- Serena Williams won her sixth US Open women's singles title without dropping a set, and along the way, set a slew of records: she is now equal with Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on 18 Grand Slam singles titles behind only Steffi Graf in the Open era (22). Serena Williams also became the first player to win three consecutive US Open titles since Chris Evert, who swept four in a row from 1975 to 1978. This was also the third year that Serena won the US Open without losing a set (2002 and 2008). For good measure, she is yet to lose in the US Open when she was seeded 1
 - But the rest of the tournament was a complete lottery, as none of the other top 8 seeds made it to even the quarterfinals. A resurgent Caroline Wozniacki at number 10, was the next highest seed in the last 8! Shaui Peng and Belinda Bencic were among those who made it, as did Ekaterina Makarova and Sara Errani. To be fair to the last two named, both were in the quarters last year as well!
- But we continued to plumb new depths in our tipping comp here, with Serena Williams almost exclusively winning us most of our points
With a grand total of 46 out of a possible 234 points, srini701 wins the 2014 US Open women's comp (19.6% of the actual score!) N-Bomb and paper_aero filled the podium spots. All our medallists can thank Victoria Azarenka for their medals. The difference in standings was made by the other quarterfinalists they each picked. - Howie72, Dizart and George95 all had only Serena winning them their points, but Howie's "poorer" tie-break score sees him taking home the spoon for this year.
- Will we do any better in the men's competition? watch this space for the men's results to follow

- For the first time since the 2005 Australian Open, none of the "Big Four" (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray) made it to the final of a Grand Slam tournament! Even when Juan Martin Del Potro and Stan Wawrinka managed to win a slam each in this period, they had one of the big four across the net to contend with in the final!
- Marin Cilic becomes the first No. 14 seed to win a major title in the Open era, and the first US Open champion outside the Top 10 since No. 17 Pete Sampras won in 2002. His previous best in a slam was semifinals at Australian Open in 2010 and a quarterfinals in this year's Wimbledon!
- Kei Nishikori's story is even better!! He is the first Japanese to make it to the last 8 of a Slam since Shuzo Matsuoka did it in 1995
And to reach the final, he took down No. 5 Milos Raonic, No. 3 Stan Wawrinka and No. 1 Novak Djokovic in successive rounds! New York truly is the MOST egalitarian of all Grand Slams - BxBarracuda had the temerity to put his money on Cilic to reach the last 4 and for Nishikori to make it to last 8 here and it paid off most handsomely, as he wins this year's US Open men's comp here by a whopping 20 points! I bet he would have made a bag of money had he done the same on the betting market too
- Dizart took home the silver while the ever persistent wwe84's chances paid off, landing him a bronze.
- Like in the women's comp, we had 3 people thanking just 2 men for all their points. Djokovic and Federer's scores were all that were left for ozzz, george95 and gtho4, and the tie-break ensured gtho4 finished bottom of the heap for 2014
That's it then for 2014...thank you for continuing to play the Grand Slams, and see you all at the Australian Open in 2015 next
