This year's Madness comp will be at the same site as last year. A bracket for 2015 has been setup once again at cbssports.com .. for those of us who played last year, you're half-way there, as invite emails have been sent by csbssports.com to all of last year's participants (using last year's email addresses); the email displays your reg'd ID. The scoring system remains unchanged. There are 63 games in this comp; we pick all of them in one go on the cbssports.com website:
1st Round (32 games) : 1 pt 2nd Round (16 games) : 2 pts 3rd Round ( 8 games) : 3 pts (regional semis ) Sweet Sixteen 4th Round ( 4 games) : 4 pts (regional finals) Elite Eight 5th Round ( 2 games) : 6 pts (national semis ) Final Four 6th Round ( 1 game ) : 9 pts (national final) Seedings: additional pts added for each correct pick, being the team's seed. |
Location: http://www.cbssports.com/login/ftmm.mayhem Group password: ----- if that doesn't work, try this link: http://ftmm2004.mayhem.cbssports.com/e If you've sucessfully logged in, you will see this in the top LH corner of the screen: March Madness at FT 2015 Tipping Comp- if you'd like to join the Madness tipping comp but do not have a cbssports ID, there's a link on that page to register. You must have a cbs ID to play in this comp! Please note - you may, but don't have to, use your real name to register (surname, first name); but please pick something for those two fields that looks like your FT username (so that we know who you are).
- this also applies to those who played last year, but can't remember their ID and/or have changed their email address and thus can't retrieve their password (which they've forgotten) .. you will need to re-register.
- please check your reg'd email address in your account settings/profile after you login.
This year's tipping comp is the 13th edition of March Madness! No one has retained their title in this comp, and no one has won it twice (but some have been on the podium twice). The defending title-holder is themonarch.. silver and bronze went to illiniman14 and George95. The winner of the 2008 comp, ralzzz, holds the record for the biggest winning margin (see summary tables of last 12 comps in the post below this one) .. and doomed won bronze that year the hard way; he failed to pick any of the Final Four! Howie72 holds the record for the most correct picks with 51/63, achieved in the 2007 comp.

This year's Madness starts on Thursday, March 19 and the final is on Monday, April 6. The bracket will open for tipping when the field is inserted by cbssports.com, which should happen on Sunday, March 15. However, the last four teams to qualify will not be known until Monday and Tuesday (they will enter the comp as the four #16 seeds) .. btw a #16 seed has never won a game against their #1 seed opponents since the NCAA started the current Madness format in 1985. Last Four play-in: Tue/Wed 17/18 March now aka First Four First Round: Thu-Fri March 19-20 Second Round: Sat-Sun March 21-22 Third Round: Thu-Fri March 26-27 Fourth Round: Sat-Sun March 28-29 Final Four: Saturday 4th April Championship: Monday 6th April Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN Deadline: cbssports/com will close the bracket of 63 picks at noon EDT on Thursday, March 19th. Good luck remembering your password (if you receive the email) or your ID (if you're reg'd but have changed your email address) .. and good luck registering if you're new! To confirm you're in and that everything's hunky dory, please post in the Group Message Board (it's in the Brackets drop-down menu). This is why they call it madness!!
Truer words have never been spoken. In a round filled with upsets and otherwise close games, LeoDaVinci goes out to an early lead, hitting 13/16 picks. He matched N-Bomb in that respect, but the former tipped one upset while the latter got a favorite to win, explaining the point differential. Also tied in second is ozzz2002, who notched 12/16, but got an upset that kept him in the hunt during the first day. In our search for the first repeat winner of this comp, N-Bomb is the only one of the three to have won before. What’s the common thread of the top 3? They were the only ones to pick 9 Purdue.
Slightly behind is srini701, who was two Purdue points away from being in the lead. Instead, he sits 15 points back in 4th place, because this is madness. A large gap separates the top 4 from the rest of the field, who seemingly all missed some combination of 11 UCLA, 10 Ohio State, 5 Utah, 6 Butler, or 8 NC State. dg_dave was a single 7 VCU point in regulation from going from 30 points down to just 11. kevinatilusa got both the UCLA and Ohio State games, but tried for too many other upsets. toocool4u, just 1 point back, who was the highest tipper to pick an 13 Eastern Washington upset.
Surprisingly, 6 games were picked unanimously. Everyone nailed the 3 Notre Dame, 2 Arizona, 1 Villanova, and 1 Kentucky games. Everyone also missed the 14 UAB upset over 3 Baylor and the 14 Georgia State over 3 Iowa State.
Three tippers picked Baylor in their Final 4 - LeoDaVinci, dg_dave, and Sypher. Another 2 tippers picked Iowa State in their Final 4 - toocool4u and illiniman14. themonarch not only picked 6 SMU in his Final 4, but also to lose in the national championship game!
Perhaps the most talked about moment of the first day was the way in which UCLA beat SMU. Down 59-57, UCLA put up a 3-pointer in an attempt to take the lead. The shot clearly missed, but a small portion of the ball would likely have hit the outside edge of the rim. Before that happened, however, an SMU player tipped the ball away, and goaltending was called, giving UCLA a 60-59 victory.
With so much damage already done, we look forward to the second day and the madness it will surely bring as well!

This is why they call it madness!!
Madness? What's he talking about? 15 of 16 games were all chalk on the second day, only broken up by the very last game when 11 Dayton pounded 6 Providence. All five years the last four at-large teams have had play-in games, one of the winners of those games went on to win in the first round. However, one streak was broken as no 12 seeds beat a 5 seed for the first time since 2007. Perhaps it was replaced by the 13-4 upset, of which two happened yesterday and another two nearly happened today.
The surprisingly predictable results turned the table upside-down. toocool4u, previously in 7th, hit every single game and vaulted to the top of the leaderboard. He is also the only player to have over 300 maximum possible points remaining, but that owes in large part to his choice of 7 Michigan State in the title game. LeoDaVinci dropped a spot as he had the audacity to pick some upsets in the NCAA Tournament. srini701 finishes out the podium by hitting another 12 games correctly, and he would be well into the lead if 13 Valparaiso had completed the upset of 4 Maryland. None of the three members of the podium have won this comp previously, and are all prime contenders to continue the tradition of no repeat winners.
ozzz2002, a long shot for a non-repeat winner, dropped from 2nd to 4th and lost his national champion, 10 Georgia in the process. He still has the second-highest maximum points possible, most likely due to his inclusion of 10 Ohio State in the Final Four. The first choice for a repeat winner is illiniman14, who rose from 10th to 5th by picking 15/16, only missing the 7 Iowa throttling of 10 Davidson. However, an average first day performance means he will likely fall back in tomorrow's action. Another repeat candidate is N-Bomb, who dropped from 2nd to 6th by expecting several upsets except the one that actually happened. The top 6 are only separated by 17 points, meaning that 2 games are all that separate a tipper from the top of the pack.
Perhaps dg_dave was foreshadowing the madness that was his second day, as he drops from 5th to 14th by predicting a host of upsets except for Dayton. However, he still has more live picks than most of the field, so he may just vault right back up to where he was shortly.
This day was mostly a story of close calls. 4 West Virginia hit a 3 with under 30 seconds left to ward off 14 Buffalo 68-62. 7 Wichita State held only a 2-point lead on 10 Indiana with 30 seconds left, but the Hoosiers were done scoring and lost 81-76. 15 Belmont even gave 2 Virginia a run for its money before late free throws made it a comfortable victory. 13 UC-Irvine had a chance to tie or beat 4 Louisville at the buzzer, but with a foul to give the Cardinals were aggressive and stole the ball away to run out the clock. 13 Valparaiso had a chance to tie 4 Maryland, but a steal in the last second allowed the favorite to move on in that game as well.
The tournament moves on, and suddenly we find ourselves wanting for upsets. But will any come tomorrow? Only time will tell.

Should this 15/16 and 16/16 be included in the FT Hall of Fame? Well done to both of you!

Appropriate that the game site has "Mayhem" in the url. If you want mayhem, either make a bracket or go to Allstate...lol.

Several tippers took big hits in today’s games, none more so than illiniman14 and kevinatilusa, who both lost their national championship loser (1 Villanova and 4 Georgetown, respectively). Four other tippers lost Final Four picks with those teams going out as well. ozzz2002 was in the unique position of losing another 10 seed he picked in the Final Four, this time Ohio State, and despite currently being in second now is tied for the 4th-lowest maximum points possible.
toocool4u remains strong on top of the board, although he didn't quite match yesterday's perfect performance (which was impossible as no one had a live team winning the 14 Georgia State-6 Xavier game). He still has far and away the most maximum points possible, but that gets put on the line tomorrow when 7 Michigan State takes on 2 Virginia.
LeoDaVinci completes the trifecta, as he has now owned every spot in the podium at some point during the comp. He falls back to third, tied with srini701. srini701 has the 2nd-highest maximum possible points and the highest number of live picks remaining. None of the 4 tippers in the top 3 spots have previously won March Madness before, so we look primed to continue the tradition of no repeat winners for a 14th year.
The past winners continue to stalk back in 5th and 6th place. illiniman14 lost a national championship game pick, and now only has more possible points than ozzz2002 of those above him. N-Bomb meanwhile gained a little ground and has the third-highest maximum possible points of the field. The entire top 6 is only separated by 9 points at this juncture.
The beginning of the day started slow, with somewhat-close but never really nail-biting games as the favorites rolled through. Then 8 NC State showed up and started leading 1 Villanova fairly comfortably during the 2nd half. Still, they let Villanova narrow a 62-54 lead to 69-68 in just over 3 minutes, but it was too little too late as late free throws and an errant inbounds pass iced the game for the Wolfpack.
5 Utah and 4 North Carolina both won fairly comfortably, but then the last game of the night gave plenty of excitement. Up 47-41 with 9 minutes left, 6 Butler let the game bleed away until 3 Notre Dame went up 55-52. A 3-pointer with just under 3 minutes left tied the game at 55, followed by absolutely no scoring until regulation was over. In overtime, the Fighting Irish never trailed and finished out the game 67-62.
And a small programming note that the Sunday games may be up later than usual due to my beginning spring break and the fact that the next batch of games won’t start until Thursday. Plan accordingly.
