Things are hotting up with the World Cup just around the corner.

Let's get a WC quiz chain going!

The home countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland didn't compete in the first world cup which took place in Uruguay in 1930.

Why not???

I know this happened with Manchester United in the 1950s, but could it be something to do with the respective FA's and their stance about world football. Man Utd were not allowed to enter a European competition because of the same thing.

There was a specific grievance with FIFA a couple of years prior to the competition. Can you get any closer???

I'll have a wild stab in the dark about this one then. Hmm. Was it that The English FA in particular did not recognise FIFA as a world governing body?

Well, we all kicked up over payments to amateur players and withdrew from FIFA in 1928, so weren't actually eligible to play.

Of the 41 countries who were members of FIFA only 13 took part, mainly because of the difficulties getting teams to the venue.

Next??

So, in a way let's agree to disagree. Ok. Here's one.

How many people hold the record for most goals scored in one World Cup match and who are they?

Is one a Hungarian Player?? I know that they beat West Germany 8-3 and South Korea 9-0 in 1954, but I can't find the individual goal scorers.

That would be Paul Gascoine janney, and Bobby wasn't far wrong!!

We'd better wait until the previous question has been answered before we post another one, as mine wasn't actually a complete answer.

I am not totally sure on how many have done this, but I do know that a Russian player scored 5 goals in a game during a World Cup finals. I have heard that someone else has done it though.

That was a match where 3 world cup records were broken in 1994.

Russia 6 - 1 Cameroon

Oleg Salenko scored 5 for Russia against Cameroon.
Roger Milla became the oldest player and the oldest ever goalscorer at the age of 42.

This is sort of a trick question. I believed it was Bryan Robson vs France in 27 seconds in 1982, but some say it was an Asian or African that was faster. Can you shed any light Izzi?

If I read your question right Sparky, you're after Andreas Brehme who scored for West Germany against Argentina in the 1990 world cup final.

The Final in 1994 ended in a goaless draw and went into extra time.

I'll go for Diego Maradona in Mexico 1986, but I would have to agree with Izzi about the German player who scored a late penalty in open time....

I think you are mis-reading the question.

The question is about a goal scored from open play and not open time.

I think you will find that open play is defined as a goal that is scored from build up play and not a set piece/dead ball situation.

BTW..Maradona is wrong also.

Jorge Burrachaga scored in the 84th minute, from an assisted pass by Maradona.

You got it izzi.

The '94 final ended 0-0 and went to penalties and the 1990 final was won by an Andreas Brehme penalty.

Another for you to ponder.

Who is the youngest player to appear in the WC Finals?
