From what I've heard reported over the last few days and was alluded to here is that the 'new' book was actually written before "...Mockingbird" and it is essentially the same story just a different name. So, I'd say she was still a one hit wonder. Having read close to three quarters of the book, it is not "essentially the same story just under a different name." It's not a sequel nor should it be looked at as a prequel of sorts. The major themes may be considered close or even the same by some and it's obviously by the same writer, but it is a different story.

I was watching an item regarding this a few days ago. Apparently someone had commented to Harper Lee (I'm not sure of the time frame) about her new book, Go Set a Watchman. Harper Lee is said to have replied, that's not my new book, that's an old one.
I'll be interested to read the 'old one'. Part of me wants to re-read Mockingbird first.

I haven't read the book, though at some point I plan to. I still feel like there is something fishy going on here. We can't ever know for sure because Harper Lee has isolated herself so much from the public that we can't get her word for it. Here is basically my concerns laid out by the Washington Post: Its publication has been highly controversial. Lee is an 89-year-old stroke victim who is nearly deaf and blind, is living in a nursing home, and had long vowed she would never publish anything after “Mockingbird.” Alice Lee, her sister, attorney, business manager and housemate, had shared that point of view.
But then, just two months after Alice died in November, Carter, the only other attorney in the tiny firm in Monroeville, Ala., announced that she had found the “Watchman” manuscript a few months earlier. She said she had never heard of it and rushed it over to Lee, who then reversed her stance against publishing, Carter said, and pronounced herself “happy as hell” to have it published.

It is from July 13. I did read about the Alabama investigation, and that found she was of sound mind, but its details are confidential. I am just concerned that she is being taken advantage of, at the least. Everything seems very convenient. Even with the Alabama investigation, I think we should still be asking questions. Here is the Post article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/...8059_story.html

Fine, sorry I never thought to look in the Book Club thread, don't know why I thought it needed it's own thread. Fine thanks.

In the publicity the day before the release, there was a story about the owner of an airport bookshop here in the US saying he was going to be at the local warehouse to pick the cases of books up. He planned on stocking the shelves all night long to be ready when the store opened at 7am. I got the book! And now I'm on my way to board a 7-hour long flight. This should be interesting...

LLLLppppeeeeezzzzzzzz ..........
Are you out there? Are you having fun some where? What did you think of what you've read so far? Anyone else read the book yet and want to add to where Christinap and I were discussing the book? Hi Mira! I'm about to embark a cruise, so I'll be glad to discuss the book with Christinap and you as soon as I'm back!

I'm jealous Have fun, wear sunscreen, take pictures, write the person's name on the umbrella from the drink in case you have too many umbrella drinks.
