3rd leg of FT Triple Crown

154th Melbourne Cup

This year's race is almost here. The scoring system for the Melbourne Cup comp is the same as the Grand National and Kentucky Derby compc earlier this month:

RULES
o The rules for this comp are simple, and are the same as last year and the year before.
o Pick 10 horses in the order you think they'll finish, 1st to 10th.
o Points: for any horse out of the 10 you've picked, which finishes in the first five places:
      1st : 10 pts
      2nd : 6 pts
      3rd : 3 pts
      4th : 2 pts
      5th : 1 pt
o The order of your picks will be used as a tiebreaker to separate any dead-heats or ties.
o If two players have identical picks x10, whoever posts first wins the tie-breaker.
DEADLINE
The race starts on Tuesday 4th November 2014 at 3:00pm. Tips close when they
jump. There is a count-down clock to the race start time in post below this one.
The following few pages (of many out there) have details of the contenders and their form:At the moment there are 72 horses still in the running to qualify, after first acceptances.
The field of 24 runners and their post positions (barrier draw) will be announced three
days before the race at around 6:00pm on Sat 1st Nov.
Picks x10 can be posted at any time in this thread, even if the field of 24 hasn't been announced! Please note that there is no need to pick reserves. If your horse is scratched, so be it (we've got half the field covered with our 10 picks). However, as is the case with any tipping comp in here, you are free to edit your picks at any time before the deadline.
N-Bomb is the defending titleholder and 22crows is attempting the impossible. No-one has
won the FT Triple Crown over the previous 12 years (it was first run in 2003) .. 22 crows won
the Grand National and Kentucky Derby earlier this year. The two near misses in prior years
were szabs in 2009 and George95 in 2012. They both won two legs .. and they both missed
the Grand National.

The 2014 Melbourne Cup has been run and won. The German horse, Protectionist, won confortably, paying 8/1. Red Cadeaux came second (again- he finished in the same position last year), and local hope Who Shot The Barman was third. The next two home were Signoff and Willing Foe. Unfortunately, two horses died after the race, including the favourite and Caulfield Cup winner Admire Ratki.

Our comp had 12 runners. Eight of those runners managed to get four placings out of five, but only one was able to pick the lot. Congratulations to this years winner- Howie!

Countbacks were required to separate most positions, with four people getting the first four spots.

Not really, but it is a long race- 3200m/2 miles. Admire Ratki died in the stall after the race, apparently of heart failure. Araldo had to be put down after shattering his leg, also after the race. He was spooked by the crowd and kicked a heavy fence.
