This is part of Cologne/Koln Cathedral, no matter where I positioned myself I could not get it all in one photo with the camera I had (not that I tried from everywhere....lol). It may have something to do with it being 144.5m long, 86.5m wide and the towers being 157m tall. Construction began in 1248 but was halted in 1473 to be resumed in 1843 and completed in 1880. It was hit by bombs during WWII but one story as to why it was not demolished was the tall spires were easily recognisable by the allied bomber crews.

The tall towers at the front of Koln/Cologne Cathedral. I entered through the large doors at the front centre where the blue & purple/red sign is to give a scale of the size.

The lake near our house fills up only every ten years or so ... I guess this abandoned the last time it was at this level. smile

Another view of the drought in this area of the country though there are showers forecast for tomorrow. The road you see in the middle of the photo is where I almost got knocked off my bicycle by a pukeko attempting to fly across the road many years ago....lol

More train related material today, I've gone back to my photographic roots this week. This is in Colindale.

A pukeko for Copago smile

A member of the rail family and also known as a swamphen. Reluctant and not very good flyers hence almost getting knocked off my bicycle as one attempted to fly across the road in front of me.....but good runners, waders and swimmers. Also the winner of the Forest & Bird's 2011 Bird of the Year competition.

The pukeko looks a bit like a dusky moorhen, a fairly common water bird n Australia,

Aye, they are from the same family and the pukeko is thought to have arrived (escaped from) Australia about 1000 years ago - May have hitched a ride when Ozzz came here for a holiday back then smile. Quite common here to, can see them in paddocks etc when driving along, especially in the North Island and seem to have no road sense at all.

My other photo project is for the Ordnance Survey map which basically takes photos of what is there for historic records. I was doing some of this yesterday and the BP station at Southgate was one of the least boring, besides a few being out of focus as it was getting dark and needed a tripod.

I was thinking the pukeko looked like a bird we have here but I just call it a waterhen. Same family at least I'd reckon.

Doing some sheep work.
