The FA Cup, which started in 1872, is the world's oldest football knock-out competition .. season 2015 is the 134th edition. The preliminary qualifying rounds started in mid-August. The Football Association has accepted entries from 736 teams for this season's FA Cup, comprising 644 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The league teams are the 44 teams in the FAPL (20) and
FLC (24), and the 48 teams in League One and League Two (24 each).- the 4th and last qualifying round for the 644 non-league teams
will be played on Saturday 25th October.
- the 32 survivors from the qualifiers join the 48 teams in L1 and
L2 in the First Round (equals 80 teams). - the 20 survivors from the Second Round will join the FAPL and
FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams). - from there it's a straight knock-out through to the final in May.
This year's FA Cup tipping comp will run for almost 8 months over 10 rounds from Saturday 8th November 2014 until Saturday 30th May 2015 (FA Cup First Round through to the FA Cup Final). Although there are 10 rounds in the tipping comp we only lodge picks on 8 occasions:- the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds
of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
- the Second Round has 20 games .. 4 games are ignored.
- the Third Round of 32 games is be split into two rounds
of 16 games each.
- that's 5 tipping rounds which, with the remaining 5 rounds
of the FA Cup, gives us 10 tipping rounds.
- we also have advance picks so that each round is always
worth 16 pts.

Gone are the good old days where the FA Cup Final was played on the first or second Saturday in May (and the regular season games finished the week before). It'll be almost June when this year's final is played, on 30th May 2015! At least the Third Round is set in concrete, it's always the first Saturday in January. The dates for each round in this year's comp are as follows: 1st Round : Saturday 8 November 2014
2nd Round : Saturday 6 December 2014
3rd Round : Saturday 3 January 2015
4th Round : Saturday 24 January 2015
5th Round : Saturday 14 February 2015
6th Round : Saturday 7 March 2015 quarters
7th Round : Saturday 18 April 2015 semi-finals
8th Round : Saturday 30 May 2015 FA Cup Final The rules for the FA Cup tipping comp are simple (they're the same as last year): points

perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick .. home win, draw, away win
in other words, it's always at 90 minutes.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts);
but if the wooden spoon score is higher, default is the ws score; default for
the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
you score a bonus point if you pick a game solo .. or one of two players if we
have 10+ runners; or one of three if 18 or more runners.
one bonus point for 11+/16;
14/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from HM).
no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win;
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus pts will be used. |

Last year's FA Cup comp had a field of 17 runners. This year we had 16 runners line-up at the barriers to participate .. the no show was KrivoyRog, the defending titleholder. There are no rookies this year.
The first round of this year's comp had just two games picked by everyone, for a 50/50 split .. one was 100% wrong and all of us got one 100% right.
Seven players picked 10+/16 for a bonus point, and one of them is our are early season leader, dg_dave. With two solo picks as well, he's skipped away to a 3 point margin. The next six players are separated by one point.
Round 1b will be completed when the two postponed games are played: Mansfield Town v Concord Rangers and Weston Super Mare v Doncaster Rovers. The FA has not selected a date for these two games, as yet.

With rescheduling for tv rights and two postponed games, this round has finally ended. It dragged on across 11 days from Sat 8th to Tue 18th Nov.
dg_dave retains 1st spot despite collecting a wooden spoon (and with that effort is the first to fill-in the last three columns in the standings) .. ozzz2002 scores a weekly win and jumps up into a share of the lead. LeoDaVinci scored the other weekly win .. he flew up the table from 4th last and landed on a podium position.
A single point covers the first six players .. and a mere three pts covers the first ten (which is over half the field).
Unlike dg_dave, the other wooden spooners all tumbled down the table. Dizart collected back-to-back spoons.
The next round will be played over the 1st weekend next month. The draw is not ready for tippng as yet, as there are still three outstanding replays from the First Round. It should be finalised later this week when two of those three are played.
Note - to avoid having a round drag on and on and on for almost a fortnight, we will lodge picks for all games played in the next round, but will end up scoring the first 16 played. Details will be posted in the tipping thread : FA Cup - 2nd Round - Sat 6 Dec.

ozzz2002 failed to lodge picks, receives default, and drops from 1st to 5th.
dg_dave has been in the lead since day dot and is still there. This time he's joined by one of this round's winners, srini701. The other winner, wwe84, jumps up from 2nd last to 10th, a new personal high (ditto srini701). FussBudget also achieved a new personal high.
Sypher collects the wooden spoon and drops to 2nd last (new personal low) .. ditto N-Bomb and PaulE.
The first four are now separated by 4 pts (previously 1 pt), and form there there's a 2 pt gap to the next *eight* players, who are separated by just one point.
The draw for the 3rd Round (first Saturday in January) will take place later today.

The loss at home by QPR, to a team from League One, was only the 14th time in the 143-year history of the FA Cup that a team in the top tier of English football lost at home to a team from either of the bottom two divisions of The Football League (see below). Four of the top six in the FA Premier League are out, one was held to a draw (Manchester Utd), and just one of them won (Arsenal). The four that are out all lost at home: Chelsea, Manchester City, Southampton and Tottenham Hotpsur. When was the last time all four failed to make the 5th Round? It was 40 years ago, in 1975.
