I am (thankfully) nowhere near these goings-on but I and my coworker have friends and family who work nearby.
Reports say that one shooter has been shot (dead) by police and a second shooter has reportedly just been shot as well.

I picked a decent day to catch the cold/cough thats been going around my office and stayed home sick today Thank goodness GG; I was worried for you. After conflicting reports, it seems to have been confirmed now by the Ottawa Police that the soldier who was shot outside the War Memorial as died as a result of his injuries. I believe it was said he was from Hamilton. I am so sorry for his family.

Here is more on that subject: "Parliament Hill was attacked Wednesday after a man with a rifle shot a soldier standing guard at the memorial in downtown Ottawa before seizing a car and driving to the doors of Parliament Hill's Centre Block nearby. MPs and other witnesses reported several shots fired inside Parliament, and a gunman has been confirmed dead inside the building. Police sources said there is more than one suspect, and shots have been reported at other locations surrounding Parliament Hill as the downtown area remains under police lockdown. It was not immediately known if there are further injuries, but paramedics were seen carrying a stretcher into the Chateau Laurier Hotel, just east of Parliament Hill. There were reports of shots fired there as well." http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/n...milton-1.280896

Apparently the Hazeldean Mall in Kanata (like 5 minutes from my home) also went into lockdown today due to a man with a rifle. What is happening in this city!

I live in Hamilton, Ontario where the soldier is from. He was well liked by everyone and I have heard nothing but praise from everyone that knew him. This is so sad for our city and our Country. The Mayor of Hamilton visited his mother yesterday and she is now in Ottawa. My niece lives in downtown Ottawa and my sister also lives in Ottawa and they are still in shock. I also lived in Ottawa for 20 years and went to High School there. My thoughts and prayers to everyone in Ottawa and all of Canada after these sad events.

*Inmigration and Refugee Board, not Immigration Canada (Montreal Gazette's error, not yours Emma!)
Just clarifying as I was momentarily confused as I work for Citizenship and Immigration and had never heard of her or her role.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Downtown Hamilton last night as Corporal Cirillo was brought home to Hamilton. Here is the article from my morning newspaper. Those of you in the Hamilton area can sign a book of Remembrance at Hamilton City Hall. http://www.thespec.com/news-story/494228...es-in-hamilton/

I cried when I saw the article about his dogs waiting for him. I'm so sad for Canada that this happened. I really admire the way you go about your business and your country's government.
Edited to add: I looked it up and the young man's mother is going to look after the two dogs and his young son.

Actually, Canada isn't nirvana when it comes to crime. Here are but a FEW (major) incidents:
October 1970 - the "FLQ Crisis". 2 kidnappings of government officials. Trudeau and Michener enacted the only peace time use of the War Measures Act. Various police units arrested (without bail) almost 500 people, all but 62 of whom were later released. Debate about the "excessiveness" of the invocation went on for more than a decade and was a vehicle for the Parti Quebecois (who advocate separatism) to eventually gain seats in the House
December 1989 - Ecole Polytechnique Massacre in Montreal. Marc Lepine shot 28 people he deemed were "feminists" before killing himself. "Interestingly", four of the folks he shot were men (students and/or faculty, not police officers). There is still a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women due to this event.
March 2005 - James Roszko shoots and kills 4 RCMP officers near Mayerthorpe Alberta. He committed suicide at the scene. The Queen actually attended the ceremony for the "fallen 4" .
June 2014 - Justin Borque shoots five RCMP officers, killing three, in Moncton New Brunswick. Given 75 years sentence.
There are lots more, but I don't want to bore you folks lol
Strangely enough, Ontario (despite its high population) had the lowest violent crime rate as of 2012 (followed by Quebec, an equally high pop. province). Manitoba (specifically Winnipeg - who some say is the murder capital of our country) and Saskatchewan (specifically Regina) were the worst overall at that time.

two more rcmp gunned down in St Albert Alberta yesterday, one not expected to live. I think it's time we brought back immediate execution for the attempt to kill police officers (yes, I'm fully aware the bleeding hearts in the crowd will not agree with me), never mind life imprisonment that includes 3 squares a day, university education so they can become lawyers in order to file hundreds of appeals, with approx 1 million dollars in taxpayers expense if the culprit if young, blah blah. Where's the "punishment" in that?
And moreover, where is the "incentive" NOT to do such a thing.
I haven't the slightest idea why anyone (particularly anyone with a family) would EVER choose law enforcement as a career. And they're not really that well paid either, which is, in itself, a shame on all of us

As a New Yorker I certainly sympathize with our Canadien friends as we just buried 2 officers last month. It seems nowhere is safe from gun violence
