Super RugbyThis year's Super XV rugby comp starts February 13 and will go on till early July. The rules are simple: points
default
draws
upsets
perfect picks
draw bonus
dead-heats
deadline | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours; but if the wooden
spoon score is more, it's the spoon score.
for those brave souls amongst us, you can pick a draw (good luck).
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point (or one of two tipsters).
of 7/7 scores a bonus point; ditto for 6/6 when there's a bye.
no-one picks a draw, bonus point for the minority who picked the upset
win (same as FLC comp).
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if
they're identical, bonus pts will be used.
is always Thursday midnight FT time, with a period of grace through to
kick-off in the first game which is, sometimes, just 35 minutes later. If
you lodge your picks late you score zero for any game that's started. |
This is the 14th edition of the Super XV tipping comp.. Last season's competition was won by George95, with paper_aero and BxBarracuda following him. Sypher (2013), Howie72 (2012) and N-Bomb (2011) were the other winners of this competition in recent times. No winless or spoonless streaks going, so we can all gun for a few records beginning this year  All trivia tipping comp junkies, and anyone else who follows the game they play in heaven (according to gtho4), please sign in!

Welcome to the 2015 Super XV rugby union competition! This is the 14th running of this comp, and my 4th year of hosting a sport of which I know absolutely nothing of  So if the match reports are not up to your liking, please forgive me and move on  12 of us lined up again....11 "usual suspects" with PaulE replacing Davjack on the starting blocks.
Starting a comp on Friday the 13th in hindsight may not have been a good idea as we hit one of our lowest ever scores ... ONLY 1 home team won on the opening weekend! Defending champions NSW Waratahs went down to the Western Force. The Force were winning the opening match of the season for the first time in their ten-year history 
The Northern Transvaal Bulls were last beaten at home in the 2013 semi-finals. They went unbeaten last season in 8 matches, with a 34-all draw being their worst result! Yet, they were shocked as well, with the Western Province Stormers ending a two match losing streak in Pretoria!
The Cheetahs outscored the Sharks to secure their first opening round victory since 2007. Melbourne Rebels won for the first time away from home, upsetting the fancied Crusaders, the Waikato Chiefs got the better of the Blues as usual, and that left the ACT Brumbies as the ONLY team to win at home in the opening round.
Three matches were picked by none here, leaving a poor HoF score of 3/7. Two of us took the opening spoons, but importantly, neither of them scored a duck

We welcome back the "now on, now off" Davjack to our comp. He started with a bang too, picking all games for the round and flying into the lead! Have to see how many rounds he will lodge his picks and how many he will skip
The Wellington Hurricanes had their best start to the Super Rugby season since 2010, by winning both their opening matches. This week they beat the Bulls at the latter's home ground for the first time since 2008, and leave South Africa with two wins from two matches which they have not done since 2006 when they reached the Super Rugby final.
The Crusaders won for the sixth straight time against the Highlanders, the Reds upset the Force, who had shocked the Waratahs last week, the Waratahs themselves bounced back to win this round, and the Stormers and Sharks also won as well.
BxBarracuda picks up his first spoon and slips to the bottom.

The Waikato Chiefs issued a warning to the rest of the league with a thumping win over the Crusaders to stay unbeaten, the Bulls earned their first win for the season beating the Sharks at home, the Brumbies managed to stay atop the Australian Super Rugby Conference beating the Rebels, the Stormers survived a scare when they came from behind to beat the Lions to also stay unbeaten after three rounds and the Blues made their worst ever start in the 19-year history of the competition losing for the 3rd straight time!
Four of us managed perfect rounds this week and that sees N-Bomb move to the top of the ladder. After just 3 week in the season, srini701 has already filled all 3 columns to the right, and as a team we have already had one of the 5 worst and 5 best weeks ever

The Western Province Stormers remained the only unbeaten team after 4 rounds in the season (Wellington Hurricanes had a bye and are unbeaten in 3) after Waikato Chiefs were shocked at home by Otago Highlanders....and so after 21 matches we have our first "sole pick" bonus point winner (trust ozzz2002 to do it!)
The Auckland Blues continued to lose, this time at home, but there were wins over the weekend for the other "big" teams NSW Waratahs, N Transvaal Bulls and the ACT Brumbies.
Ozzz2002 jumped a few spots up the ladder with his first HoF, Davjack has started his hide and seek with the comp again (luckily for him more away teams won this round than the spoon score), and Howie and illiniman take the round's spoons.

The Chiefs ended the unbeaten run of the Stormers for the season, the Sharks earned their second victory of the season beating the Cheetahs, the Brumbies added more pain for the struggling Reds, the Highlanders scored a bonus point victory over champions Waratahs (Highlanders have beaten the two most recent Super Rugby champions in the space of eight days as they beat the Chiefs last week).
ozzz2002 made it back-to-back HoFs for himself and with a sole pick bonus point, moved to the top of the ladder. There were bonus points for PaulE, Davjack and Howie72 as well. srini701, BxBarracuda and N-Bomb take the week's spoons (first spoon for N-Bomb who drops off the top spot with that).

The Hurricanes remained the only unbeaten team in Super Rugby this season upsetting the Highlanders. This is their best ever start to a Super Rugby season! Defending champions Waratahs earned their first home victory of the 2015 season beating the Brumbies. The Waratahs have now won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Brumbies in Sydney. The Bulls earned their third straight victory beating the Western Force, the Crusaders romped to a bonus point victory over the Cheetahs, a 13-member Sharks team beat a Chiefs team with 14 players and ended a five match losing streak to the Kiwi side.
There were 3 bonus points awarded this week, as illiniman14 kept faith in the Sharks side, and only BxBarracuda and our leader ozzz2002 picked the Lions to win on road against the Rebels. ozzz2002 keeps his lead at the top and there are first spoons to wwe84 and Davjack.

The Waratahs earned their fourth victory of the season beating the Blues, who are now winless in 8 matches in a row! The Chiefs recovered from last week's loss to beat the Cheetahs with a bonus point, the Lions beat the Reds for their first victory in Brisbane since 2009. The result means that the Lions have won three out of their four matches on tour, which is their best ever result from a tour in Australasia. Elsewhere the Highlanders ended a six match losing streak to the Stormers and the Bulls scored their fourth straight win of the season.
srini701 had a perfect week to jump all the way from 8th spot to 3rd in the table, while Sypher took home his first spoon for the season.

After a rather indifferent start, teams have begun to win more at Home. The Lions won for the third straight time at home, the Rebels won for the first time (albeit against the Reds, who just can't seem to win anything these days), the Brumbies, Hurricanes and the Chiefs all won at home too while the Crusaders were the only team to win on road this week, smashing the Sharks to sound a real warning to the rest of the competition.
We had our fourth "perfect" round in 8 weeks here, with Howie72 notching that impressive score to jump up the ladder. wwe84 took home another spoon to drop further down the list. Davjack returned to action (with a "trivia" to boot: Click here ), but will somebody sound out a search party for BxBarracuda? He's missing since two weeks now

South Africa comprehensively beat Australia over the weekend in the Super Rugby comp. The Bulls beat the Reds (at home), the Stormers beat the Waratahs and the Cheetahs beat the Western Force (both away). In other matches, the Lions stretched their winning streak to four by beating the Sharks, the Highlanders ended a six match losing streak against the Crusaders and the Blues held on to end a seven match overall losing streak by beating the Brumbies.
As a group, we had our second worst-round ever in the history of this comp (and the third time in 9 rounds we have entered the records for 'best-worst' stats). None of us picked the Stormers to win, and only the Bulls saved a bunch of us from taking home a golden egg
We are fast filling all the columns now with only 6 blanks left there to go...wwe84 jumped up the ladder again, while Davjack must be happy he did not lodge tips! (again  )

ozzz2002 extended his lead at the top to the biggest lead of the season, with a HoF performance and a bunch of us got spoons again, but Davjack must be really happy he did not lodge tips this round too! He scored more as default than the HoF score! Third time this season he's scored more as default than the poor guy lodging tips for a spoon score 
ozzz2002 is yet to land a spoon, George95 and PaulE are yet to get an HoF while gtho4 and Sypher are still looking for their first bonus points... |

It was a rare full house this week, and it was good....we again hit one of the 5 all-time best picks in the comp...same as in week 3!
The Lions stretched their winning run to five consecutive wins this season, and after starting with two victories, the Cheetahs now have crashed to their seventh defeat in eight outings. The Hurricanes moved back to the top of the Super Rugby standings beating the Reds. This is the first time in their history that the Wellington side have gone five matches unbeaten away from home!
The Stormers won their third match in a row against the Bulls, champions Waratahs held on to beat the Melbourne Rebels and the Crusaders got back to winning ways after a two match losing run beating the Blues.
A bunch of us here had a "perfect week" though ozzz2002 is still comfortable ahead, while Davjack and BxBarracuda took home the spoons.
ozzz2002 is yet to land a spoon, PaulE is yet to get an HoF while Sypher is still looking for his first bonus points... |

Another very good round for the home teams. Six of them won, with the Bulls ending the 5-match winning streak of the Lions, the Cheetahs surprising the Stormers, the Blues hammering the hapless Force and the Hurricanes holding off a stiff challenge from the Crusaders.But the shock of the round was the win of the Rebels over the Chiefs, a result only George95 picked here amongst us...
That sole pick bonus point helps George95 jump up the table, even as ozzz2002 continues to chug away merrily at the top. Howie72's faith in the Crusaders lands him the round's spoon, and there's just 2 points separating 7 people after ozzz now.

Another good weekend for the home teams in the Super Rugby as all matches ended with home winners. The Wellington Hurricanes stayed on top of the ladder beating the Natal Sharks (fifth defeat in a row for the Sharks). The Canterbury Crusaders have not missed out on the play-offs since 2001, and they gave themselves some hope of maintaining that record with a bonus point win over the hapless Queensland Reds. The Melbourne Rebels followed last week's win over the Chiefs with a bonus point win over Auckland Blues. It is the first time that the Rebels have won six matches in a season, and they remain with a chance of reaching the play-offs.
The Gauteng Lions also stayed in contention for the play-offs with a come from behind win over the Otago Highlanders. The Western Force beat the defending Champions NSW Waratahs in round one of the season and then lost every match since then. But they managed to get the better of the Waratahs yet again, scoring their third win in a row over the Waratahs. The Western Province Stormers edged out the Brumbies to stay in the race for the play-offs.
paper_aero made it a hat-trick of weekly wins and he now moves into second place. 3 others joined him in the winners' column, including PaulE, completing that column in our table. ozzz2002 is continuing to avoid a spoon, while Sypher is still looking for his first bonus point after picking a spoon this round.

The Canterbury Crusaders won to keep their playoff hopes alive, but there's one Kiwi who is probably NOT happy The last few times Howie72 picked them to win this season, they lost...and when he finally lost hope and picked against them, they scored a bonus point win! What's in store next week?
I liked this line on the superxv website: "The last time a Lions team beat the Waratahs in Super Rugby was in 2001 when they played as the Cats." ... The cats have evolved?
Elsewhere, the Stormers opened up a 7 point lead over their nearest South African conference the Bulls and the Lions with two matches remaining, the Highlanders beat the Chiefs for the second time this season (and qualified for the playoffs) and the Brumbies almost certainly ended the Bulls play off hopes.
Our defending champion here George95 took another impressive stride towards remaining on the podium with a HoF show, while srini701 all but doused his own hopes with a spoon...not impossible, but with just 2 rounds left, it might take a miracle for the players in the 5th position on the ladder to finish among the medals!

The Crusaders will miss the play-offs for the first time since 2001! The Brumbies and Waratahs both got bonus point wins in Round 17 which moved them up to 47 points each. Sixth placed Brumbies will host the Crusaders next weekend in the final round but they are already 6 points ahead of the Christchurch side. The Brumbies vs Crusaders result will probably decide where the two Australian sides finish the regular season. The final round of the regular season will also decide who plays who in the qualification round.

None of us picked the draw in the Stormers-Lions match here, but all who lodged picks went for Stormers. Awarded a point to all for that, but no resultant "perfect pick bonus" to paper and srini (this point in a way helps this round's spooner wwe84, gtho4 and Howie, who would otherwise have got lower or same as the default score....have to change rules for default for next season!)
We have a cracker of a final round coming up with just 1 point separating the top 2 for the gold, and another 3 in the race for the bronze!

The final round of the league phase of the 2015 Super Rugby produced some "predictable" and some "unexpected" results, all of which had a bearing here on our final standings! The Canterbury Crusaders beat the ACT Brumbies (Howie is finally happy ), a result only 2 of us saw coming here, and the already-qualified Stormers preferred to field a second string side against the Sharks, again a result most did not expect here, and these 2 matches had a bearing on our final standings in a big way!
N-Bomb picked both these results and the sole pick bonus for the Crusaders game helped him draw level with George95 on scores. With a better differential, he edges out our defending champion from 2014 for the bronze medal spot.
With a better differential going into the final round, paper_aero also just needed to beat our leader by a single point for the gold medal. It was not to be, paper_aero settles for the silver, but has the consolation of being the only person to retain his podium position from last year.
ozzz2002 was leader for 14 weeks in a row (the last 13 on his own). He also remained the only one without a spoon the whole season and truly deserved his title win...
George95 made a gallant run towards the podium in the final weeks, srini701 slipped out of contention after being near the top for most part, while Howie72 and gtho4 threatened a brief while without ever making a noise...Davjack was present very briefly as has been his wont, while BxBarracuda vanished during the last 4 weeks...If there's anything this season has taught it is that maybe we should revisit our "default" option in scoring (heck, this week's default is better than the HoF score!)
That's it for another season then...the Otago Highlanders host the Waikato Chiefs, while the ACT Brumbies travel to Western Province Stormers for the first round of play-offs. The Wellington Hurricanes and the defending champions NSW Waratahs await the winners in the semis, while the Crusaders with more points than the Stormers, miss out on the final rounds
