Of the above, I have only watched 3: The Imitation Game The Grand Budapest Hotel Whiplash They are all worth watching. I don't think "Whiplash" should be up for Best Picture, though. I presume there is some ongoing attempt to broaden the category by throwing in a few underfunded or under-the-radar, from left field, projects -- and I sincerely applaud that worthy aim -- but it is just nonsense to even try to compare the huge photogenic delight of Grand BH, or the moving and important tale told in The Imitation G, with a film (Whip L) that is more excellent-end-of-term-production than film-of-the-year-must-see. Whiplash reminded me of "Fame" meets "Full Metal Jacket", with a soundtrack by Easy Music Inc. Harsh of me, maybe! I enjoyed it, and it was different and, by Jiminy, everyone gave their all, but...you know...it was a little bit Drama Workshoppy here and there. The Grand BH is a must see for the pictures - each scene exquisitely presented, like a treasure of a book of moving photos. The narrative or plot seemed like an afterthought but so what. It deserves an Oscar for pure beauty. The Imitation Game wasn't perfect, but I found it moving, and can only put that down to the storytelling skill of the cast & crew as I already knew the story -- by the end of the film felt I had been on the journey with them, and heard the story for the first time. I think it's a strong contender for an award, but I haven't seen 'The Theory of E' yet and I suspect it is the main rival. I am going to try to see a few more from the list - Birdman and Sniper are next in the queue, I think, then the Hawking one. I might not manage the rest before Feb 22.

I've seen 5 of the movies suggested for best picture.
My guesses?
Boyhood will probably win for best picture and/or director. Not because it's necessarily the best film in the group, but because no one has ever filmed something over 12 years or whatever the time was that it took to watch the kid grow up.
Grand Budapest was a good period piece. Maybe too good, as I thought it tried way too hard to BE one (mind you am sure the critics loved the thing to death since there have been hardly any very good flicks of this genre in several years). It's supposed to be a comedy, but I didn't find it all that funny. Amusing, perhaps bemusing, but not funny. And I've seen it twice, so I can't blame it on the "mood of the day". That is NOT to say that it isn't a worthwhile watch (it is) but rather I sort of wonder about the categories certain movies get slotted into lol. Excellent performance from Mr. Fiennes , sort of surprised he didn't get nominated since he more or less carried the whole thing.
Best actor will probably go to Eddie. Oscar has a fondness for awarding performances of characters that have something wrong, mentally or physically, with them. Or even over the top physical changes (like Bale in American Psycho, de Niro in Raging Bull, Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot etc). Eddie is too good looking to be Hawkings (even before he succumbed to his illness), but hey, Charlize Theron played a much less good looking serial killer too lol.
If they give best supporting actress to Meryl, I might have to scream "fix". i know the film world loves her (so do I), but she's not oscar worthy is EVERY performance - and certainly not in this particular movie (not even meryl could save ThiS one lol).
I can't see any song winning other than Glory from Selma, but then I haven't seen them ALL (yet).. waiting for them to show up on sat tv
Can anyone tell me why Steve Carell was nominated at all? sheesh
I'm hoping Birdman wins SOMEthing. I'm a weird quirky sort of person who likes dark movies, even more so with some humour involved, so this one struck a nerve or two.
Anyway, the Oscars have a different judging system (and types of judges) than any of the other award shows so anything can happen lol.

They all seem like very fair points, Jake. I know nothing about the songs so I just had a quick Google and listened to just one of them - the Glen Campbell one - and I'll tip that for a win because (as you say) the Oscar judges work to their own mysterious beat, and ever since Judi Dench won that Oscar for "Shakespeare in Love" we know (as we always suspected) that they aren't always given for purely rational reasons. If I was judging, I'd find it hard not to vote for Campbell. I watched "Birdman" and loved it, and I also hope it wins something. Originality Oscar maybe? For some time now, in my own little world, Edward Norton has become a byword for "watch this film". He should get an Oscar for being Edward Norton.

I am not over my disappointment about the non-inclusion of 'The Lego Movie'.

Up: I'm a complete sucker for animated movies. But the husband who only likes movies where things blow up or crash won't take me to any. So I have to wait til they're on tv. The Lego Movie SOUNDS like it should have made the list though.

I watched "American Sniper". I should admit a bias : I knew it wouldn't be my cup of tea, and it wasn't. So it is not my personal pick for the win. As it is such a new film I'll leave my comments in a spoiler box. In my opinion, it was made for the Fox News audience, and now we know that there are a lot of Fox News viewers on the voting panel. People who play lots of war based video games might also like it. I'm neither of those so I found myself getting pretty bored/irritated/cross. It is not without merit, Bradley is a big merit, but I will be disappointed if it wins Best Picture. I preferred "Lone Survivor", which is a very similar film, but only got small recognition from the Oscars (sound editing).
Eastwood allegedly claims it is an anti-war film. Well, if you say so!

I wouldn't be at all upset if "The Grand Budapest Hotel" won both for Best Picture and Best Director. It's way past time that Wes Anderson started to get the mainstream recognition that he deserves. His unique visual style, combined with a quirky, deadpan humour make his films something to treasure. Eddie Redmayne will hopefully repeat his well deserved success at the Golden Globes, and I'll be very upset if Julianne Moore doesn't win Best Actress For her heartbreaking performance in "Still Alice", for me one of the high points of a year's watching.

Thanks JRoo. That's something, I guess. There are so many awards, aren't there.
