2015
Super League
Tipping Comp

English Rugby League

-------------------------------------

The rules:
  • Pick a winner and score a point.
  • Pick a draw and score a point (draws are very rare).
  • Default is equal to the wooden spoon score.
  • Final placings will be decided on HoF/WS differential and then, if required, total HoF awards.
  • One bonus point for perfect score.
---------------------------------------

PaulE won in 2014 and was chased home by Howie and dg_dave. Can they do it again?

We have missed the first couple of rounds, but our comp will kick off in Round 3, Thursday, February 26. Threads will be up in the next couple of days, so get your name down quickly!

Last year we had a field of 14 runners .. this year we have 12 back for another dose. No shows are dg_dave (last year's bronze medallist) and ozzz2002.

The first round of the SL tipping comp saw all home teams win (there were two upsets, one picked solo byN-Bomb and the other solo by wwe84).

12 players lodged picks, 5 collected a wooden spoon and 4 scored a weekly win. PaulE and Howie72 are mid-table after week one (they won gold and silver last year).

This year's comp has 6 games per round as the Super League has reduced its numbers from 14 teams to 12 teams and introduced promotion and relegation with the division below.

After 23 rounds* the bottom four drop out (to join the top four from the division below in the "promotion/re-
legation" group) and, after a two week break while the SL create the schedule of games, the remaining eight play each other for seven weeks : 7 weeks x 4 games = 28 games remaining. So that we continue to have 6games per round, we will skip one of those 7 weeks and pick four split rounds of 6 games each.

* week 21 of the tipping comp as we missed the first two rounds

  • Huddersfield became the first team to keep the opposition scoreless this season in an error-ridden match. St Helens came from behind to beat Widnes and remain the only team with a 100% record. A Wigan field goal was the difference in their victory over Hull FC. Warrington ended Leeds' unbeaten start to the season with an impressive home win. Salford moved into the top 8 with a victory over Wakefield, consigning their opponents to a third loss in a row. Hull KR scored 40 unanswered second half points to come from behind and record a big win over the visiting Catalans, taking them off the bottom of the table.
  • BxBarracuda and Ozzz2002 were the only two to predict the Catalans second half implosion.
  • Five weekly winners this week with 5/6 correct including our two front runners, N-Bomb and illiniman14, while Dizart and Gtho4 relinquish a share of the lead.
  • George95 starts the season with a third consecutive wooden spoon and is joined this week by wwe84.
  • Howie72's weekly win leaves just PaulE and Ozzz2002 with blanks in both the weekly win and wooden spoon columns.

  • Round 4 began with St Helens recording its first home win over Warrington in 5 years to retain a 100% start to the season. Hull FC added to Catalans misery and away struggles by beating them for the 8th time at home. Leeds triumphed in a hard fought match over Wigan thanks to 3 tries in 8 dazzling first half minutes to take the lead and not look back. Salford's revival this season and unbeaten run of four matches was halted by Castleford. Scott Grix scored a hat-trick of tries in the first 9 minutes (a Super League record) to lead Huddersfield to a comfortable victory over Wakefield. Widnes enjoyed a 16 point lead with 20 minutes to go before Hull Kingston Rovers mounted a comeback with two late tries and despite throwing everything including the kitchen sink at Widnes with time running out, they could not score the crucial try to avoid defeat.
  • BxBarracuda and illiman were the only two to predict the Catalans to lose again.
  • PaulE and illiniman were the weekly winners this week with 5/6 correct giving illiniman the outright lead with a third weekly win in a row. It is the first for PaulE.
  • It was a roller coaster ride this week with more than half changing position. New highs for PaulE, BxBarracuda and ozzz20002. On the other hand N-Bomb, gtho4, paper_aero and wwe84 all sunk a little lower though N-Bomb only dropped from first to second.
  • George95 avoided a 4th consecutive wooden spoon and this week Howie72, gtho4, paper-aero and wwe84 all get to take home this special piece of cutlery.
  • ozzz2002 is feeling lonely as he is the only person without a weekly win or a spoon.

  • Round 4 began with Salford showing they are a contender for a play-off place by outclassing an injury hit Widnes team. Castleford won back-to-back for the first time his season with a close victory over Hull FC. Two solo 90-metre tries by Albert Kelly saw Hull KR leading 24-12 with 5 minutes to go before St Helens scored two late tries but could not convert the last try so went down by 2 points in their first loss of the season. Huddersfield won impressively at Warrington to end an eleven match losing streak against the Wolves. Wigan finally showed why they were the favourites heading into the season by thrashing Wakefield by 42 points. Catalans lead 22-10 early in the second half and were looking good for a win before Leeds went on a scoring spree of 28 unanswered points to leave the French side near the bottom of the table.
  • George95, wwe84 and ozzz2002 were the only people to predict Hudderfield's long losing streak against Warrington would come to an end. None of us gave Hull KR a chance of beating previously unbeaten St Helens.
  • wwe84 was the sole weekly winner with 5/6.
  • N-Bomb and Sypher missed the first game and ended up with a spoon each, only tipping 2 correctly. If they had both tipped Salford they would have still earned a spoon but paper_aero and ozzz2002 would have joined them.
  • BxBarracuda did not lodge tips this week so ran on default.
  • Another roller coaster ride this week with only four of us remaining in the same position as last week. New highs for PaulE (again) and Srini701. On the other hand N-Bomb and Sypher saw their spoon effort drop them to their lowest position all season, for N-Bomb it is the first time he drops off the podium.
  • ozzz2002 is feeling lonely as he is the only person without a weekly win or a spoon.

  • The first round of Easter matches began with a Hull derby with Hull Kingston Rovers traveling across town to look untroubled in beating their bitter rivals. Catalans Dragons won their first away game of the season, recording their biggest ever win over a hapless Wakefield. Warrington stumbled to their third defeat in a row, something they have not done since 2009, when they travelled to a Widnes team that had been demolished by Salford the previous week. Warrington could also be in trouble after a flare was thrown on to the ground from the visiting Wolves end that saw the referee halt the match for 8 minutes and lead the teams off the field. Leeds travelled to Castleford and emerged victorious to open up a two point gap at the top of the table. An improving Salford won away at Huddersfield. In a match where the defence reigned supreme, Wigan got revenge on St Helens after the latter had beaten them in the 2014 grand final. St Helens have now lost two in a row after winning their first six matches.
  • George95 was the only one of us who gave Widnes a chance of beating Warrington but none of us thought Salford would win away at Huddersfield.
  • The two at the bottom of the ladder earned a weekly win which was enough for Sypher to catch up with the four immediately above but not enough for George95 to climb off the bottom rung.
  • At the top of the table, the three on the podium leading into the week (illiniman14, Dizart and PaulE) all received spoons and were joined by three others (wwe84, ozzz2002 and srini701.
  • A spoon was not enough to diminish illiniman14's lead at the top.
  • This one round resulted in the wooden spoon column being filled with the first spoon for illiniman14, Dizart, PaulE and ozzz2002. It also saw a first weekly win for Sypher and George95, leaving only ozzz2002 and paper_aero without one.

  • The second round of Easter matches began with Catalans comfortably beating Widnes after an impressive first 22 minutes where they scored at a point a minute. Hull Kingston Rovers won both Easter matches for the first time with a narrow victory over Huddersfield. Leeds showed why they are top of the table with a big home win over Wakefield who remain at the bottom. Salford last beat Wigan in 2006 and after 17 losses in a row returned to winning ways with an exciting home win which saw both teams finish the match with only 12 players on the field. Warrington lost their fourth in a row, Castleford being the team to beat them this time. The biggest upset was the defending champion St Helens losing at home to Hull FC, making it their third loss in a row.
  • We all picked Leeds to win but no one saw St Helens getting upset at home.
  • The weekly winner was wwe84 with 4/6 though this was not enough to climb the ladder. Last week six spoons were awarded and this week we went one better (or worse) with seven spoons.
  • A spoon for illiniman14 sees the gap at the top of the ladder halve to one point while George95 remains on the bottom rung but just one point behind four others.
  • ozzz2002 dropped to his lowest position all season.
  • ozzz2002 and paper_aero remain the only two without a weekly win.

  • Round 8 began with Hull FC winning back-to-back for the first time since June last year with a home win over Widnes. Hull Kingston Rovers had not won at Castleford since 2010 and never looked like breaking the run this time with Castleford winning comfortably. Leeds kept their gap at the top of the table by beating Salford away for the 20th time in a row, the last time Salford beat Leeds at home was in November 1993. After four losses in a row Warrington won in style with a 14 try romp over Wakefield, scoring 80 points in 80 minutes without conceding any. Wigan also kept their opponents scoreless with a comfortable victory at home to the Catalans. In a bruising and hard fought match, St Helens got back to winning ways with a low scoring victory away at Huddersfield.
  • The first bonus points for a perfect round were given out this week to five of us - gtho4, Dizart, Howie72, PaulE and N-Bomb. George95 and wwe84 earned spoons with 3/6.
  • The perfect rounds and subsequent bonus points saw Dizart, N-Bomb and Howie72 overtake illiniman for the lead. George 95 remains at the bottom and drops to three points behind.
  • A new high for Howie72 and new lows for ozzz2002 and paper_aero..
  • ozzz2002 and paper_aero remain the only two without a weekly win.

  • A shortened round 9 saw two matches postponed due to the Challenge Cup 5th round, these being Hull Kingston Rovers vs Salford and Wakefield vs Hull FC. The Thursday night match saw Warrington start off where they finished last round with 10 points in the first 10 minutes before a second Dom Manfredi hat trick in five days saw Wigan come back to win. A confident Leeds side overran the defending champion St Helens to record an impressive away win that takes them six points clear at the top of the table. Huddersfield ended a three match losing run by comfortably beating the visiting Catalans side. Widnes continued their topsy-turvy season by demolishing Castleford at home by 30 points and move closer to the crucial top eight.
  • BxBarracuda was running on default fuel this week.
  • Gtho4 followed up last week's perfect round with another, tipping 4/4 to take the weekly win. Sypher, wwe84 and paper-aero could not achieve gtho4's score between them and took home a spoon each with 1/4.
  • gtho4 jumps over the three leaders from last week with the perfect round and bonus point to take a solo lead by one point.
  • The spoon from paper_aero sees him drop to his lowest position of the season with George95 now just one point behind and looking to climb off the bottom next round.
  • ozzz2002 and paper_aero remain the only two without a weekly win.

  • Thursday night saw Wigan win their first away match of the season in an error-ridden match but had to work hard against the bottom of the table Wakefield side. Huddersfield were kept scoreless in losing their opening match against Hull FC but gained revenge by comfortably beating them by 20 points this round. Warrington put on another outstanding display against the league leaders Leeds (try saying that quickly three times in a row) and beat them for the second time this season giving Kevin Sinfield a loss in his 500th match for Leeds. Widnes had only won once in their last twelve visits to St Helens whereas the Saints had lost 4 out of their last 5 matches so something had to give, it was the latter with St Helens achieving the victory. Catalans ran out deserving winners over Hull KR in France. Salford were missing 12 first team regulars either through injury or suspension but put up a fight to go down narrowly to Castleford.
  • We all tipped two matches this week, being the Wigan and St Helens victories but no one foresaw Leeds losing at home.
  • Weekly wins this time went to wwe84, BxBarracuda and George95 with 5/6, only missing the Leeds loss, ozzz2002 needed another spoon for his dinner party and thought this was the easiest way to get one so went 2/6 this week.
  • gtho4 maintains his one point lead over his nearest challenger, N-Bomb.
  • George95 found a way to climb off the bottom rung of the ladder with his weekly win, to be replaced by ozzz2002 and his spoon.
  • ozzz2002 and paper_aero still remain the only two without a weekly win.

  • Leeds were leading 22-8 at halftime in the Thursday night match before needing a penalty goal four minutes from time to escape with a 24-24 draw but could have still won at the end if the drop goal attempt had not gone wide. A severely depleted Salford had asked Hull FC if the match could be postponed but Hull FC refused and would have been kicking themselves for not agreeing until the 71st minute when they scored the winning try. St Helens had a chance to close the gap at the top to three points and duly did that with a 40 point thrashing of bottom placed Wakefield, a tenth successive loss for the Wildcats. Wigan shot out of the starting gates and scored 34 points in the first 20 minutes against Hull KR to put the result beyond doubt, slowing down a bit to win by 60 points. Castleford also jumped out to a big lead over Catalans before the visitors staged a spirited comeback to close to 26-24 but it was not enough and the Dragons eventually went down by eight points to leave them with just one away win this season. Widnes were all set to win their first away match of the season after coming from behind at half time to be leading with time running out before Warrington scored with 12 seconds left to take the win in a thriller.
  • We all tipped three matches this week, being the St Helens, Wigan and Warrington victories but no one foresaw Huddersfield drawing with Leeds.
  • Sypher was running on default fuel this week.
  • A handful of weekly wins this round going to Dizart, N-Bomb, Srini701, ozzz2002 and gtho4. Paper_aero earned himself a fifth spoon with 3/6 correct.
  • gtho4 maintains his one point lead over his nearest challenger, N-Bomb.
  • ozzz2002 did not like the view at the bottom so climbed back up the ladder with his hall of fame effort. He was replaced by paper_aero and his new spoon.
  • ozzz2002's weekly win leaves just paper_aero without blank in the hall of fame column.

  • In the previous round, Hull KR lost by 60 points against Wigan, this round they scored 54 points and their biggest win of the season against the bottom club Wakefield. Wigan got revenge on Castleford, keeping them scoreless and avenging an early season mauling from the same team. Catalans scored the winning try against St Helens four minutes from the end and added a drop goal to ice the victory with the last play of the match. A still depleted Salford lost for the fifth time in a row and will be hoping to get their injured players back soon, Huddersfield moving back into the top four. Warrington looked like they would beat Hull FC, leading 26-16 after 63 minutes before two late tries evened it up and a last second drop goal saw Hull FC emerge on top. The wobbles of table topping Leeds continued as they lost for the third time in a row, this time being surprised by a determined Widnes.
  • We all tipped tipped Wigan to beat Castleford but no one figured Warrington and Leeds would be upset.
  • George95 was running on default fuel this week.
  • Catalan's victory saw Howie72 emerge as the weekly winner with 4/6. BxBarracuda, Dizart, Sypher and illiniman take home a spoon each with 2/6 though if the latter two had not missed the first match they may have avoided any cutlery.
  • gtho4 maintains his one point lead over his nearest challenger, N-Bomb.
  • paper_aero moves up from 13th to 11th but remains at the bottom and joined by Sypher and George95
  • paper_aero remains the only person without a weekly win.

  • In the Thursday night game, two controversial video referee decisions handed Huddersfield a victory over Castleford to keep them in the top four. St Helens overcame a tough Hull FC who were chasing their seventh win in the last eight matches but just fell short in an even contest, the Saints moving back into second place. Despite missing a number of regulars, Hull KR fought valiantly against Leeds but the table topping Rhinos managed to avoid a fourth defeat in a row. In round 8, Catalans crashed to a 34 point loss away to Wigan but this time showed they are a different side at home by thrashing the Warriors by 42 points. The final match saw the bottom of the table Wakefield lose again, this time to Widnes who achieve their first away win of the season.
  • We all tipped tipped the Leeds, Warrington and Widnes victories to make it a high scoring round.
  • BxBarracuda and Sypher were both running on default fuel this week.
  • A perfect 6/6 from iliniman14 saw him take the weekly win and a bonus point. Last week 4/6 was enough for a weekly win, this time it was enough for ozzz2002, PaulE, Dizart and Howie72 to each take home a spoon.
  • gtho4 maintains his one point lead over his nearest challenger, N-Bomb.
  • We have two distinct groups - the top seven and the bottom six with a five point gap between the two groups.
  • Sypher decided it was time for him to get a taste of the bottom rung of the ladder with his default score.
  • paper_aero remains the only person without a weekly win.

  • The 9th annual Magic Weekend saw all six games played over two days, all at St James' Park in Newcastle, home of the Newcastle United football team. The first Saturday game saw Widnes comfortably beating Salford who ended with 11 players on the field after a sending off for a high tackle just before halftime and a sin-binning for punching three minutes from the end. The second game saw Hull FC gain revenge from an earlier season loss to their fierce rivals, Hull KR. The final Saturday game saw Wigan come from 12-4 down to score 23 unanswered points and once again beat the table topping Leeds in a Magic Weekend round, Leeds are still out in front but only by one point over St Helens and two points over Wigan. Sunday began with Catalans and Huddersfield playing out a thrilling draw, Huddersfield being 10-0 up at halftime but having to rely on a touchline conversion with the last play of the game to escape with a draw. Saint Helens came from 16-8 down to score 12 unanswered second half points and edge Warrington in a tense match. After leading by just six points at half time, Castleford were ruthless in the second half, scoring 34 unanswered points against bottom place Wakefield, leaving the Wildcats seven points adrift at the bottom of the ladder.
  • We all tipped tipped the Castleford victory but no one was brave enough to predict the Catalans vs Huddersfield draw. Howie72 was the only person "confident" that Wigan, after conceding 58 points last week, would beat Leeds.
  • BxBarracuda was once again running on default fuel.
  • 4/6 was once again enough to give ozzz2002, George95, Howie72, PaulE and N-Bomb a weekly win. Sypher earns the spoon this week with 1/6.
  • N-Bomb finally realised that tipping the same as gtho4 would not take him to the lead so tipped the first two games differently and it paid off, they were both successful and as a result, he takes over the top spot on the podium.
  • The gap between the top seven and bottom six increased to six points.
  • Sypher seemed to enjoy his first trip to the bottom of the ladder and decided to remain there with his competition leading 6th spoon.
  • paper_aero remains the only person without a weekly win.

  • This round began with Hull FC travelling to Widnes and it was the home team that raced out to an early 12-0 lead but that was all they scored as Hull FC took charge to score 25 unanswered points and leapfrog the Vikings in the standings. Saint Helens jumped out to a 24-0 lead at half time over Salford but the Reds scored twice quickly after half time to make things interesting, however it was not to be as the Saints survived the onslaught and pulled away again. Wigan came from behind three times to earn a crucial away win at Huddersfield. Castleford looked like running away with it when leading 24-6 after 30 minutes but in the end had to withstand a tremendous Hull KR fight back when they came back to within two points in the 53rd minute, a late try sealed it for the Tigers. Catalan Dragons once again showed poor away from but they made it hard for Warrington who ground out the victory. Wakefield scored 26 points at home to Leeds but it was not even close to being enough as the Rhinos scored 58 to easily win and keep the lead in the standings.
  • BxBarracuda and Sypher were running on default fuel.
  • We all tipped the top two teams in the standings to win, being Leeds and St Helens.
  • Howie72 earned a second bonus point for the season with a perfect 6/6 while paper_aero had to settle for a 6th spoon with 3/6.
  • Howie72's perfect round saw him jump over N-Bomb and gtho4 to take the lead by one point but it is too early in the season for him so don't expect it to last.
  • The gap between the top seven and bottom six decreased to five points while a three point gap opened up between the top three and fourth.
  • Sypher remained at the bottom with his default score while Dizart drops to his lowest position of the season.
  • paper_aero remains the only person without a weekly win.

  • Castleford must have been wondering if it was deja vu as for the second week in a row they jumped out to an 18-0 lead, for the second week in a row the home team staged a wonderful comeback with Leeds bringing the scores level at 24-24 with 10 minutes to go, for the second week in a row the Tigers finished stronger with a field goal giving them the lead and a late try sealing it. If St Helens could beat Wigan in a 2014 grand final replay they would leap frog Leeds at the top of the standings, it was tight for the first 50 minutes but then the Saints pounced on a number of Wigan errors to pull away and win comfortably. In the heat of France, the Catalan Dragons continued their fine home form with a hard fought win over in-form Hull FC who had won eight of the last ten before this loss. In an ill-tempered match Huddersfield came from behind at half time to beat Warrington, the match marred by a brawl just after half time that involved all 26 players on the field. After six losses in the last seven matches, Hull KR needed a confidence building win over Widnes to keep their top 8 play-off chances alive and duly delivered. In the battle of two struggling teams, Salford brought their eight game losing streak to an end while consigning Wakefield to a 15th successive defeat.
  • BxBarracuda, Sypher and N-Bomb were running on default fuel.
  • No one gave Castlefield a chance to win away at league leading Leeds. The challenge is now to say "league leading Leeds" quickly five times in a row.
  • PaulE is this rounds weekly winner with 5/6 while three spoons went to wwe84, Howie72 and George95 with 2/6.
  • Howie72's spoon saw gtho4 take advantage to draw level at the top. N-Bomb's default did not cost him much but he is joined in third place by PaulE.
  • The gap between the top seven and bottom six increased to six points while it tightens up at the top again.
  • Sypher remained at the bottom with his default and BxBarracuda finally makes it back to the bottom two with yet another default score.
  • paper_aero remains the only person without a weekly win.

  • A week ago Castlefield beat the then table topping Leeds, this time they beat the table topping St Helens in dramatic style, a field goal with the last play of the match earned them their first win over the Saints in seven years. A lacklustre Wigan got back to winning ways with the last 19 points of the match after being behind 12-0 to Salford early in the second half. Another home match, another win for the Catalans though Wakefield gave them a scare by drawing level early in the second half. An close first half gave no indication of a Warrington collapse in the second half as Hull KR stormed away to win easily over a free falling Warrington side. In an entertaining match, Leeds won for only the third time in the last seven matches and in doing so jumped back over St Helens to first place in the standings, Hull FC stay in the top eight but only just as they stay ahead of their fierce rivals, Hull KR, on points difference. Huddersfield had a player sent off in the 12th minute but despite this came away from Widnes with a victory that kept them in the top four in the standings.
  • BxBarracuda and Sypher were running on default fuel.
  • It was an interesting tipping week with three games tipped by everyone, being the victories by Wigan, Catalans and Leeds. The Hull KR victory was tipped by no one and only srini701 saw the Tigers beating the league leading and defending champion St Helens.
  • If you tipped the Castleford victory you earned yourself a weekly win and that honour goes to srini701 with 5/6. If you did not tip the Huddersfield victory you earned a spoon with 3/6 as wwe84, Dizart, PaulE and George95 all did. This gives wwe84 and George95 a competition leading 7th spoon though it could have all been different but for the many default scores so far.
  • Not much has changed at the top, only srini701 replacing PaulE for a share of third. Nothing has changed at the bottom either.
  • The gap between the top seven and bottom six decreased to five points with a small gap opening up between 5th and 6th.
  • Sypher and BxBarracuda remain the bottom two with more default scores.
  • We are still awaiting the first weekly win from paper_aero though he got close this week, if it was not for the last second field goal from Castleford....

  • After a week off for the Challenge Cup, Super League began again with Wigan having the chance to move equal top of the standings if they could beat Warrington for the 6th successive time but the Wolves had other ideas and accounted for an out-of-sorts Wigan. Leeds ruined what had the potential to be the match of the round by destroying second place St Helens and moving three points clear with three rounds left before the start of the Super 8's. Hull FC got revenge over Wakefield after losing to them in a midweek catch up match and in doing so moved into the top 8. Castleford gave their top 4 hopes a boost with a comfortable win over Widnes. Huddersfield remained in the top 4 with a good home performance at home to Hull KR, the loss for Hull KR took them out of the top 8. Salford kept alive their slim Super 8 hopes with a thrilling and narrow victory over Catalans, the Dragons once again showing how they struggle to win away from France.
  • BxBarracuda and Sypher were running on default fuel.
  • It was another interesting tipping week with nine of us having identical tips, two games being tipped by everyone (the Hull FC and Castleford wins) and no one predicting Wigan to lose at Warrington.
  • All nine who had identical tips also earned a weekly win and were joined by srini701, who had slightly different tips, to make it 10 weekly winners with 4/6. This leaves poor ozzz2002, the only other tipper this week, to get himself a spoon with 2/6 and must be wondering what he did to deserve this.
  • As you can imagine, very little changes in the standings. The only movement was wwe84 drawing level with ozzz2002 in 8th place.
  • The gap between the top seven and bottom six increased to seven points.
  • Sypher and BxBarracuda remain the bottom two with more default scores.
  • paper_aero finally filled in the last blank space in hall of fame column with his first weekly win.
