Copago Your heart is truly noble in that you stand by your team through thick and thin. Such loyalty is most worthy in a football fan, and as you may guess, the rules I refer to are Gridiron Or American collegiate football, in my home football is king, and the Southeastern Conference is the kingdom. But it matters not as to who you root for, (though the truly blessed are Crimson Tide fans) if it truly speaks to your soul. If your team’s performance vaults you to the heights of ecstasy or drops you into the pit of despair, you understand that football whatever form it may encompass is the closest that we as “Civilized” men will come to battle. I mean the shield upon your arm sword in your hand watch the barbarians charge down the hill at me and my comrades. Face your opponent and leave it all on the field. That is the visceral, primal message that the “sport” gives to us. The members of your team, they are your tribe, they are your brothers, they are your sons. And may God have mercy on the souls of anyone who speaks ill of them. I have watched other forms of “Football” and I see in the stands the same instinctual reactions to magnificent victory and crushing defeat. It speaks to the soul. If any of you are in the Great state of Alabama, between the months of August and December look me up and enjoy the festival and spectacle of an Alabama, Crimson Tide Football game, Likewise If I ever find myself across the waters, I’ll find you we’ll hoist a pint or two, take me to the match, tell me who I’m rooting for, and I’ll carry on with the best of them. Roll Tide Roll!!!!

Oh War Wizard *swoon*! Said with such passion! quote: The members of your team, they are your tribe, they are your brothers, they are your sons.
So true. I would gladly take you to a Tigers game! There is a fantastic book by Nick Hornby called "Fever Pitch" (it was also made into a crap movie ... forget the movie, read the book) and even though it is about the authors undying love for Arsenal, his soccer team, it remains one of my favourite books. Any die hard fan of any team or sport will be able to identify with it, they could have done "insert your team here" for whenever Arsenal was mentioned and it would fit many a sports fanatic. Anyone else read it?

seen the movie. Last gasp goal gives Arsenal the league title. That's the beauty of soccer the low scoring means anything can happen. A lucky goal and the mighty fall. See Brazil 1990 world cup as an example.

Ok I was gong to include a quote here from Templar's earlier comments about RU being the sport of men and gods am incompetent and therefore failed miserably. However, what I would say is that as the most successful team in our club and hopefully doing the treble again this year ... RU is the sport of WOMEN, men and gods. Templar, you're obviously not from North Wales, a grimmer place I think I have never seen than Rhyl (perhaps Abergele ;-) ). The only game worth watching is Association Football and Copago, you're on the right track. Don't ever let anyone tell you that Arsenal are not the greatest football team ever to exist. I know what my devious contrymen do to foreignors where this stuff is concerned, there's a poor guy in San Francisco supporting Everton cos he asked my fiancee's advice ;-). COME ON THEN ROBSON, WE STUFFED YOU LAST WEEK, WE'LL STUFF YOU AGAIN ON SUNDAY !!!! THEN WE'LL SEE WHO NEEDS TO GET USED TO LOSING !!! (still fuming !!!)

Lupetta, you're right, Rhyl isn't the prettiest, but nowhere in England comes close to matching the beauty of Snowdonia or even the Vale of Clwyd!!! Actually, i don't mind soccer at all either, but supporting Arsenal???? The only part that's correct about that team is the very first part of their team name!!

Fosse, Fosse, Fosse ... I shall not waver in my opinion (although any team with a tiger mascot get my vote even if it is *shudder* Union) Rugby League is the best game. There was a song here many years ago that said it all ... "playing Rugby League football, it's the greatest game of all". Also "Simply the Best" by Tina Turner became the official theme song for a while and has stuck. The defence of this trial rests. (Old joke ... what is defence? Something you put around deyard .... groan)

Soccer Rules O.K. It is the official sport in every country in the world. Except U.S. for reasons that are beyond explanation. Soccer was the first and is the best. You can copy the Mona Lisa and give her a moustache if you want, that makes it different, not better.

Animal.. what is an 'official sport'? Surely the 'official sport' of Australia is Australian Rules'! (Making notes here, Copago?). The English should forget about inventing sports that they cannot play.. Rugby, Union, Darts (another Aussie world champ).. need I say more? And do not get me started on cricket Soccer in this country ranks a long way 4th in football codes, but only because the National Institute of Dramtic Arts is under-funded.

Geez Ozzz, that's rough, you gotta let the Brits play something! And why would Australian Rules have to be the 'official sport' for Australia? Now I'm not saying that AFL isn't a national sport, but why can't we have two considering there are two states, one being the most populous and the other being close to second, that it isn't the main winter code? Perhaps each state has its official sport. (is there an actual official sport? must search around) As for the cricket, I think England are touring here next summer ... that should make for some pretty good conversation come the time.

All this pom bashing reminds me of a question I was asked by an Australian recently - what's the difference between a 747 load of poms and the 'plane itself landing at Sydney airport? The 747 stops whining once the engines are switched off! But ozzz2002 I seem to recall that the last few times England have played Australia at RU they beat them!

The following link is kind of humourous in this discussion: Rugby, Grubbers, Ruggers & Me I think it could almost equally apply to League as well as it does to NFL!!

I like the English, too! I used to be one many generations ago. Having said that, I am proud to be a colonial, though. I loved the 'thugby' site, it was a classic! I did a bit of prowling around, too, and could not reallty find an official football code for Australia; I don't think there is such an animal.. ozzz [Editted by Templar to make your BOLD Type work!! ] [ 03-11-2002: Message edited by: TemplarLLM ]
