We had a thread go off on a tangent (see "Searching On Your Name in Google"). While it's an interesting and fun thread, I do think the initial part of it is something that needs to be brought up. Especially for any new internet friends we have here.

Internet privacy is an important thing. And, you need to be very careful with what you put online - you don't know who's going to see it or use it for ill purposes.

Here's the first part of the other thread:

Hi and yes indeed there is. Click on your private messages thing. Then at the top left corner you'll see "my profile" and there's a place you can edit your profile.
Are you going to tell us what fair city you come from?
See you soon.

Hiya,,,I was just browsing through some older topics to see if there was anything I could add to instead of starting a new thread,,,this might be appropriate here
Even though this is a "private forum" where you need to be registered with a password to post messages,,,I would still be cautious about what information you supply. As a few of you know, I am a strong advocate of online privacy,,,and quite aware of the "electronic footprints" which are left behind by what one does, and says, and where one goes online! (The "cut and paste" utility can take your words to places you never intended them to go, if someone so desires to do that for some weird reason,,,)

I thought that I would do a google search on "moonrockie",,,,and sure enough the results returned directed me to the "Welcome!" I received when I became the community's 5000th member! Posts are archived in searchable databases,,,the "electronic footprints" are there,,,,and,,perhaps,,,they will be for years!

Recently I crafted a quiz which I purposely made very easy. It was more of a public service quiz, than what I suppose most people would consider "trivia",,,but,,,only one person has sent me a negative message about it,,,so,,,maybe I'll make more like that one,,,if they are acceptable..??

Stay safe!

Interesting. Well my screenname is just the heather plant in French as well as a family name and the name of a famous writer.
But what you must think of is that a search engine goes for combinations that occur, and it accesses many many people's "bookshelves" so to speak, depending on how they are arranged. So even if your name is very common in the English speaking world, you put another word in like a city name that is distinctive and you'll find something like a sports score in amateur sports where you have been cited without your knowledge!
As the name I bear is only from descendants of people in a certain area of Italy, anybody listed is generally related to my kids no matter what country they eventually settled in.
I was alarmed to see the birth records pop up for my sister and my cousin, born in a small town. I mean, first hit!

So even though your name might not be that distinctive like Anne Smith or something, if you were to add, Podunk Illinois, the filter might find you'd been listed as winning an award for charity, participating in a barbeque, or attending your high school reunion!

If I sound rather familiar with this procedure, it's one of the skills I use in my profession from the beginning of the internet's expansion.

I was not only listed but also my degrees.
Another thing you need to watch out for is the reverse telephone directory. I wish they didn't put it on the net.

Thank you, Linda for sorting through this

It looks like more people are interested in the Google search aspect of it for their entertainment,,,I am happy to see that you recognized my original intent!

I see too many people in forums who want to tell the world about every little detail of their lives,,,one should NEVER assume that a "private forum" is private. Everyone, regardless of age, should safeguard their identity. Whatever privacy is left in this technologically advanced world, is only that which we work at to maintain for ourselves!!

Thank you again for taking the time to see my point ,,,,it is very much appreciated.
