I'm thinking it's going to be GTHO, if anyone, who may be able to answer this poser ...

What didn't Balmain do in 1970 that previously hadn't been done since St George in 1949?

hmm, I've missed this!
double negatives .. nothing but a WAG at the moment:

In 1949 St George came 3rd, won the major semi against Souths 16-2, the final 18-7 against Balmain and the Grand Final against Souths 19-12 (Grand Finals weren't manadatory until 1954). The defending title holders were Wests, and they were knocked out by Balmain in the minor semi.

In 1970 Balmain (the defending title holders) finished 6th and didn't make the semis. Three players from the 1970 St George team captained Australia: Graeme Langlands, Phil Hawthorne & Billy Smith (first time this feat had been achieved). Souths beat Manly 23-12 in the Grand Final.

and having found that, I'm none the wiser .. can't see what Balmain didn't do in 1970, besides fail to make the semis as defending champions .. St George weren't defending champs in 1949 .. I'll have another go over the weekend

btw, am I even remotely warm?

I'm so sorry, George but I stuffed up .... again. [Embarrassed] [Embarrassed] Had it right the first time ... shouldn't have edited.

Sheesh, I'm an idiot ... the year for the St George one is 1950 and really your right on the money with the Balmain explanation.

Sorry. [Frown]

ok, gotcha .. in 1950 St George (the defending title holders), finished 5th and failed to make the semi-finals .. btw, where'd you pull that piece of trivia from?!

try this one:-
for 13 seasons, from 1954 to 1966, St George did not lose a game at Kogarah Jubilee Oval .. that, plus their 11 consecutive titles 1956 to 1966, has to be some sort of world record

I got the "Tiger Tiger Burning Bright", (history of Balmain, up until the merge) book for my b'day a couple weeks ago ... so any information about other teams is only if it relates to Balmain. [Smile] Actually it's great ... lots of pics from the pre merge days and the names that I'd almost forgotten. Olsen Philipana, Kerry Hemsley (although how could you forget him?)Wayne Wigham. Had to go and dig out my old autograph book and see how many of them I had ... I must have like Hemsley, have it about 5 times. [Wink]

And as for your record at Jubilee ... well, damn I wish it was for the Tiges at Leichhardt. [Big Grin] Have you seen this page?. Check it out and explain why the crowds for the Grand Final would go up like this
1942 26,171
1943 60,992
1944 24,186
Perhaps war years would have something to do with it? I dunno.
