This year's Madness comp will be at the same site as last year. A bracket for 2014 has been setup once again at cbssports.com .. for those of us who played last year, you're half-way there, as invite emails have been sent by csbssports.com to all of last year's participants (using last year's email addresses); the email displays your reg'd ID. The scoring system remains unchanged. There are 63 games in this comp; we pick all of them in one go on the cbssports.com website:
1st Round (32 games) : 1 pt 2nd Round (16 games) : 2 pts 3rd Round ( 8 games) : 3 pts (regional semis ) Sweet Sixteen 4th Round ( 4 games) : 4 pts (regional finals) Elite Eight 5th Round ( 2 games) : 6 pts (national semis ) Final Four 6th Round ( 1 game ) : 9 pts (national final) Seedings: additional pts added for each correct pick, being the team's seed. |
Location: http://www.cbssports.com/login/ftmm.mayhem Group password: ft-comp if that doesn't work, try this link: http://ftmm2004.mayhem.cbssports.com/e If you've sucessfully logged in, you will see this in the top LH corner of the screen: March Madness at FT 2014 Tipping Comp- if you'd like to join the Madness tipping comp but do not have a cbssports ID, there's a link on that page to register. You must have a cbs ID to play in this comp! Please note - you may, but don't have to, use your real name to register (surname, first name); but please pick something for those two fields that looks like your FT username (so that we know who you are).
- this also applies to those who played last year, but can't remember their ID and/or have changed their email address and thus can't retrieve their password (which they've forgotten) .. you will need to re-register.
- please check your reg'd email address in your account settings/profile after you login.
This year's tipping comp is the 13th edition of March Madness! No one has retained their title in this comp, and no one has won it twice (but some have been on the podium twice). The defending title-holder is Sarah6065.. silver and bronze went to BxBarracuda and LeoDaVinci. The winner of the 2008 comp, ralzzz, holds the record for the biggest winning margin (see summary tables of last 12 comps in the post below this one) .. and doomed won bronze that year the hard way; he failed to pick any of the Final Four! Howie72 holds the record for the most correct picks with 51/63, achieved in the 2007 comp.

This year's Madness starts on Thu 20-Mar-2014 and the final is on Mon 7-Apr-2014. The bracket will open for tipping when the field is inserted by cbssports.com, which should happen on Sun 16-Mar-2014. However, the last four teams to qualify will not be known until Monday and Tuesday (they will enter the comp as the four #16 seeds) .. btw a #16 seed has never won a game against their #1 seed opponents since the NCAA started the current Madness format in 1985. Last Four play-in: Tue/Wed 18/19 March now aka First Four First Round: Thu-Fri March 20-21 Second Round: Sat-Sun March 22-23 Third Round: Thu-Fri March 27-28 Fourth Round: Sat-Sun March 29-30 Final Four: Saturday 5th April Championship: Monday 7th April Final Four play-offs at Cowboys Stadium, Arlington TX Deadline: cbssports/com will close the bracket of 63 picks at noon EDT on Thursday 20th March. Good luck remembering your password (if you receive the email) or your ID (if you're reg'd but have changed your email address) .. and good luck registering if you're new! To confirm you're in and that everything's hunky dory, please post in the Group Message Board (it's in the Brackets drop-down menu). This year's Madness should be a piece of cake .. illiniman14 has once again given us a work-out through 18 rounds in the NCAA Basketball comp .. at least the names of the teams and/or who they are won't be as unfamilar as they have been in prior years. This year's results threads will be posted by illiniman14. Rankings: http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1Good luck to all of us; and may the best man or best woman win!

I've logged into the board and posted. Side note: the stadium's name has changed to AT&T Stadium.

Last year we had 15 runners .. and this year 14 of us are back for another dose. The no shows was szabs. Sypher subscribed for this year's comp but missed the deadline.
This is the 13th edition of the Madness bracket comp. The first 12 were run from 2002 to 2013 and produced 12 different winners. At the end of Day One in this year's comp we have the defending titleholder, Sarah606, in the bototm half of the standings.
themonarch, who has never won this, is our leader after Day One. The next four spots are all occupied by previous winners .. we may yet see someone win this for a second.
ozzz2002 was hurt the most on day 1, losing 2 of his Final Four picks - and one on the very first game of the day! Everyone else has all 4 Final Four picks alive heading into Day 2.
A record-breaking day saw 4 games go to overtime on the same day of the tournament. Of those, only one - 12 North Dakota State over 5 Oklahoma - produced an upset. However, 4 San Diego State, 5 St. Louis, and 7 Connecticut all got more than they bargained for with their wins in extra time.
There were 3 other upsets on the day, one of which kicked off the tournament. 11 Dayton won Ohio bragging rights by edging 6 Ohio State 60-59 on a jumper with 6 seconds left in the game. 9 Pittsburgh also scored a mild upset over 8 Colorado who had been missing star player Spencer Dinwiddie since mid-season.
Carrying on the tradition, 12 Harvard took down 5 Cincinnati despite being out-rebounded, out-blocked, and giving up more turnovers. There were only 3 lead changes as Harvard never gave up the lead once up 9-6 with over 13 minutes left in the first half.
And with 47 games left to go, who knows what other madness might ensue? |

The second day provided some very significant movement, including a brand new podium group who all picked 13/16. illiniman14 goes from 4th to 1st, kevinatilusa goes from 6th to 2nd, and srini701 catapults from 10th to 3rd.
On the other end, the former podium members had mixed results. themonarch hit on 10 games, all of them favorites, and fell down to 7th. George95 had 9 of the same picks as themonarch, but ended with 11 correct as he did pick up one upset and stabilized in 5th. N-Bomb was the most stable, getting 12/16 and only dropping from 3rd to 4th.
The upset of the day was obviously 14 Mercer over 3 Duke, a result that nobody could have predicted... except srini701 of course. While LeoDaVinci picked the Blue Devils to lose in the championship game, srini701 knew their end would come much sooner and rode that game to his vault up the leaderboard.
There was one common thread between the three new podium names - they all picked 12 Stephen F. Austin to upset 5 VCU. The fourth tipper to pick the game correctly was BxBarracuda, who sits at the opposite extreme of the table.
The other two upsets on the day were 11 Tennessee over 6 Massachusetts - which illiniman14 took to go into first - and 10 Stanford over 7 New Mexico - which kevinatilusa took to ride into 2nd.
In what wasn't an upset only because of seeding, heavily-picked 9 Oklahoma State lost to 8 Gonzaga, and in the process BxBarracuda lost a quarter of his Final Four picks.
Two top seeds struggled with weaker opponents as well. 16 Weber State hung around just long enough to make things uncomfortable for 1 Arizona, but were never really in a position to win the game towards the end. 2 Kansas, on the other hand, had to fight off 15 Eastern Kentucky, as with only 3:30 left it was only a 3-point game, though they ended up winning by 11.
And now begins the third round, to see who gets a ticket to the Sweet 16! |

And Wichita State moved on...shocking! First team in NCAA history to go 35-0!

I should have forgotten to put my sheet in, ugh this year. Try losing your championship pick before the Sweet 16! LDV and I both have.

Halfway through the round of 32 (2nd round? 3rd round? Who knows these days), the podium remains the same from yesterday, although srini701 and kevinatilusa switched spots. illiniman14 remains out front despite the fact he didn't outscore anyone in the top 11.
Riding his incredible performance from the first day (which featured the same teams as today), themonarch came out strong, hitting 7/8 picks - only missing the game nobody predicted - and vaults back into 4th place. He was the only tipper to move more than 1 spot from what they were yesterday.
After 3 days, we have our first tipper eliminated from championship contention, the first time it's happened this early since 2011, and it was the same person: ozzz2002. With Texas losing, he is now done to only 1 remaining Final Four pick. If he nails all of his picks left, he will end up with 177 points, still lower than illiniman14's current 178.
Still in mathematical contention is LeoDaVinci, who lost two more members of his Final Four today, including his champion Syracuse. dg_dave is feeling a similar pain, losing the Orange as his champion, although he has his 3 other Final Four picks still alive.
As we get a somewhat clearer picture of the leaderboard with only 23 games left, there is still no way to tell if the streak of 12 no repeat winners will continue to 13. illiniman14 won in 2010, but the next 3 tippers - srini701, kevinatilusa, and themonarch - have never won. They are followed by 3 tippers who have previously won.
Two upsets came through today over former conference opponents. Most notable was 11 Dayton over 3 Syracuse, putting an end to the team that started 25-0 and was ranked #1 most of the season until they finished the year 3-6. Also, 7 Connecticut came off an overtime win strong with a resounding 77-65 win over 2 Villanova.
Two upset bids also fell short. 7 Oregon held a 12-point halftime lead, but it vaporized to 1 only 5 minutes into the 2nd half. 2 Wisconsin ended up winning impressively 85-77. 12 Harvard rode a 16-2 run to tie 4 Michigan State midway through the 2nd half, but the Spartans responded with a 16-8 run of their own, and won 80-73.
And onward we go, with only 8 games left until the Sweet 16! |

Two full rounds are complete, and illiniman14 still holds a tenuous lead on the field, while there was plenty of movement behind him. themonarch takes back a podium spot and sits only 2 out of the lead he once held after the first day. George95, a member of that first podium, joins him although now in 3rd. N-Bomb lies only 1 point back.
The top 4, separated by only 8 points, have 3 different champion picks - only George95 and N-Bomb have the same pick with 1 Florida, but with different runners-up. This is not to count out kevinatilusa, who is 6 points back of that group but with a completely unique championship game compared to those 4.
If max points remaining is any indication, Howie72 is up for a big run after spending the first four days only bouncing around from 5th to 7th. He has the 4th-highest max possible behind the podium group, mostly due to being the only tipper to pick 4 Michigan State for the champion.
We lost another two top seeds today, and gtho4 is feeling it the most. His champion pick, previously-undefeated 1 Wichita State, played an outstanding game with 8 Kentucky down to the wire, losing 78-76 in a match where both teams brought their A games.
The day naturally started with an upset, as 2 Kansas, still missing star player Joel Embiid due to injury, was befuddled by the 10 Stanford zone defense. Kansas actually led at halftime 24-22, but from 30-28 on only managed to tie the game once, and missed a potential game-tying shot with 5 seconds left, giving the Cardinal a 60-57 victory.
3 Iowa State gave us the only other good game on the day, taking down 6 North Carolina 85-83 despite losing Georges Niang for the rest of the season to a broken foot in the first round. A late 8-point run by the Cyclones tied the game with 2 minutes left, and with 2 seconds left and the game tied at 83, they hit a layup to ice the game.
The rest of the schedule produced only blowouts, as the next-closest result was a 17-point victory for 4 UCLA. The big shocker was 6 Baylor destroying 3 Creighton 85-55 and holding Doug McDermott to only 15 points on the day.
The Sweet 16 is set, and if there's a delay in the results posting after the Friday games, it's because I will be watching the ol' alma mater Louisville take on hated Kentucky in person. |

By my calculations, there are only 7 people still in the running for the title this year, and some of them are on the brink of being eliminated. The full gory details (assuming I didn't screw up my spreadsheet, which may be a big assumption) Everybody except the top 7 have so many picks matching illiniman14 that they're guaranteed to finish below him no matter what happens. Each of the top 7 has a (possibly very small) chance of winning it all.
There's 15 games left in the tournament. One of them (Stanford vs. Dayton) is completely irrelevant, since nobody picked either of them to go any further. The remaining 14 games give rise to 16,384 scenarios, including 924 that finish in a tie. Splitting those equally among all the people involved in the tie (in actuality there's a tiebreaker), I have
-6557.33 scenarios (40.02%) where themonarch wins -5974.83 scenarios (36.47%) where George95 wins -2390 scenarios (14.59%) where illiniman14 wins -906.5 scenarios (5.53%) where Howie72 wins -482 scenarios (2.94%) where kevinatilusa wins -69.33 scenarios (0.42%) where N-Bomb wins -4 scenarios (0.03%) where srini701 wins
In the Sweet 16 games
kevinatilusa needs Michigan to win N-Bomb needs both Florida and Arizona to win srini701 needs Florida, Virginia, Connecticut, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Michigan all to win (at which point he'll be up to a whopping 1.56%)
Everyone else can afford to have any single game go against them, though they still might get eliminated by a combination of games

Yes, I think we as Americans are pretty fanatical about stats...I am to an extent myself.
