NRL
2015 Tipping Comp

The NRL season will be kicking off next week on Thursday 5th March. The rule for this year's comp are the same as previous years, viz.

    • One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
    • Default if you forget to pick, the wooden spoon score.
    • Perfect picks score a bonus point.
    • If needed, end-of-season tiebreaker for podium spots will be HoF v Spoons. Largest margin wins, or if the margin is equal, most weekly HoF wins.
    • Deadline is kick-off in the first game, usually 7:30pm to 7:45pm on Friday night AEST or AEDT. It could be earlier, if the NZ Warriors have a Friday night game at home.

This is the 16th edition of the NRL tipping comp at FT (it was the first-ever tipping comp).

Last year we had 11 runners. This year everyone's back for another does, plus Dizart rolled up to the starting gate, to make it an even dozen.

The first round saw just one game in double digits with correct picks, one game was picked by no-one (you'd have to have rocks in your head to picked Canberra to win away, but they did). Throw in a few more upsets and we have two weekly winners with 5/8 .. ozzz2002 and N-Bomb.

How'd they jag 5/8 you may ask .. who knows. Our office comp has 89 runners and 7 people scored 7/8 and, of course, they also studied the form and did not use a dartboard, ha ha

There was one wooden spoon to open proceedings .. gtho4 scored a humungous 2/8. He starts the 2015 season with a bang, just like the Dragons.

Oh yeah, the Roosters won. They got lucky, yet again.

They are the two most unpredictable teams in the league. I am surprised that they did not beat each other! smile

And 7/8? Ludicrous!

  • In a scrappy arm wrestle the Sharks lost it's 9th home game in a row after leading narrowly at half-time. The Bulldogs overran the Eels who added to their injury woes ahead of their next match. The Panthers scored 8 tries in demolishing the poor Titans who could not score a point. The Sea-Eagles could not score a point in the second half but held off a fast finishing Storm to win by two points. The Cowboys let a 14-0 lead slip at home to eventually go down to the Knights. In the match of the round between two of the favourites, the Rabbitohs scored three late tries to come out on top over the Roosters. The Warriors went to Canberra and two early second half Raiders saw the Warriors score two tries to triumph in an even match. A superb start by the Tigers saw them ahead by 20-4 at half time against the Dragons but could only add a late penalty in a dour second half.
  • We all picked the Panthers to win but only Davjack foresaw the Knights winning away in Townsville and I am still scratching my head as to how he did it.
  • illinman14 was this week's winner with an impressive 7/8 and ozzz2002 must have felt bad for gtho4 last week so decided to match his 2/8 and earn himself a spoon.
  • N-Bomb retains a share of the lead but his partner on the top spot of the podium is illiniman14 this week, ozzz2002 not only felt bad for gtho4, he thought he looked lonely so free-fell from the lead to join gtho4 at the bottom in the space of one round.

  • Round 3 began with the Bulldogs eking out a narrow victory at the Sea Eagles despite a controversial video ref decision in favour of the home team. A damaging first half saw the Broncos record their biggest win over the disappointing Cowboys since 2008. A fast start saw the Warriors win their opening home match of the season against an Eels team that outscored them in the second half. The Dragons, after a dismal first half in which they trailed 18-0 after 20 minutes, stormed back for a narrow victory. The Storm were too clinical for the Sharks who only made the score slightly more respectable with two late tries. The Rabbitohs maintained their 100% start to the season with a home victory over the Tigers. The Knights also maintained their unbeaten start with a late try securing them a victory at the Titans. The Roosters overcame the Panthers in a match between two of the favourites but another controversial video ref decision denied the Panthers a try in the first half.
  • wwe84 decided to be different this week and not get a weekly win (which 7 of us got) or a spoon (which the remaining 4 received).
  • A weekly win for N-Bomb sees him out in front by himself and a spoon from George95, along with weekly wins by gtho4 and ozzz2002, sees him at the bottom but only one point behind the five immediately above him. New highs for Davjack, Sypher, wwe84 and gtho4 whereas there are new lows for Dizart, Howie72 and George95.

  • There had been quiet talk that the Rabbitohs could go through the season undefeated but the Eels decided to end that talk early with a superb victory. The Tigers looked like winning easily when leading 24-6 with 22 minutes left but the Bulldogs showed they had some bite left with 3 tries to tie it at 24-24 after 80 minutes giving us the first golden point match of the season. Both teams had a chance before Moses Mbye won it for the Bulldogs with a field goal that barely rose above cross bar height. A 3 try opening was enough for the Knights to hold off a fast finishing Panthers to remain unbeaten. The Sharks slumped to a 10th consecutive home loss after a late intercept try saw the Titans stun them. The Dragons overcame an injury hit Sea Eagles in a low scoring match to give them back-to-back wins. 20 years ago the Warriors played their first match in the NRl, it ended in a loss to the Broncos at home, this time it was a repeat with a dominating first half from the Broncos seeing them 16-0 up over the Warriors before the Warriors came back to tie it at 16-16 late in the match. A controversial penalty gave the Broncos the lead back before a late try after another Warriors error sealed it. An early try for the Roosters against the Raiders was an indication of what was to come and they ran away with the match to record a big victory. The Storm lead the Cowboys 16-4 with 20 minutes to go and 17-10 with 2 minutes to go before it became the Jonathan Thurston show, the Cowboys scored a try out wide and though they could have declined the conversion attempt to give them more time to win the match, Thurston took the kick from the sideline and nailed it. A penalty gave them the field position and a Thurston field goal tied it up. He repeated this with 30 seconds to go in the first period of golden point extra time for a stunning win.
  • Upsets this week saw a lowly 4/8 earn a weekly win for wwe84, gtho4 and illiniman14. On the other hand Howie72 gains a second spoon in a row with a season leading low of 1/8.
  • None of us gave the Eels a chance to beat the Rabbitohs, illiniman14 was the only one to believe in the Titans and Howie was thankful we all had the Roosters to win as he avoided the dreaded 0.
  • N-Bomb remains out front by one point. Howie72's spoon saw him drop to the bottom, the god news being he can not go any lower. New highs for wwe84 and gtho4 whereas there are new lows for BxBarracuda and Howie72.

  • The first match of the round saw a controversial end, the Bulldogs thought they had it won with a late field goal but in the last minute the Rabbitohs were attempting a long range field goal to take the match into golden point. The Bulldogs captain collided with the legs of the kicker while trying to charge down the field goal attempt. Contact with the legs of the kicker is not allowed and a penalty was awarded. As it was a field goal attempt (which almost hit the corner flag) the penalty was awarded in front of the posts and 10 metres out giving Souths an easy penalty shot to win the match. After the game the match officials were hit by bottles etc thrown from the spectators putting one in hospital. The Broncos comfortably beat the Titans and the Raiders did the same away to the Sea Eagles. The Dragons kept the Knights scoreless in the wet, the Sharks got their first win since July last year by upsetting the Roosters. In an error-ridden match, the Tigers scored three tries in the last 11 minutes to get past the Eels. The Storm were the only home team to win by accounting for the Warriors who had their chances but committed too many errors. The Cowboys started where they finished last week and had a big win away to the Panthers.
  • More upsets this week saw a lowly 4/8 once again earn a weekly win for Sypher and Davjack. The rest of us other than BxBarracuda who was running on default, earned a spoon with 3/8. That is 8 spoons so we had to find more out the back before handing them out.
  • We all predicted the Broncos to beat the Titans but none of us saw the Raiders, the Sharks or the Cowboys winning away.
  • N-Bomb remains out front by one point and Howie72 remains at the bottom. A new high for Sypher and new lows for BxBarracuda and Dizart.

  • Friday night saw the Sharks win their first home match in almost a year when they defeated the Knights. The Broncos went to the top of the table after a try in golden point extra time saw them consign the Roosters to another loss. The Eels held a narrow half time lead at home before being blown away by the Titans in the second half, conceding 26 unanswered points. The Warriors celebrated Manu Vatuvei's 200th NRL game for the Warriors with a win over the Tigers, the Beast scoring two tries in the victory. The Raiders are generally difficult to beat at home but the Storm ground out a narrow win to leave the Raiders winless at home in their first three home matches of the season. The Dragons continued their revival by comprehensively beating the depleted Bulldogs. On Monday night the Rabbitohs lead the Cowboys 12-4 at home at half time before the Cowboys scored 26 unanswered second half points to win easily.
  • Weekly wins went to gtho4, N-Bomb and illiniman14 with 5/8, for gtho4 this is his fourth in a row. One spoon this week to Howie72 with 2/8, by a strange coincidence it is his fourth spoon in a row and he is hoping gtho4 does not make it five in a row....
  • We all predicted the inconsistent Warriors to win at home but no one foresaw the Eeels or Rabbitohs to be blitzed in the second half at home.
  • N-Bomb remains out front by one point and Howie72 is in danger of being cast adrift at the bottom. A new high for gtho4 and a new low for paper_aero.

  • Friday night saw Sypher's confident prediction come true and St George did continue winning Friday night ways in a top of the table clash with Brisbane, winning by 2 points with a late try in a tough and tight match. In a scrappy match, the Bulldogs ran in four second half tries to earn a victory over injury depleted Manly that was comfortably outplayed. After a close first half, Gold Coast ran away with the match at home to Penrith, the first time they have scored 30 points in consecutive games for almost two years. Once again the Warriors are wondering how they let a match slip away...the answer is simple, they made too many errors once again and the Cowboys scored the winning try with two minutes left. Melbourne and Sydney played a classic match in the rain with only 10 errors between them despite the weather, you could say Melbourne weathered the storm to win with a field goal 40 seconds from full time but of course I would never say that pun out loud. After 25 minutes Wests were leading 22-0 over Canberra and the game looked all over until the Raiders staged their biggest comeback to win away once again, the Tigers thought they had grabbed the lead again in the 76th minute only for the try to be disallowed for obstruction and Canberra to go upon another raid and score immediately at the other end. The Eels proved too slippery for Newcastle as they came from behind twice to win against the Knights for the first time in the last seven attempts and the first time in Newcastle since 2009. The pre-season favourite South Sydney lost again when they were downed (or should it be drowned) by Cronulla in torrential rain and winds gusting to 80km/h, snorkels and flippers would have been more appropriate than rugby league boots.
  • Weekly wins went to gtho4, wwe84, Dizart, George95, illiniman14 and Howie72 with a paltry 4/8, for gtho4 this is his fifth in a row and the first for Dizart, George95 and Howie72 which fills the Hall of Fame column. Howie72 avoided a fifth spoon in a row with this week's cutlery going to paper_aero and BxBarracuda who had missed the first two matches.
  • No one thought that the Rabbitohs would lose again but the Sharks proved they are at home in water. Howie72 was ony one who thought Canberra's impressive away form would continue and ozzz2002 was the only one who saw Parramatta snapping their losing streak against the Knights.
  • N-Bomb is once again joined by illiniman14 at the top of the ladder and Howie72 remains at the bottom though has closed the gap to one point. George95 climbs to a new high position while BxBarracuda and Davjack sink to new lows.

  • The ANZAC round began on Friday night with the Tigers proving that cats are the sworn enemies of dogs by mauling the Canterbury Bulldogs. Anzac Day saw a host of matches beginning early with the Warriors once again throwing away a winning position to go down at home to Gold Coast. The Cowboys travelled to Newcastle and came away narrow winners for their fifth straight win, this time they did not leave it late but consigned the Knights to a fourth loss in a row after starting the season with four wins. In a match that was delayed for 30 minutes by lightning and hail, the Dragons breathed enough fire to edge out the Roosters in the rain. Paramatta gave the Broncos a scare in Brisbane by battering them in the final ten minutes but could not get the game tying try and conversion before a late 90m runaway try sealed it for Brisbane to end the ANZAC Day matches. Sunday saw an injury hit Penrith overcome Cronulla. Canberra once again overcame a half time deficit on the road to stun the Rabbitohs by eight points, the first time since 2012 they have won three away games in a row.
  • In a low scoring round where everyone achieved a strike rate of under 50%, six of us got the weekly win with 3/8 and the remaining six took home spoons with 2/8. It was Davjack's first spoon though he has been on default fuel for three of the eight rounds so far. I am not sure (as I have not checked) what the record for weekly wins in a row is but gtho4 must be getting close as he achieves his sixth in a row.
  • No one gave the Titans a chance of beating the Warriors in Auckland but we all picked the Bronco's win over the Eels. Davjack was the only one to see the Raiders beating the Rabbitohs away and ozzz2002 managed to see the Tigers victory at the Bulldogs when no one else could.
  • N-Bomb and illiniman14 remain at the top of the ladder but are finally joined by gtho4 after his run of weekly wins. Howie72 remains at the bottom but managed to climb up a rung to join Davjack. George95 again climbs to a new high position as does gtho4 while Dizart and Davjack sink to new lows.

Until N-Bomb broke it recently, it had been five. If gtho4 does it again next week, he will tie N-Bomb with seven.

  • After an international break where New Zealand beat Australia for the third time in a row, round 9 began with Brisbane scoring a try in the last minute to secure a win over a Penrith side that refused to go away and had taken a 5-4 lead with 5 minutes left but it was not to be for the Panthers. The other Friday night match saw the Sydney Roosters crowing after a 3 try burst in 6 first half minutes put them out of reach of the Tigers. Canberra won their first home match of the season in style with a 40 point thumping of the Gold Coast. The Warriors looked like losing a match late once again after Cronulla took the lead with 3 minutes left but a charge down of a kick ended in the Warriors scoring the winning try one play later to deflate the Sharks. Once again the Cowboys left it late to secure the win, this time the winning try came with 11 minutes left and a later field goal secured the victory over the Bulldogs. Bottom of the table Manly won for the second time in a row with the faltering Newcastle Knights the victims this time. A disciplined and clinical Melbourne Storm kept the Parramatta Eels scoreless in the second half to secure the win after it was level at half time. In a tight Monday night match, Souths ended their 3 match losing streak and the Dragon's 6 game winning streak, eventually finishing on the right side of a 16-10 scoreline.
  • Davjack and George95 were running on default fuel this week.
  • gtho4 failed in his attempt for a record equalling 7 weekly wins in a row, Howie72 put an end to the streak with a perfect 8/8 and the first bonus point of the season. The spoon went to illiniman14 with 4/8, a score that would have achieved a weekly win last round.
  • We all figured that Brisbane, North Queensland and Melbourne would all finish on the winning side.
  • N-Bomb did not like being crowded on the top spot of the podium so has taken a solo lead once again with a one point gap to gtho4. Howie72 rocketed up the table with his perfect round to go from 11th equal to 5th equal. Another default score from Davjack sees him take over the bottom of the ladder by himself.
  • New lows for illiniman14, BxBarracuda and Davjack. Sypher is the only person who has yet to receive any cutlery.

  • In the battle of the contenders for the NSW Origin halves, neither of the Bulldogs or Roosters pairings did enough to be certainties though the Roosters overcame a slow start to beat the Bulldogs comfortably in the end. The Queensland derby was tied at 20-20 with 10 minutes left before the Cowboys powered over with the go-ahead try, they sealed the victory later with a field goal and a last minute try to give them a club record 7th win in a row. The Warriors lead the Eels 12-0 at halftime before the home team squared it up at 12-12, late field goals from each team took it into golden point extra time where the Warriors scored a try to take the win. Another golden point extra time was needed to separate the Titans and the Sharks with the away team, Cronulla, once again ending on the right side of the ledger. Melbourne held off a fast finishing South Sydney to retain a share of the lead with the Broncos and Cowboys though it was close as Alex Johnston put a foot on the touchline in the lead-up to what could have been the winning try for the Rabbitohs with five minutes left. The Dragons joined the aforementioned three at the top of the ladder with a 14 point victory at home to the Raiders. Newcastle snapped a five game losing streak with a home win over an error-ridden Tigers. In a mighty arm-wrestle at Brookvale Oval, a late field goal saw the visiting Panthers overcome the Sea Eagles by one point on Monday night.
  • Davjack was once again running on default fuel this week.
  • gtho showed last week's failure to earn a record equalling 7th weekly win in a row was just a temporary blip as he earned another this week, tipping 6/8 along with ozzz2002, George95, Sypher, N-Bomb and iliniman14. The spoon went to BxBarracuda wih 3/8.
  • The top four all gained a weekly win so nothing has changed out front, N-Bomb still leads by one point, a position he has been in all season. Another default score from Davjack sees him remain at the bottom.
  • Sypher is the only person who has yet to receive any cutlery.

  • Origin week saw a shortened round of matches with just four NRL and one Origin. A converted try five minutes from the end saw the Rabbitohs hop past the Eels on Friday night, the first time they have won without Adam Reynolds since he made his debut in 2012. A dour Saturday match saw the Cowboys roping in the Tigers 8-0, the only try coming in the 77th minute. Sunday saw the complete opposite with the Bulldogs travelling to Canberra and emerging on top in a 13 try thriller. The Raiders overcame a 26-0 half time deficit to have it level at 34-34 going into the final minute where a field goal gave the lead back to the Bulldogs and a try straight from an attempted short kick-off sealed it. The Broncos were missing six players to Origin duty and were down 18-6 in the 39th minute before embarrassing the Knights with three tries in seven minutes. They did not look back and headed back to Brisbane still with a share of the lead at the top of the standings. The first of the Origin matches saw Queensland travel to Sydney in what promised to be a bruising and closely fought match, they jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before NSW began to outmuscle them and hit back to take a half time lead of 10-6. The second half was a big disappointment for NSW as they struggled and made simple errors but their defence held out and they only conceded one try in the 55th minute. At 10-10 late in the game it came down to who could execute the field goal option the best, Queensland did it well and NSW did not, giving Queensland first blood with a one point victory. Both sides have plenty to work on heading into the second match.
  • Davjack was once again running on default fuel this week.
  • Another five weekly winners, this time being wwe84, Dizart, George95, illinman14 and Howie72 with 3/5. In the shock of the round, gtho4 takes home a spoon with 1/5.
  • N-Bomb opens up a two point gap at the top courtesy of gtho4's spoon. Three players are tied for second and another four points back sees six players tied for 5th. Another default score from Davjack sees him remain at the bottom and is starting to fall well behind with BxBarracuda.
  • Sypher is the only person who has yet to receive any cutlery.

  • Post Origin 1 began with the Eels ahead of the Panthers at half time before they began their usual second half fade with Penrith drawing level, this time Parramatta responded with two quick tries and that was enough for the victory despite another Penrith comeback in the last 10 minutes. Souths travelled to the Gold Coast and eked out a tight 6 point victory with plenty of help from the Titans who made every error known to rugby league and maybe even some new ones. Brisbane and Canberra looked like heading into half time level at 12-12 until a miracle try from the Broncos after the half time hooter broke the deadlock and they never looked back, keeping the opposition scoreless in the second half for the second game in a row. Manly looked like ending the Cowboys's winning streak when leading going into the last minute of the match before North Queensland engineered a great escape in the best tradition of Steve McQueen, scoring a last ditch converted try to take the win. The Warriors set a NRL record with a fifth match in a row decided by the same winning margin, this time coming out on the winning side away to the Knights. The Dragons breathed plenty of fire in attack against the Sharks, thrashing them by 36 points and scoring more than 40 points for only the third time since round 18, 2009. In a dominating display, the Roosters easily accounted for the Storm in the Monday night match.
  • Davjack, BxBarracuda and illiniman14 were all running on default fuel this week.
  • This round we all gained a weekly win (7 of us) or a spoon (ozzz2002 and gtho4), gtho4 will be cursing the State of Origin, not only did NSW lose but he now has two spoons out of two since the shortened rounds began.
  • N-Bomb maintains his two point lead at the top with Sypher in sole possession of second place. The six players tied for 5th drops to 5 players thanks to ozzz2002's spoon. It was a decent week for running on default, earning just one point less than the weekly winners but it does nothing for the bottom two as they remain six and eight points behind tenth place.
  • Sypher is the only person who has yet to receive any cutlery.

  • Round 13 began with Brisbane in dominating form at home to Manly, recording their equal biggest winning margin over the Sea Eagles and taking them back to the top of the standings. Gold Coast snapped their three game losing streak by winning away to the West Tigers, the Titans running away with the first half but having to withstand a tremendous Tigers comeback as they hit the lead with 13minutes to go but the Titans responded with a try and hung on for a much needed win. Canberra travelled to Newcastle and continued their impressive away form with a comprehensive 22 point victory. Once again Souths took their home match against the Warriors on the road to Perth and once again it proved too much for the Warriors as they were demolished by the Rabbitohs. Penrith were their own worst enemy in an error-ridden performance in being held scoreless at home to the Melbourne Storm. In a bruising match, the Cronulla forwards paved the way for an upset win over the Sydney Roosters though they also upset them in round 5 so maybe not as surprising. In an entertaining match, the Bulldogs scored three tries in the last 20 minutes to defeat the top of the table Dragons. North Queensland looked dead and buried in the 53nd minute against Parramatta as they were behind by 24 points, then the Cowboys came alive with five tries in just over 10 minutes, once again grasping victory from the jaws of defeat for their 10th win in a row.
  • Davjack, BxBarracuda and N-Bomb were all running on default fuel this week.
  • We all believed (or guessed) Brisbane and North Queensland would emerge victorious but for the second time this season, no one thought Cronulla would beat the Roosters.
  • Howie72 was the weekly winner with 7/8 while George95 took home the spoon with 3/8.
  • N-Bomb maintains his lead even with going default but it is cut to one point and the top six have closed in, just three points between first and sixth now. The regular defaulters remain at the bottom of the table.
  • Sypher is the only person who has yet to receive any cutlery.
