I was sitting watching television at 8.30 this morning when I sensed that I was being watched, I looked at the window and through the slats in the blinds I could see a cow looking at me! Fine if you live on a farm but I live on a housing estate. smile I grabbed my camera and went out to take some photos. This is the garden of a neighbour, the cows were eating various plants including stripping parts of a palm tree.

Now that's unique, Sue!!!

Heppened to me once, but I was living in the countryside at the time. Hubby was practicing bagpipes in the bedroom and I opened the kitchen window to let out the steam from the dinner which was cooking. Next thing I knew a big, friendly, black-and-white cow's face was peeping in curiously! Not the sort of thing you expect in your nicely-groomed garden, eh?

I have always heard that cows like the sound of bagpipes, and have to agree as I've seen it happen on several occasions. OK, not in the window, but a field of cows will migrate towards the sound of a piper or pipe band, if there's one playing nearby.

Hope yours didn't do too much damage and that their owner was able to round them up quickly!

Yes the farmer came when someone phoned, he had a bag of cattle feed nuts and just called out and one immediately came to him and the other two followed. He said that they have never strayed so far before and that the battery pack for the electric fence had been knocked over and disconnected which is how they got out.

Years ago when I was still married, one morning I looked out of the window and saw a herd of cows in our garden eating our vegetables. smile They had also walked quite a way to get to our house, about half a mile or so.

LOL, I can't let that pass without comment, really I can't. For the sake of the uninitiated that's the car/taxi route under the new St Pancras station, one of London's Victorian mainline stations which has been redeveloped. It's now the station where Eurostar goes from and is absolutely stunning.

Thanks flopsy, I'd never seen it before and had to look it up when I got home as they were originally going to replace the entire building, and didn't realise they'd added behind it instead.

When we inherited my late grandma's house, which backs onto woodlands, I found a deer in the back garden once, considering it was surrounded by a six foot fence was quite an achievement. When I went back with the camera it had already gone. I had no idea they could jump that far but now know.

Here is more new development around the area, this is on Caledonian Road

When the Hungarians moved some of the old Communist-era statues to their new home at Memento Park, they put them on bases that are quite low to the ground - whereas they would previously have been mounted on plinths which kept them way out of reach. I assume that part of this was a device to stop the Hungarians, not known to love their Communist rulers, from indulging in graffiti but it was also intended to dominate and intimidate. You can see how that might work with this statue dedicated to the Republic of Councils (which I think involved the organisations that represented workers). Nowadays it's on a plinth which at its highest is about 1.5 metres high and it still looms way over the heads of any humans - imagine what it was like when it was raised even higher.

(Though perhaps the French think that about Nelson on his column!)

Looking the other way along the Rhine River from Lorelie Rock in Germany. Superb being a passenger in the car travelling through the Rhine Valley. I remember the day well, it was the day little New Zealand drew 1-1 with Italy in the football World Cup. I had to rely in translationd from my friend as I could not understand what was being said on the radio, I thought she was tricking me...lol

While I have your scared attention... this was one of the monuments which I found most scary, a monument to the Workers' Militia. There's something about the flat, almost non-existent, faces which seems designed to make you think they're going to keep coming no matter what. It reminded me of a time, many years ago, when I had to deal with someone who had paranoid schizophrenia; one of his fixations involved the place where I worked and he would sometimes bring us his paintings. They were very large, all of people but all of the faces were completely blank - there was just a space where the facial features should have been. I've never seen anything so spooky in my life and this Hungarian wall plaque has some of the same feeling.

Perhaps I'll be more cheery tomorrow! grin

I am totally in agreement with your vision of that plaque, flopsy! Those guys look all the more relentless or unmerciful for the lack of human expression on those blank faces.

Still on the way to Cathedral Cove on the Coromandel Peninsula but looking in the opposite direction to Mercury Bay. A little bit of farmland and forest.

On 23rd October 1956, an angry crowd in Budapest tore down a statue of Stalin and began the Hungarian Uprising of 1956. The statue, 25 metres tall, was highly symbolic and when it was demolished the crowd left only the boots in which they placed an Hungarian flag.

The original boots were removed after the Uprising was crushed but the boots are not forgotten - an artistic copy has been erected at the entrance to Memento Park and here they are, not a memorial to Stalin but a memory of the night he was reduced to a pair of boots.

My local team - Bristol City - are making improvements to their stadium which began with the
demolition of one of the older stands. This is the beginning of the replacement stand:

Learning to sail by the Yacht Club at Caroline Bay, Timaru. In the background are a lot of logs ready for export.

These days Budapest is full of smart new Volvos, Audis, Mercedes, all the shiny motors of Europe - and Japan, and South Korea, just like any other European city. But there was a time when a well-off Hungarian would order a new car, hand over a deposit, then wait six whole years to get one of these. Yep, it's a Trabi!

Wraysbury village, which was moved from Buckinghamshire to Berkshire in 1975, although no buildings were damaged in the process.
