A switch up front puts themonarch back into his original position, while illiniman14 trails by 3 points. The battle for third is between George95 and N-Bomb for the moment, separated by a single point. Past them lurks 5 tippers, the closest of whom is srini701 8 points back, but those 5 are all within 3 points of each other.
Absolutely nobody had a live pick going into 11 Dayton-10 Stanford, and only 3 tippers picked the remaining 3 games correctly - themonarch, gtho4, and dg_dave. Everyone else missed the 2 Wisconsin victory (most having picked 3 Creighton) except for Howie72, who got the Badgers had 1 Arizona losing last round.
George95 retained 3rd place but took a hit to his max points possible as he was the only tipper to lose a Final Four pick today in Baylor. Going by those rankings, the top 3 are still out front with Howie72 close behind despite sitting back in 6th.
The game of the day was 1 Arizona-4 San Diego State, basically by default. Arizona trailed 32-24 in the first half, but the game never broke away from them. With just under 6 minutes left, they finally regained the lead and never looked back, winning those final 6 minutes 20-14 for a final score of 70-64.
11 Dayton kept the Cinderella run going with a victory over 10 Stanford. The Flyers never trailed by more than 1 (that being in the first half), and never led by less than 4 in the second half, cruising to a 82-72 victory.
4 UCLA gave 1 Florida a physical challenge, but couldn't keep up the fight until the end. The Gators used a 9-1 run in the first half to get some breathing room, but only led by 6 at the half. Then, in a 1-point game midway through the 2nd half, Florida put the game away with a 10-0 run lasting 4:30, effectively ending the game. They won 79-68.
There really aren't any words to make the 2 Wisconsin-6 Baylor game seem exciting. Wisconsin dominated 69-52, end of story.
Tomorrow's games will have the most impact on potential Final Four picks, with East picks well split between the top 3 remaining teams. Also, the Battle of the Bluegrass hits the Hoosier state and yours truly will be there to witness it. Let's see who has what it takes to be Elite! |

It was a rough day for everybody but kevinatilusa, as everyone but him lost at least 1 Final Four pick, meaning there are no perfect Final Fours left (kevin had previously lost Creighton). The top of the leaderboard remains static for the most part, and all of the top 6 tippers' maximum points possible range from 235-245, meaning they all possibly have a chance (I'm sure kevin would correct me with his scenarios).
It was an exciting day of hoops to make up for the previous one. 2 Michigan kicked off the day against 11 Tennessee and seemed to have the game relatively in hand, with a 15-point lead midway through the 2nd half and still up 72-64 with less than 2.5 minutes left. Then yours truly walked into Lucas Oil Stadium and all hell broke loose. The Volunteers got a quick 3-point play, followed by 1.5 minutes of scoreless play. The final 26 seconds included a UT jumper, followed by a turnover, followed by another 2-pointer, followed by another turnover. With the ball and down 1, Tennessee it appeared Michigan was called for a reach-in foul, but instead a charge was called before it happened, giving Michigan the ball. A free throw and a missed half-court heave later, the Wolverines were off to the Elite 8 73-71.
3 Iowa State, missing star player Georges Niang, showed how important he was during their matchup with 7 Connecticut. Niang's replacement, Daniel Edozie, played 7 minutes and recorded no stats, while UConn forward DeAndre Daniels went for 27 points and 10 rebounds. Iowa State tried to respond with 34 from their own Daniel Hogue, but the balanced attack of the Huskies was too much. In the final 5 minutes of the game, the Cyclones never got within 1 possession, and the upset was sealed 81-76.
In the most disappointing, heart-wrenching result of the evening (if one were an alum... so I've heard), the Battle of the Bluegrass was revisited between 4 Louisville and 8 Kentucky. Early on it seemed it might be a rout, as Louisville went up 18-5 on 4 turnovers and poor shooting from the Wildcats. However, by halftime it was 34-31. Louisville pulled away again in the 2nd half, up 50-44 and 56-50 at points, but held a 66-59 lead with 4.5 minutes when it all went wrong. A Kentucky dunk, and a block on the ensuing possession followed by a layup made it a 66-63 game. Another turnover led to a 3-point play, tying the game at 66. An Aaron Harrison 3-pointer with 40 seconds left put Kentucky up 70-68, and that was all she wrote. Louisville made 1 more free throw, but 2 missed shots to potentially tie the game both went awry, and Kentucky beat their rivals for the second time this year 74-69.
Everybody's upset pick 4 Michigan State put it all on the line against 1 Virginia, trying to keep their tournament hopes alive as well as end the unbelievable run by blue teams. The Spartans went up 21-11 early, but let it slowly bleed away to a 31-27 halftime advantage. It remained tight until MSU led 43-42 and decided to open the doors a bit. They went on an 8-2 run, but Virginia answered back with a 7-0 run, tying the game at 51 with under 2 minutes left. Five unanswered put Michigan State back up 56-51, and after a 3 in response it became a free throw shooting contest. The Spartans made 5/6 free throws down the stretch, only missing their last (purposely) while up 61-59 with 1.4 seconds left. A last second heave fell short, and the Spartans justified why everyone thought they were snubbed with a 4-seed.
So we head into the Elite 8, none of us with perfect brackets left but plenty with a chance to win! |

Not a lot of movement out front, but very interesting things are brewing just down the table. themonarch retains the lead, but with Arizona's loss he is completely out of picks, so he will remain at 218. In order for him to win, Connecticut must win tomorrow, then they also must beat Florida, followed by a national champion of either Connecticut, Wisconsin, or Kentucky. themonarch has never won this comp, and should he win the streak of 13 consecutive different winners would survive.
illiniman14, the 2010 champion, sits in 2nd. Should Michigan State win tomorrow or Florida go to the national championship game, he would surpass themonarch. However, all 4 tippers below the top 2 have higher max points possible remaining for the tournament.
George95, the 2012 champion, is in 3rd with the 2nd-highest max possible points. He needs the same results as illiniman14 to maximize his potential, but then Florida must also win the national championship for him to move into first and become the first repeat winner.
N-Bomb, the 2011 champion, is in 4th. Had he chosen his favorite Wisconsin Badgers to go to the Final Four, he would be tied for first at the moment - which just goes to show, you should always pick with your heart and not your head. As it stands right now, N-Bomb cannot win as he has the exact same picks remaining as George95.
Howie72, the 2007 champion, is in 5th and still poised to make a possible big run. He needs Michigan State to win the national championship in order to become the first repeat winner, but anything short of that he would remain behind illiniman14.
kevinatilusa, who has never won, is back in 6th but has the most max points possible of all tippers. That is because he has a unique championship game of Michigan and Michigan State. In order to win, Michigan must win the national championship game.
As it stands now, the odds of each person winning stands as follows:
1. illiniman14 9/32 (28.125%) 2. George95 8/32 (25%) 3. themonarch 7/32 (21.125%) 4. Howie72 4/32 (12.5%) 4. kevinatilusa 4/32 (12.5%)
All calculations done by hand, so if they're wrong, I apologize.
Now that everyone's thoroughly confused, on to the games. The first game was basically what we expected it to be. It was close for much of the first half and 11 Dayton even led 21-19 at one point, but then 1 Florida got angry, and you don't like them when they're angry. The Gators finished the half on a 19-3 run, leading 38-24. Dayton never got within 8 in the second half, and Florida cruised into the Final Four.
You may remember the last 2 Wisconsin game recap was short because it wasn't a great game. That wasn't so much the case this time. The largest lead either team got was 8, which 1 Arizona achieved twice in the first half. Both teams had 5-point leads in the second half, but it was a seesaw battle in the final 10 minutes, as neither team scored more than 3 points in a row, leading to overtime at 54-54. In OT, Wisconsin jumped out to an early lead, and was still up 64-63 with one minute left. With 13 seconds left at the same score, Arizona missed a potential go-ahead shot, but got the offensive rebound, and Nick Johnson drove down the lane but pushed off before shooting and was called for a charge. On the ensuing throw-in, the ball was tipped out of bounds, and after a lengthy official review, Arizona was awarded the ball with 3 seconds left. However, the final shot was released just after the buzzer sounded, and didn't go in anyway, giving Wisconsin their first Final Four berth since 2000.
Half of the Final Four is set. What dramatics wait for us tomorrow? Only time will tell. |

Well this is what I get for doing it all by hand: kevinatilusa can also win if Michigan and Michigan State both make the Final Four, and then Wisconsin beats Michigan State for the national championship. That updates the possible winning scenarios to: 1. illiniman14 8/32 (25%) 1. George95 8/32 (25%) 3. themonarch 7/32 (21.125%) 4. kevinatilusa 5/32 (15.625%) 5. Howie72 4/32 (12.5%)

Not too much movement in the table this week, as exactly 0 tippers got any games correct. The disappearance of Big Ten rivals Michigan and Michigan State leaves us with only 3 possible winners: themonarch, who has never previously won; illiniman14, who won in 2010; and George95, who won in 2012.
As mentioned yesterday, themonarch will win if 7 Connecticut defeats 1 Florida in the Final Four. After that, it doesn't matter what happens because no one will have any more live picks, and we will continue with our 13th different winner.
illiniman14 can only win if Florida beats Connecticut (naturally), but then loses in the national championship game. Faced with the possibility of having to root for Kentucky, I say 'On Wisconsin!'
George95 then can only win if Florida wins the national championship game.
So there you have it: there is a 50% chance of a new winner, and a 50% chance of a repeat winner. And we will know which result will happen on Saturday.
To the games that decided those matchups: 7 Connecticut got out to an early 12-2 lead on 4 Michigan State, but the Spartans would not go quietly into the night, pulling ahead 25-21 by halftime. It seemed they might take that momentum to victory, going up 32-23, but that 32-point wall proved costly. Connecticut went on a 12-0 run, and Michigan State didn't hit a field goal for nearly 7 minutes. They again stalled at 39 points, allowing the Huskies to go from up 41-39 to 49-39. The lead was cut into to the tune of 53-51, but that last-minute spurt was all the Spartans had in them. Connecticut won the final 30 seconds 7-3 (that 3 coming from a walk-on senior with 1 second left), and won 60-54.
It seemed that 2 Michigan might be able to pull away early against 8 Kentucky, but that 32-point wall struck again. Up 32-22, Michigan stalled until it was 32-30, and the first half ended tied at 37. Michigan wouldn't see the lead again for 7.5 minutes, after which there was never a lead more than 5 points. Kentucky led for most of the closing minutes by small margins, but the Wolverines finally tied the game at 72 following 3 offensive rebounds. With the game tied and shot clock off, Kentucky hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left, and a half-court heave fell short, leaving a final of 75-72.
The Final Four is set. We will know on Saturday whether or not we will have a new or repeat champion, and if it will be a repeat champion, then it will go down to the national championship game. More drama to come! |

After Arizona lost in the Elite 8 to Wisconsin, themonarch held a mere 3-point lead on the field with no live picks. He needed a spectacular series of events to occur in order to win, to the point where he could almost be ruled out as a realistic champion. He needed highly-favored Michigan State to lose to an upstart Connecticut team. So they did. He needed Michigan to refrain from reclaiming a spot in the Final Four against an 8-seeded Kentucky team fresh off an emotional win over their rival. So they did. And to top it off, he needed prohibitive favorite Florida, the #1 overall seed in the tournament, to lose to Connecticut, a puny 7-seed who were surely in over their heads. So they did.
And with that, in the 13th year this tournament has been held, we have our 13th different winner. Congratulations themonarch!
The game that cemented the victory was the first of the day, and was two stories within itself. The first 11 minutes were all Florida. The Gators went up 16-4 early, and it seemed the top overall seed might just put it away early. However, the rest of the game was won 59-37 by Connecticut. Within 3 minutes, UConn had it down to a 1-point lead, and led 25-22 at halftime. They opened up the second half to the tune of 31-22, and Florida got within 3 twice in the half, but it was to no avail. The Huskies pulled away and won 63-53, moving to the championship game.
To cap off the night, Wisconsin and Kentucky took the court, and while Wisconsin held a healthy lead for most of the first half, the Wildcats pulled off another late first half run to pull within 40-36. They finished an 11-3 run up 51-43, but then the Badgers came back to life, taking the lead back at 56-55. The lead grew to a maximum of 5 until it was notched up at 69-69 with 3 minutes left. With 16 seconds left and tied 71-71, Wisconsin was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. The first was missed, and the last 2 were put in, leaving Wisconsin up 73-71. But 9 seconds later, Aaron Harrison took an NBA-range 3-pointer with a man in his face which rattled home. After a missed jumper at the buzzer, that left Kentucky still alive for the national championship Monday night.
For our purposes, the national championship game will simply be housekeeping. But the title game will give us the highest combination of seeds ever with a #7 against a #8. Which team suddenly on fire will win? We see on Monday. |

As mentioned previously, this is simply housekeeping and getting the final game out of the way. Since Florida didn't come back from being defeated, themonarch keeps his victory.
The final game started off like several of Kentucky's most recent matchups: their opponent got a huge lead to start off, and then at the end of the first half they would pull it back within a reasonable margin. Connecticut went up 30-15 with just over 5 minutes left in the first half, but a 16-5 run by Kentucky made it a 35-31 ballgame. In the 2nd half, Kentucky got the lead down to 1 three times, but at no point during the game did they ever actually lead. In fact, after it was tied at 6-6, they never did that again either. With Connecticut up 48-47, 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions put them up 54-49, and poor free throw shooting by Kentucky iced the game away, making the Connecticut Huskies your new national champions! |
