perfect picks
draw bonus
dead-heats
deadline | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours; but if the wooden
spoon score is more, it's the spoon score.
for those brave souls amongst us, you can pick a draw (good luck).
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point (or one of two tipsters).
of 7/7 scores a bonus point; ditto for 6/6 when there's a bye.
no-one picks a draw, bonus point for the minority who picked the upset
win (same as FLC comp).
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if
they're identical, bonus pts will be used.
is always Thursday midnight FT time, with a period of grace through to
kick-off in the first game which is, sometimes, just 35 minutes later. If
you lodge your picks late you score zero for any game that's started. |
This is the 13th edition of the Super XV tipping comp. Last season's competition was won by Sypher, with Howie and Ozzz2002 making up the podium. Howie72 won the competition in 2012 while N-Bomb was the winner in 2011. Can Howie72 make it a hat-trick of podium finishes? Can Sypher retain his title? Or will you upstage them both? All trivia tipping comp junkies, and anyone else who follows the game they play in heaven (according to gtho4), please sign in!

Welcome to Super XV Rugby 2014! 11 of us lined up for another run in this comp, with LeoDaVinci and DavJack missing from last season's line-up.
It was week 2 of the actual season on field, and the Natal Sharks have started on a right note, winning both their matches to date (round 1 involved only the South African teams). Defending Champions Waikato Chiefs have started on a winning note too (a result, which surprisingly, not one of us picked  ). In other matches, the Gauteng Lions and Queensland Reds pulled off shock wins, while the NSW Waratahs are off to a quiet winning start.
It was a colorful start in our comp here with all 11 of us picking either a HoF or a spoon! Dismal week as statistics go, with only 28 right picks (for a winning percentage of just 36.3%), but that allowed 3 of us to pick sole pick bonus points.

Home teams had another great week in the Super XV comp with 5 of the 6 home teams winning this round. Over 80% of the matches this year have been won by the home teams....hmmm....something to consider for the coming weeks 
illiniman14 picked up the cue from BxBarracuda and picked all the matches this round to leap up the table. wwe84 makes it 2 straight spoons for himself.
Ozzz2002 (of all the people ) went default this round and Davjack also went missing after lodging tips last round

A slightly predictable round with 3 of the 7 matches picked by everybody. The Sharks and Chiefs continue to win with ease, while none of us got the "upset" win of Force over the Highlanders, which meant no perfect round for anybody there.
srini701 and George95 picked the rest of the matches for the round's HoFs while 5 people took home the spoon this round.

All the 7 home teams maintained a "perfect record" this week as this year's Super XV starts to become a little more "predictable" .... Defending Champions Chiefs and the Sharks both lost for the first time this season (both on the road), meaning all the teams have already tasted defeat at least once, and in just 6 weeks of the season!
George95 made it back-to-back HoFs in our comp here and moves past illiniman14, who went default this round. At the other end, gtho4, ozzz2002 and Sypher made it back-to-back spoons.

Another of those funny rounds where everybody scrambled either to a podium place or a spoon! None of us picked the "upset" losses of Crusaders and Brumbies, and we had an even spread on the Bulls-Chiefs match which ended in a tie!
That left us the remaining 2 matches to decide our placings here and so we have BxBarracuda dropping off the pole for the first time this season.
gtho4, ozzz and Sypher have made it a hat-trick of spoons. Let's see if there's some new comp going on between them now

The Waikato Chiefs were involved in a second consecutive away tie this season, the Reds lost at home to Force, 2 results none of us got here. We all picked the Highlanders to win at home, while the rest were a mixed bag of results, meaning yet another average round in our comp here
gtho4 bounced back in style, from 3 spoons to a HoF ... and he moves up a couple of spots ...Sypher and ozzz2002 also broke their spoon run. Picking up his first spoon for the season instead is srini701 (teaches him not to comment on a good run while it is on ).
paper_aero is the only one without a spoon now this season (let's see if I manage to jinx him now )

We had a full house this week as "now on, now off" Davjack makes an appearance and other than srini at the top and ozzz2002 in the cellar, everybody managed to land a HoF or spoon for himself!
The Sharks continue to lead the table, the Chiefs ground out a hard fought win and the Brumbies beat a struggling Reds. These 3 occupy the top 3 slots on the ladder, but the Crusaders are still in the hunt for a playoff spot with an away win, while the Force shocked the Waratahs (a result that only Howie tipped here) to also stay in the running.
We seem to be traveling in groups. If it was gtho, ozz and Sypher in one group for a few rounds, N-Bomb, illini and George95 all picked up their second spoon, after their first was also together in the opening round!

Five of the six home teams (including the Stormers) won this round, with the defending champions Chiefs being the lone exception!
Five of us won HoFs this, including gtho4, who now has made it a hat-trick of HoFs. He has now been in either the HoF or the spoon list for 7 of the 9 rounds so far! Three of us won spoons this round, including wwe84, who picked up his 5th spoon for the season. He also has been in either the HoF or spoon list for 7 of the 9 rounds so far this season!
Change at the top of our ladder, as two of the usual medal suspects, paper_aero and Howie scramble up....srini falls off the perch after being 1-2 for the first 8 rounds and BxBarracuda is back at the top.

Five of the six home teams again won this round and guess which was the only exception? Last week if it was defending champions Waikato Chiefs, this week it was the conference leaders Natal Sharks! The Otago Highlanders surprised the Sharks, even as the Chiefs lost their second consecutive game.
The Wellington Hurricanes have now won 4 in a row, while the Brumbies and the Highlanders have won 3 in a row. The Bulls are winless for 5 weeks now
gtho4 won his 4th consecutive HoF here, while BxBarracuda took home the spoon by picking just 1 right. Sypher managed a bonus point for picking the Highlanders to win against the Sharks! Davjack continues to play hide and seek with the comp, and N-Bomb decided to join him this round
Spoonless streak: paper_aero's last spoon was week 1 of 2013 season. Means he's now gone 17 + 10 weeks of 2014 = 27 rounds without a spoon....Hope I have not jinxed him by saying it now

For the third consecutive week, only 1 road team won in the Super XV comp! 54 of the 72 matches so far (a whopping 75%) have been won by home teams this season, which means no team is able to play outside their home turf (kinda like the Indian cricket team )
3 of us picked the lot this round (N-Bomb lodged tips a little late this round, but since the first match was a gimme, I allowed him the pick) for perfect pick bonus points.
7 of us got spoons for getting 5/7 (that score was enough for HoF 3 weeks back ), including gtho4, which breaks his run of 4 HoFs in a row..."good news" for him is that he is still in one of the 2 weekly columns this season (he's only missed weeks 2 and 3 so far!)

The road teams were a little better this round, with 3 of them winning. The Sharks lost to Brumbies on road, but stay on top of the ladder, while the Crusaders crushed the Reds on road to notch their fifth consecutive win. Both the Lions and the Reds have now lost 5 in a row.
illiniman14 picked the lot here for an extra bonus point, but stays where he is...
A rare week for us here this season....Davjack lodged tips for 2 consecutive rounds, gtho4 failed to make it to either HoF or spoon list and as a group we notched one of the highest success rate in picks ever!

We went from the sublime to the ridiculous in one week...from a high of 82% success rate to 36%, for another entry into the record books as a group! There were 6 bonus points dished out this week to 5 different people, and that indicates how diverse our tips were!
BxBarracuda picked 2 of the 6 bonus points and also picked a HoF for good measure, to get back to the top of the ladder. But rather than asking him to explain why he picked the Sharks to win against the Crusaders on road, think we have to ask N-Bomb to write in 20 words (or less) why he picked the Cheetahs to win against the Brumbies!
There is to be no record run, unfortunately, as paper_aero picks up a spoon, bringing to an end a spoonless streak of 29 rounds (see week 10 results above)...sorry, paper, for jinxing you

The Cheetahs are decent this year, especially at home! (I think).
Personally the Sharks result was the most surprising result, very rare for a South African team to win in NZ, especially against the Crusaders.

The Chiefs hopes of winning their third successive Super Rugby title suffered a blow when they were hammered 45-8 by the Wellington Hurricanes. The Chiefs started the round in third place and on top of the New Zealand Super Rugby conference but have dropped out of the top six and are now second last in the Conference.
Elsewhere, the Northern Transvaal Bulls kept their play off hopes alive when they beat the Brumbies 44-23 with a bonus point. The victory was the Bulls third in a row and their sixth from 13 matches this season.
The Waratahs moved to the top of the Australian Super Rugby conference when they beat the Rebels 19-41 with a bonus point while the Western Force kept their hopes of reaching the play offs alive when they beat the Lions 29-19 with a bonus point.The victory is the Force's 8th from 12 matches which is a record for the club. The victory is also the Force's sixth straight win over the Lions.
George95 picked the card this week and the bonus point he earned for that helps him take the lead at the top, the fifth person this season to reach the top!
BxBarracuda continues to be in either the HoF or spoon columns (long overtaking gtho4!) as he shares the spoon this week with Sypher!

Another strange round where all 12 of us lodged tips(!) 2 matches were picked by all and 2 by none!
BxBarracuda is in the mix yet again, for the right reason this round, to take his lead back at the top.
9 of us took home spoons of various sizes and shapes this round as cutlery was freely available in the market
Sypher and wwe84 chose to be the odd ones out this week, and all this meant most of us stayed put in our standings on the ladder.
There's a 3 week break for internationals and we resume the home stretch of 3 rounds from June 27 .....wiiddddeeeee open comp even at this point!!!
