I had a feeling that Pele's name would get mentioned [Smile]

However, it is not the correct answer.

I'd go along with that, a mere slip of a lad at 17 was our Norman.

Quite a few players have scored hat-tricks during the World cup matches, but name the one who managed to score a hat-trick in two successive world cup matches exactly 4 years apart to the day. [Wink]

I remember something about Gabriel Batistuta in 1994 & 1998. Could be wrong though, so I wont set another until I get confirmation.

I'll go along with Batistuta. vs Greece in 94 and then vs Jamaica in 98.

As SS didn't set a poser I hope you don't mind me setting another [Wink]

Hungary's Laszlo Kiss has two World Cup feats under his belt which happened in the same match.
Can you name them?

Sparks, me old mate, indeed I can...... [Wink]

Fastest World Cup hat-trick, against El Salvador in 1982. 70, 74 and 77 minutes.

Secondly, he is thus far the only player, who having come on as a sub. has scored a hat-trick.

The great 'Pele' jointly holds the record for having scored in 4 World Cups. (58, 62, 66 and 70). Who does he share this record with?

Slow down there Sparky [Big Grin] You'll have to work on mine some more.

You've just mentioned the finals, I meant all rounds including qualifiers . [Wink]

In the meantime I'll see if I can solve yours. [Smile]

Ok, I think I have yours sorted Sparky.

Was it Sweden & Brazil, they've met a total of 7 times.

1938, 50, 58, 78, 90 and twice during the 1994 finals.

I have to make a confession here - I've found conflicting evidence regarding my last answer, so we'll wait and see what you come up with and then haggle over it - OK!!! [Big Grin]

.. so we can keep track of things, let's number the questions - this is where we've been, and where we are at the moment
[ Q11 is unanswered ]

=========================

Q1 izzi
The home countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland didn't compete in the first world cup which took place in Uruguay in 1930. Why not???
A1 Sinister Slaughter
Was it that The English FA in particular did not recognise FIFA as a world governing body
(we all kicked up over payments to amateur players and withdrew from FIFA in 1928, so weren't actually eligible to play)

Q2 Sinister Slaughter
How many people hold the record for most goals scored in one World Cup match and who are they?
A2 izzi
That was a match where 3 world cup records were broken in 1994. Russia 6 - 1 Cameroon. Oleg Salenko scored 5 for Russia against Cameroon. Roger Milla became the oldest player and the oldest ever goalscorer at the age of

A5 sparky2512
That would be Karl-Heinz Rummenigge

Q6 sparky2512
Before the France '98, when was, and who scored, the last goal scored from open play in a World Cup Final?
(open play is defined as a goal that is scored from build up play and not a set piece/dead ball situation)
A6 izzi
Jorge Burrachaga scored in the 84th minute, from an assisted pass by Maradona.
(The '94 final ended 0-0 and went to penalties and the 1990 final was won by an Andreas Brehme penalty.)

Who is the youngest player to appear in the WC Finals?
A7 Sinister Slaughter
Big Norman Whiteside for Northern Ireland in 1982.

[ Q11 is unsanswered]

How's this sound (as we all live across numerous time zones)?
whenever an answer is posted that person can pose the next question (remembering to number it, sequentially!) .. when the person who posted the question logs back in to FT, he or she advises whether the answer is right-or-wrong .. if it's wrong he or she can say answer by wez is wrong, Q24 is still alive, and kicking, or something like that

A11 the 2002 World Cup
there were 171 countries in 1998 and 198 countries in 2002

Q13. From 1930 to 1998: 25 own goals've scored during the World Cup Finals (by 25 different players) - 5 of these 25 have also got onto the correct side of the scoresheet by scoring for their country. One of these 5 did this in the same match - who is he?

I've found this report, Thailand 2 - 1 Lebanon, where Sakesan Pituratana scored for both teams in this World Cup match.

However as this is only a qualifier it might not be the one you're looking for.

.............

Sorry, scratch that idea - the year's no good.

Still looking!!

A13 Ernie Brandts of Holland in the second phase match against Italy in 1978.

Q14 Which year saw the first penalty shoot out in the World Cup Finals? Who were involved? And what was the outcome?

A14 1982 Semi-Final France v West Germany 3-3 (4-5) played July 8th
1-1 half-time 45min, 1-1 full time 90min
3-3 extra time 120min (France were leading 3-1 at half-time in extra time!)

Q15. Ther've been 14 penalty shootouts in World Cup finals 1982-1998, and all except 2 were decided after the mandatory 5 kicks each. France v West Germany 1982 is one that went to 6 kicks each, which match is the other one?

Sorry, I've only just got back to catch up on this one.

This is where I found the confilcting evidence before. Some web sites specify number of entries, whereas others give entries + host + cup holder ...... but I won't haggle [Wink] , and we'll call this one done.

I have no doubt that you are right George.

A15 is correct

A16 1954 Switzerland
that's one of the reasons there are conflicting reports about goalscorers in previous Finals

Q17. On 11-Apr-2001 Archie Thompson set a FIFA record for the number of goals scored by an individual in a World Cup match (qualifiers or finals), when he scored 13 in Australia's 31-0 win against American Samoa. That put him at number #1 on the list, top of the pile. Who's at number #2?

A17 #2 is Iran's Karim Bagheri, who scored 7 in an Asia Group 2 qualifier for the 98 WC on the 4th June 97, against the Maldives.

Oh.........and apparently, the same feat was achieved by some Aussie or other. [Big Grin] Gary Cole, on the 14th August 81 in an 82 prelim... against the Fiji Islands.

Q18 In the 1966 World Cup semi-final against England, what did Portugal's Eusebio end?
