The ten matches in the final qualifying round (aka the play-off round) were completed during the week. The 10 winners will join the 22 teams who were exempt until the group phase. The draw for the group phase took place yesterday. If you've got a few hours to kill and/or have an insomnia attack and can't hit the sack, you can read the complete details of the qualifying rounds and the exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2014-15. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there maybe a few qualifiers whose team names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences on Tuesday 16th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and 19 rounds later the Champions League Final will be played, after almost 9 months, on Saturday 6th June 2015 at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany. There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 10th December and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 17th February 2015. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points
default
full-time
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts).
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time and shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point ... or 1 of 2 if we have
more than 10 runners, 1 of 3 if we have more than 15 runners.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus points will be used. |
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as there are 4 time zones in Europe, and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 4 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. We have had multiple winners of this comp, but no-one has won it back-to-back to successfully defend their UEFA title .. Dizart won it last year from gtho4. . Last year we had 16 runners and everyone is back for another dose except for KrivoyRog. We have two new recruits, Lpez and acilarincocugu, making it a field of 17 for this year's Champions League tipping comp. Welcome aboard!
Week 1 of 19 sees acilarincocugu jump to an early lead, on a countback from srini701 .. wwe84 is all on his lonesome, bringing up the rear with the first wooden spoon. Liverpool scored their winner in the 92nd .. wwe84 would've avoided the spoon if this game had finished a draw (the five players above him would've collected a spoon each).
Three games were picked by everyone, or all bar one .. and four games were picked by one or two, yielding five bonus points for solo picks .. srini701 collected two of them!
Four players picked Olympiakos to hold the defending European Champions to a draw, but ozzz2002 picked them to win after he put the question to the Ouija Board he found inside a box in his garage. It was either that or he used a dartboard.
The next round starts in a few hours : UEFA ( 2 ) Wed 17th September. Let's see if these 8 games go according to form, or we have another set of upsets. |

paper-aero & wwe84 were the other weekly winners with 4/8 .. wwe84 flew up the table from equal last to equal 4th, just 2 pts behind the leaders, as two of his four were solo picks!
dg_dave and ozzz2002 collected back-to-back wooden spoons to retain a share of last place.
As no-one picked the 3-2 upset win by PSG over Barcelona, the six players who picked a draw scored a bonus pt each. The next round starts in less than 11 hrs : UEFA ( 4 ) Wed 1st October. |

. The dead-heat out front is no more .. srini701 picks 7/8 (two of them were solo picks!) to blow everyone out of the water. He's jumped up into first and skipped away to a very healthy 3 point margin. The next 3 pts cover the 8 players running 2nd to 9th.
What did dg_dave achieve that no-one else did .. he kept his spot from last week. The rest of us went up or down a spot or two, or three.

. We had a full house this week .. 17 of 17 lodged picks.
srini701 retains his very healthy 3 point margin out front. The next 3 points cover the next 10 players (last week 3 points covered the next 8 players).
Four players scored 7/8 for the weekly win. They all missed the upset in Moscow, which denied them a perfect pick bonus. It's a second weekly win for paper_aero but a first for the other three: dg_dave, N-Bomb and Sypher.
There was just one bonus point this week .. which doesn't happen that often (it happened twice last season and just once the year before that). The last time we had *zero* bonus points was almost 3 years ago in November 2011.
New personal highs and lows for the season were set by 8 players:
High: illiniman14 (again), Dizart (again), paper-aero and Sypher.
Low : BxBarracuda (again), George95 (again), ozzz2002 (again) and acilarincocugu (again).
Despite everyone missing one game, between us we picked a season-best weekly average of 67.6% .. in fact it's high enough for an entry in the UEFA Record Book (see above, in red). The next round is tonight/tomorrow morning: UEFA ( 6 ) Wed 22nd October .. 16 replies have been posted to that thread, which means we're still missing one person. |

srini701 retains his lead, which is reduced slightly from 3 pts to 2 pts. He had a look in his rear vision mirror .. it's a scary sight, *seven* smiles and seven sets of pearly whites. There are seven players there, separated by a single solitary point.
Once gain we had four player score a weekly win. All we repeat performances except for LeoDaVinci, his first for the season. The other three, Dizart, paper-aero sand Sypher, all climbed to new highs for the season.
acilarincocugu collects back-to-back wooden spoons and falls to a new low for the season. BxBarracuda also fell to a new low for the season. |
