I must say that I'm surprised that no-one has proferred an opinion on this event...

Je suis Charlie.

I can't think of anything else to say.

Perhaps that's because there is just so much to say -- so much! -- and it is still so raw that we are still in a state of mourning and reflection.

Want to kick us off, sisterseagull?

Someone asked me in passing, "What is Jesus Charlie anyway?" I said (too much in a rush to correct her misunderstanding of Je suis) "...er..unity in freedom" and as I rushed on she was saying "so who is this Charlie person then?"

Je suis Charlie.

It says enough.

There are no other words. Je suis Charlie is all there is.

Agreed. It is all too monstrous to dignify with discussion at the moment.

Charlie Hebdo means Weekly Charlie and it is a satirical, anti-fascist French publication which took its name from Charlie Brown, the main character in Peanuts. I started reading it as a teenager for my French classes and Jean-Marc Reiser (he died very young, in 1983) and Georges Wolinski (killed at the January 7th shootings) became my favorite cartoonists. The offices of Charlie Hebdo were attacked by Islamists, for the first time, in 2011.
I am deeply, deeply saddened, Je suis Charlie.
