A 25 will do Sparky, right player, right game, but the way I read it the ball hit him on the head unintentionally and glanced past our keeper. No one could have been more astonished than Joe to have found that he had scored.
...........
A26
Rumour has it that Jules hid it under his bed, but I don't think that story was ever verified, so might not be what you want Sparky.
Q27
What was unusual about the results of matches in the 1930 Montevideo series? [ 05-15-2002, 10:14 AM: Message edited by: izzi ]

This one's sat here long enough!
I have a wild stab that there were no Q's so the answer is false.

so we don't have to scroll back through all of this, these are all the questions so far:
Q1 izzi The home countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland didn't compete in the first world cup which took place in Uruguay in 1930. Why not??? A1 Sinister Slaughter Was it that The English FA in particular did not recognise FIFA as a world governing body (we all kicked up over payments to amateur players and withdrew from FIFA in 1928, so weren't actually eligible to play)
Q2 Sinister Slaughter How many people hold the record for most goals scored in one World Cup match and who are they? A2 izzi That was a match where 3 world cup records were broken in 1994. Russia 6 - 1 Cameroon. Oleg Salenko scored 5 for Russia against Cameroon. Roger Milla became the oldest player and the oldest ever goalscorer at the age of
Q3 janney Whilst manager of the England football team, who did 'Bobby Robson describe as 'daft as a brush'? A3 izzi that would be Paul Gascoine janney, and Bobby wasn't far wrong!!
Q4 izzi Who scored the quickest goal in any World Cup finals match? (16 seconds in 1962) A4 wez Vaclav Masek, Czechoslovakia, v Mexico, June 7
Q5 wez Who is the only Captain to lose two World Cup Finals? A5 sparky2512 That would be Karl-Heinz Rummenigge
Q6 sparky2512 Before the France '98, when was, and who scored, the last goal scored from open play in a World Cup Final? (open play is defined as a goal that is scored from build up play and not a set piece/dead ball situation) A6 izzi Jorge Burrachaga scored in the 84th minute, from an assisted pass by Maradona. (The '94 final ended 0-0 and went to penalties and the 1990 final was won by an Andreas Brehme penalty.)
Q7 sparky2512 Who is the youngest player to appear in the WC Finals? A7 Sinister Slaughter Big Norman Whiteside for Northern Ireland in 1982.
Q8 izzi Quite a few players have scored hat-tricks during the World cup matches, but name the one who managed to score a hat-trick in two successive world cup matches exactly 4 years apart to the day? A8 Sinister Slaughter Gabriel Batistuta in 1994 & 1998. (Batistuta. vs Greece in 94 and then vs Jamaica in 98)
Q9 sparky2512 Hungary's Laszlo Kiss has two World Cup feats under his belt which happened in the same match. Can you name them? A9 wez Fastest World Cup hat-trick, against El Salvador in 1982. 70, 74 and 77 minutes. Secondly, he is thus far the only player, who having come on as a sub. has scored a hat-trick.
Q10 wez The great 'Pele' jointly holds the record for having scored in 4 World Cups. (58, 62, 66 and 70). Who does he share this record with? A10 izzi Uwe Seeler, a half decent West German Player scored in 1958, 62, 66 & 70.
Q11 izzi What's the highest number of countries to have competed in any of the world cups, and for which year? (all rounds including qualifiers ) A11 gtho4 the 2002 World Cup, there were 171 countries in 1998 and 198 countries in 2002
Q12 sparky2512 Which to teams have played each other the most times in World Cup Finals history and how many times have they met? A12 izzi Was it Sweden & Brazil, they've met a total of 7 times. 1938, 50, 58, 78, 90 and twice during the 1994 finals.
Q13 gtho4 From 1930 to 1998: 25 own goals've scored during the World Cup Finals (by 25 different players) - 5 of these 25 have also got onto the correct side of the scoresheet by scoring for their country. One of these 5 did this in the same match - who is he? A13 sparky2512 Ernie Brandts of Holland in the second phase match against Italy in 1978.
Q14 sparky2512 Which year saw the first penalty shoot out in the World Cup Finals? Who were involved? And what was the outcome? A14 gtho4 1982 Semi-Final France v West Germany 3-3 (4-5) played July 8th 1-1 half-time 45min, 1-1 full time 90min 3-3 extra time 120min (France were leading 3-1 at half-time in extra time!)
Q15 gtho4 There've been 14 penalty shootouts in World Cup finals 1982-1998, and all except 2 were decided after the mandatory 5 kicks each. France v West Germany 1982 is one that went to 6 kicks each, which match is the other one? A15 izzi Sweden v Romania in 1994
Q16 izzi In which World Cup did it become compuslory for teams to wear numbered shirts in the finals? A16 gtho4 1954 Switzerland, that's one of the reasons there are conflicting reports about goalscorers in previous Finals
Q17 gtho4 On 11-Apr-2001 Archie Thompson set a FIFA record for the number of goals scored by an individual in a World Cup match (qualifiers or finals), when he scored 13 in Australia's 31-0 win against American Samoa. That put him at number #1 on the list, top of the pile. Who's at number #2? A17 wez Australia's David Zdrillic who scored 8 goals in that very same match against American Samoa
Q18 wez In the 1966 World Cup semi-final against England, what did Portugal's Eusebio end? A18 izzi Eusabio scored a penalty for Portugal, ending a succession of 6 matches with clean sheets. We'd stuffed Mexico, Denmark and France by two goals, Argentina and Poland by one, and had a goaless draw against Uruguay A18 Sypher Eusebio ended England's clear sheet by scoring a single goal against them at Wembley. As it happens, he also finished top-scorer of that World Cup !! wez Gordon Banks had actually kept 7 successive clean sheets for England up to that point. A record which, incidentally, still stands........ izzi Springett was in goal for the match against Norway. Our Gordon had actually kept two clean sheets before that. In May against Yugoslavia and then again in the WC finals against Finland.
Q19 izzi Which Juventus player donned a Welsh shirt to play in the 1958 WC finals? A19 gtho4 who else but John Charles, also of Leeds United izzi The 'Gentle Giant' was the first British player to be transferred to a foreign club. He was never cautioned or sent off in a career spanning 17 years
Q20 gtho4 1978 World Cup Finals: Peru v. Poland 0-1 .. the goal-keeper for Peru was booked during this match for a foul. What was unusual about where he was booked? A20 izzi Quiroga always seemed to spend too much time down the other end so I assume that's where he got booked. A21 Sypher Peruvian goalkeeper Ramon Quiroga made a habit of coming out of his penalty area to help his team mates in defense but in this game he went further to the other half of the field and pulled down Polish player Grzegroz Lato with a rugby tackle !!
Q21 Sypher Why did the Uruguayan goalkeeper Antonio Mazzali return home before kick-off of the 1930 finals? A21 izzi He was sacked for breaking their tough curfew rules and went home disgraced.
Q22 izzi During England's finest hour and a half, the World Cup final 1966 on Wembley turf, (have you noticed how proud I am of our lads), which two players collided in mid air and who ended up unconscious? A22 the German goalkeeper Hans Tilkowski was knocked out ... Bobby Charlton passed it to Geoff Hurst, who collided with the goalie izzi Tilkowski was nicknamed 'Dracula' by the England squad, because he was so scared of crosses
Q23 gtho4 Q23. World Cup Mexico 1986. England v Argentina: Maradonna and The Hand of God. Which hand did he use? A23 Sypher Thinking hard and visualising the scene...and with only a 50/50 pick....It was the Left Hand !!
Q24 Sypher Why did the USA trainer have to be carried off unconscious during a 1930 World Cup match against Argentina? A24 gtho4 Coll rushed onto the field during the second half of the World Cup semi-final between the U.S. and Argentina, his case fell open, a bottle of chloroform fell out, it broke, he was overcome by the fumes and had to be carried off. Some stories say that Coll rushed onto the field to protest a decision, others that he ran on when an American player was injured. Whatever, the stories all make Jack Coll appear to be something of a comic character, and the incident would not seem amiss in one of those old Charlie Chaplin movies.
Q25 izzi In 1950 England were one of the favourites to lift the then Jules Rimet trophy, but we were denied by a defeat by USA. How was the only goal scored and by whom? A25 sparky2512 It was scored by Joseph Nicolas Gaetjens. He apparently dived 12 feet to score with a diving header. izzi right player, right game, but the way I read it the ball hit him on the head unintentionally and glanced past our keeper. No one could have been more astonished than Joe to have found that he had scored.
Q26 sparky2512 Where was the Jules Rimet Trophy kept during the war time before the 1950 World Cup? A26 izzi Rumour has it that Jules hid it under his bed, but I don't think that story was ever verified, so might not be what you want Sparky. wez the rumour I heard was, FIFA Vice-President, Dr. Ottorino Barassi, hid it under his bed. Either that or dear old Jules and Otto were an item during WWII and were infact sleepi.......well, you get the idea!
Q27 izzi What was unusual about the results of matches in the 1930 Montevideo series? A27 gtho4 there were no drawn matches, there was a winner in every single game
Q28 gtho4 At Guadalajara on 25th June, 1986 Bruno Bellone (France) was substituted by Daniel Xuereb in the 1986 semi-final France v West Germany (2-0). The X in Daniel's name completed the set and thus all 26 letters of the alphabet had appeared in the World Cup Finals (1986 was the 13th). True or False? A28 Sinister Slaughter True, After doing a lot of Googling for some of them, here's an A-Z: ALTOBELLI, Alessandro (ITALY) BANKS, Gordon (ENGLAND) CHARLTON, Bobby (ENGLAND) DE NAPOLI, Fernando (ITALY) EDINHO (BRAZIL) FERNANDEZ, Luis (FRANCE) GEMMILL, Archie (SCOTLAND) HALLER, Helmut (WEST GERMANY) ISKRENOV, Bojidar (SOVIET UNION) JAIRZINHO (BRAZIL) KUZNETSOV, Oleg (SOVIET UNION) LINEKER, Gary (ENGAND) MARADONA, Diego (ARGENTINA) NEGRETE, Manuel (MEXICO) OSTROWSKI, Marek (POLAND) PELE (BRAZIL) QUIROGA, Ramon (PERU) ROCHETEAU, Dominique (FRANCE) SOCRATES (BRAZIL) TARDELLI, Marco (ITALY) URIBE, Julio Cesar (PERU) VALDANO, Jorge (ARGENTINA) WILKINS, Ray (ENGLAND) XUEREB, Daniel (FRANCE) YAKOVENKO, Pavel (SOVIET UNION) ZOFF, Dino (ITALY)
Q29 izzi Going back to the original World Cup in 1930, who designed the trophy? A29 wez The original World Cup trophy was designed and sculpted by Frenchman Abel Lafleur.
Q30 wez Who designed the present World Cup trophy? A30 gtho4 Silvio Gazazniga
Q31 gtho4 Excluding automatic qualification as host or as holder, one country has qualified 6 times in-a-row (no other country has achieved this feat). Which country? they're playing in the 2002, so it's one of 29, as South Korea, Japan and France were automatic qualifiers 1982-1986-1990-1994-1998-2002 A31
.
Q32 izzi When did the first penalty shootout take place and who took 'em?
.
Q31 and Q32 are live questions
================================ as we all live across numerous time zones: whoever posts an answer can pose the next question .. when the person who posted the question logs back in to FT, he or she advises whether the answer is right-or-wrong .. if it's wrong he or she can say answer by wez is wrong, Q73 is still live

... can i play?
A33
tricky one this - the first game to finish scoreless was Brazil v England on 11/6/1958 (rapidly followed four days later by Sweden v Wales).
... However the game between Czechoslovakia & Holland on 5/6/1938 was scoreless at full time but the Czechs went on to win 3-0 after extra time.
Q34
.. not stricly WC but ...
Three players have represented England whilst playing for 5 clubs sides. Who and which clubs?

sorry should've made things a bit clearer ...
The club sides refer to when the player was selected. i.e. Kevin Keegan would be Liverpool, SV Hamburg, Southampton (i think !!) but not S****horpe or Newcastle as he didn't play for England whilst at either of those clubs ....
hope this helps ...

Q34. Completely correct!
it's normally the Dave Watson - Werder Bremen link that's hard to find!
A35. England had 13 points and a goal difference of +8 (12-4).
Q35. Which three England players appeared in the Squads for TWO world cup finals without making a single appearance ?
PS Hurrah for Senegal !!

I think it can only be one of two Bobby's, Moore and Charlton.
I'll settle for Charlton being the older of the two.
