We are inside of a month to the start of the new season, with practices starting even earlier this year. This is the third iteration of our NCAA basktball comp, and here are the rules: 1. One point per tip 2. Deadline will be midnight Friday FT time with a short grace period of 2-3 hours, except for week 1 which will be midnight Thursday (with grace period) and "week" 4, which is mid-week for the Big Ten-ACC Challenge and the SEC-Big 12 Challenge, which will be midnight Monday night (with grace period). 3. Late tips get a 1-point deduction. 4. Default tips are road teams (or those listed first for neutral-site games); or wooden spoon if it is higher 5. Late starters will enter at the lowest score at that time, and after 4 weeks of not tipping you will be considered inactive. 6. End-of-season tiebreakers are HOF v. WS differential; then HOFs; then bonus points. - This comp is separate from the March Madness comp Bonus Points 1. One point for solo picks or one of two 2. One point for picking 13+/15 3. Ineligible for bonus points if tipper picks all home teams or all but one -The team listed second is considered the 'home' team, even for neutral-site games.

We start the season seemingly where we ended last season, with illiniman14 out front, thanks in large part to the upset win of Winthrop over Clemson. However, the entire pack is close by as all but one finished with double digits on the week. In fact, BxBarracuda 9 matches the highest spoon score of all last year.
The opening weeks often want for high-quality matchups, but the first week of the college basketball season gave us some good matches to start off the year. As mentioned above, Winthrop defeated an ACC foe on the road. Miami, however, stuck up for the conference by knocking off #7 Florida 69-67. And Frank Martin's South Carolina is starting to show their potential, losing to Baylor by only 4, 69-65.
The first week may have also given us a good idea of who we'll see in the championship come the end of the season. #1 Kentucky smoked #5 Kansas 72-40. Meanwhile, #4 Duke ran the court on #19 Michigan State 81-71.
A programming note for next week, Kansas State-Purdue is listed twice, so everyone gets the game listed "at" (except illiniman14 and N-Bomb, as that is the only one they did) and the game listed as a neutral site game will be counted, since it is actually a neutral site game.

Another week, another batch of consistent and high scores from the entire field. We have a new high for the wooden spoon with 10, but yet no one earned a near-perfect pick bonus point. The current top of the table might as well had been decided by just week 2, as all 4 HoFs are at the top, and the 2 spoons are at the bottom. Howie72 and wwe84 did pick up solo bonuses for taking the upset with Providence in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-off Tournament.
An accounting error gave everybody 1 pick, but 4 other games were also picked by everyone. wwe84 was also a point away from picking up a HoF as he picked Brigham Young to upend San Diego State, but they fell in two overtimes.

A week full of close games turned the table sideways, as a 2-point lead for illiniman14 vanished into a 2-point deficit to gtho4 and Howie72. George95 is now the only tipper without a spoon over the entirety of the NCAA Basketball comp, ongoing at 39 weeks. It also ends a 15-week run for illiniman14 at the top dating back to last season. Elsewhere, BxBarracuda storms out of the 10th spot with a HoF this week into a tie for 8th and still only 5 back of the podium.
Old Dominion was the story of our comp this week, taking down #14 VCU 73-67 and giving Howie72 and wwe84 a solo bonus to boot. However, DePaul's upset over Stanford nobody saw coming, and it wasn't even close at 87-72. #1 Kentucky, Utah, and Maryland all gave every tipper a point though, as they easily dispatched their opponents.

The Big Ten-ACC and SEC-Big 12 Challenges provided great matchups, and Sypher saw most of them coming. He notched a perfect bonus, only missing the Purdue victory and the Iowa upset, which only wwe84 predicted. With an 11/15 performance, gtho4 takes the lead solo for the first time since winning the inaugural NCAA basketball comp.
The game of the round was easily Notre Dame taking down #19 Michigan State in overtime 79-78. The premiere matchups ended up being somewhat one-sided, as #2 Wisconsin fell at home to #4 Duke 80-70, and #1 Kentucky controlled #6 Texas 63-51.
As previously mentioned, the big upset was Iowa over #12 North Carolina 60-55. The only game where the entire field picked the same team was #17 Michigan over Syracuse, although they won close 68-65.

With finals over, the comp organizer suddenly finds himself with plenty of time to update his overdue comp, so here we go. gtho4 remains at the top of the leaderboard, while N-Bomb surges from behind to take second place with a HoF performance. At the bottom of the table, another switch leaves ozzz2002 in the only double-digit spot as he takes a default.
The game of the weekend was one that almost everyone expected: #3 Arizona hosted #9 Gonzaga, and the two teams were tied at halftime, tied after regulation, and then scored a total of 9 points in overtime leading to a Wildcats victory 63-66. The game that shocked everyone was St. John's taking down Syracuse 69-57 on the road.

gtho4 storms out to a 3-point lead as he picks up a HoF as well as 2 bonus points for upset picks of SMU and Washington, the latter of which he was the only tipper to choose. Howie72 takes over second and illiniman14 jumps to fourth as they both pick up HoFs as well. Four tippers picked up spoons this week, but not George95, who extends his spoonless streak to 43 weeks.
Choosing a single "Game of the Week" is difficult due to several close finishes, but #7 Villanova's 2-overtime victory over Syracuse probably takes the cake. The Orange got up by 15 in the first half, but the Wildcats forced overtime and scored 13 in the 5-minute extra period to win 82-77. Of the rest, Illinois was the only other team with late-game heroics, hitting a 3-pointer with one second left to down Missouri 62-59. Of the 2-point victories, Washington blew an early 20-point lead but held on to beat Oklahoma; BYU let a late 13-point lead bleed away to Stanford but they held on; and New Mexico State hit 3-pointer with a second left to lessen their margin of defeat to only 2 rather than 5 to New Mexico.
But the performance of the day was #1 Kentucky, as they started their game against UCLA with a 24-0 run, and ended the first half up 41-7. While the second half was much closer (even though UK still won it 42-37), the game was already over. This sets up the rivalry and rematch of last year's Sweet 16 game between #1 Kentucky and #4 Louisville next week!

Half the field earned HoFs, and among them were 4 of the top 5 and the very last tipper. ozzz2002's HoF leaves only dg_dave and wwe84 without weekly wins. Meanwhile, gtho4's win and bonus point sees his lead climb to 5 points over the field.
The game of the week was ultimately no surprise, as #1 Kentucky wins yet again, this time over rival #4 Louisville 58-50 in their first true road game. In what was the closest game of the week for our purposes was Illinois going down to Michigan in overtime 73-65, prompting two solo picks by gtho4 and Sypher.
Ohio State started off the week well, crushing Wright State 100-55, but had a huge letdown at home to Iowa just a couple days later 71-65 at home. That game gave ozzz2002 a solo bonus and into a tie for 9th place.

N-Bomb owns the week and picks up the first near perfect bonus for anyone since week 4. It could've gone much differently, as wwe84 set himself up for 5 solo bonuses (and got one), but instead picks up the spoon this week, missing all of them. gtho4 still keeps his lead, but it dwindles from 5 to 3.
Virginia kept up their perfect ways, taking down Miami in double overtime 89-80. The big upset of the week was previously 5-9 Fresno State beat 11-3 San Diego State 59-57 at home.

What a difference one week makes! With a win from N-Bomb and a spoon for gtho4 means that a 3-point lead switched from the latter to the former. There is now a clear top 3 as Howie72 now has a 4-point gap over the rest of the field.
This week was filled with upset picks, as 7 solo bonuses were handed out. Kansas State took down Oklahoma in overtime on the road, earning 2 solo bonuses. Oklahoma State held serve at home over Texas, making 2 as well. dg_dave got the only solo solo bonus, picking Clemson over Pittsburgh. And finally, NC State's upset over Duke was picked by two as well.

With Howie72's win and dg_dave's spoon this week, the field has split into 3 distinct groups. Barring some major comebacks, it appears the podium will be made of N-Bomb, gtho4, and Howie72, as the next pack of 3 sits 8 points back, and the last group of 4 is 12 points behind them.

N-Bomb retains his lead, but it dwindles since the first team he earned it 3 weeks ago, now down to 2. gtho4 drops below 2nd for the first time this year, and George95 picks up a weekly win to extend his spoonless streak to 48 weeks. The back end of the table took a host of chances to get back into the mix, but most misfired and three of the bottom four picked up spoons, while the other went default and got the score anyway.
Surprisingly, Kansas earned an upset pick for George95 and Sypher with their road victory over Texas. wwe84 and dg_dave did pick up solo picks for the Nebraska upset over Michigan State. Four games went to overtime, providing excellent free basketball, although the favored team won in all four games.

A quick writeup as we try to catchup a little bit. Howie72 had been stalking the leaders for some time, and with a win this week takes it over himself. A Northern Iowa upset over Wichita State at home also helped his cause. All told, 6 solo picks littered the field this week. George95 continues his spoonless streak and makes up plenty of ground on the top 3, putting himself in position to perhaps get on the podium.

Howie72 continues his rocket climb as he reaches the largest lead anyone has seen in this comp all year. Back-to-back weekly wins propel him above the next 3, who all came in with 8 on the week. Those 4 remain the clear favorites for the podium spots.
Only a few solo picks this week, 2 of them coming from some Midwestern team beating Michigan State on the road... oh it was Illinois. I applaud ozzz2002 and dg_dave for having the faith I did not hold myself. wwe84 meanwhile was the only one of us to predict an Oklahoma State victory over Kansas in the highly-competitive Big 12.

After Howie72 grabbed a 6-point lead, N-Bomb decided he wanted his lead back. After a weekly win, he's back within 4 points of the lead. Sypher and dg_dave pick up spoons, as the former slips down to 10 points out of third place.
While N-Bomb got 11 points the usual way, ozzz2002 did it quite an unusual way, tagging 3 solo picks. He was the only one to take NC State over Louisville and Pittsburgh over North Carolina. He also joined dg_dave in taking St. John's over Xavier.

Howie72 extends his lead back out to 6 with a weekly win, and George95 does so as well in order to leap into 3rd place and keep his spoonless streak alive. wwe84 meanwhile followed his rise to 7th place with a spoon, and a dip back down to 9th place.
Everybody took Wisconsin and Connecticut at home, while 9/10 got St. John's and Gonzaga correct as well. George95 notched a bonus with West Virginia on the road, while Sypher and BxBarracuda both picked a convincing Oregon win at home.

Howie72 picks up yet another weekly win, and his lead in the penultimate week grows to 7, the largest lead of anyone at any time this year. He seems to have the win well in hand for this year barring an epic collapse. N-Bomb holds a 3-point lead for 2nd place over George95, who also has a 3-point lead over gtho4 for 3rd place. With some bold picks, any of those 3 could end up in a different spot on the podium (or off) for the final.
A light week as only 8 tippers showed up, leading to 4 winners being picked by everyone (Wichita State, Baylor, Kansas, and Duke) and 2 winners being picked by no one (Dayton and BYU).
