Australian Football League | AFL | 2015 Tipping Competition |
Aussie Rules, Australia's unique brand of football, will be kicking off on Thu 2nd April. The rule for this year's comp are the same as previous years, viz.
- One point a correct pick, nothing for a loss.
- Default if you forget to pick, wooden spoon score.
- Perfect picks score a bonus point.
- If needed, end-of-season tiebreaker for the podium spots will be HoF v Spoons.
Largest differential wins, or if the differential is equal, most weekly HoF wins. - Deadline will be the start of the first game each weekend - usually a Friday night
at 7:20pm or 7:50pm, with the occasional Thursday.
This is the 15th edition of the AFL tipping comp. Howie72 won last year's comp, followed by illiniman14 and 22crows. Can they retain their medals?
Sign-in and put your name down if you'd like to play.

I'm in. Hope not too late for first round picks as I have been moving house and have limited access to the net for now.

Richmond started the AFL season badly, trailing by 23 points early in the second quarter before taking control and winning comfortably. Melbourne won their opening round match since 2005 by defeating the Gold Coast. In a low scoring match, Sydney trailed Essendon by 34 points at three quarter time before coming alive in the final quarter to win by 12. Brisbane also made a dramatic comeback after trailing by 53 points but it proved too much and they went down at home by 12 points to Collingwood. The Western Bulldogs gave their new coach the perfect start by beating West Coast. St Kilda were not accurate enough at the end of their match against Greater Western Sydney and went down by 9 points. The biggest winning margin of the round was Adelaide's demolishing of North Melbourne by 77 points. The closest winning margin was Fremantle's 7 point victory at home to Port Adelaide. Hawthorn destroyed Geelong by 62 points and showed they are not yet ready to relinquish their titles in the last two seasons. The FunTrivia AFL competition was not as drama filled with 16 tipsters entering this season. As far as I know it was a friendly beginning and no one needs to face the disciplinary committee yet.wwe84 and illiniman14 began the season where they wanted to, with a weekly win of 7/9. The break between seasons did not phase illiniman14, remaining on the podium after finishing second last year.At the other end, BxBarracuda will be comforted to know there is only one direction to go from here and that is upwards after receiving the first spoon of the season with 3/9. |

The round began with West Coast securing a big win over Carlton who have now lost 12 of their last 15 games. The Western Bulldogs won again with an away victory over Richmond, the first time they have won their first two games since 2009. Greater Western Syndey were 27 points down at half time against Melbourne but turned it on in the second half with a Giants record 83 points to win easily in the end by 45 points. In the battle of the birds the Adelaide Crows overcame the Collingwood Magpies. Port Adelaide were restricted to a meagre 44 points at home as they got well-beaten by Sydney. After a poor opening game, Gold Coast players promised they would not repeat it against St Kilda and true to their word, they did not....it was worse. Geelong suffered their biggest home loss since 2006 as Fremantle dominated in winning by 44 points leaving Geelong at the bottom of the ladder. Essendon held a 35 point half time lead over the defending champion Hawthorn side before deja vu seemed to happen as they got completely outscored in the second half to be behind, however this time they kicked a goal in a last minute for a famous victory. In Melbourne they are still wondering when Brisbane will turn up after annihilating them by 82 points. We had 15 tipsters this week with ozfei running on default.Still no reports of FT foul play but BxBarracuda and ozfei may soon have to resort to jersey pulling to remain in touch.ozzz2002 somehow looked into the future and saw that St Kilda would win away at Gold Coast. BxBarracuda did the same and forsaw the last minute winning goal by Essendon over Hawthorn. However, Dizart's crystal ball was a little clouded and the thrashing of Brisbane was obscured in his vision.paper_aero was the only weekly winner with 6/9 and jumps to the top of the podium though not a lot of room there as ghto4 and N-Bomb join him.Just as well BxBarracuda cannot fall any lower as he gains his second spoon in a row to begin the season, this time he is joined by Dizart and they both went 2/9. |

The round began with Collingwood taking on and destroying St Kilda at home by 77 points, their seventh win in a row over St Kilda. Carlton continued to sing the blues with their third loss in a row to begin the season, losing a fiery contest to Essendon. The Adelaide rain was too much for Melbourne leaving the Crows unbeaten so far this season. A poor first half cost Greater Western Sydney against the Sydney with the Swans' experience triumphing to also remain unbeaten. In a close encounter of the football kind, Port Adelaide got their first win with a narrow victory over North Melbourne. In a battle of the big cats, the Richmond Tigers proved to have a lot more bite in defeating the Brisbane Lions by 79 points. The Lions remain bottom of the table and if there is one silver lining it is the loss was less than the 82 point defeat last week. After last round's surprise loss, Hawthorn got back to winning ways with a convincing victory over an injury depleted Bulldogs. The Geelong Cats clawed their way back from a half time deficit to beat Gold Coast and secure their first win of the season, leaving Gold Coast winless. In the West Coast derby, Fremantle comfortably beat the West Coast Eagles by 30 points to complete the round and remain unbeaten.A full house of tips this week.BxBarracuda is still refusing to grab hold of the jerseys of those above him and drops a further point behind. This round saw no upsets and that reflected in the tipping results where we achieved 127/143 (BxBarracuda did not tip the first match being late with his tips) or a 88.81% strike rate.Choosing all favourites worked well for paper_aero, gtho4, N-Bomb, 22 crows, chogobad and ozfei who all got perfect 9/9 rounds and a bonus point each. The spoon was secured by wwe84 with 6/9, last round this score achieved a weekly win.The perfect round and subsequent bonus point from paper_aero, gtho4 and N-Bomb saw these three remain on top of the podium and increase their lead over the chasing pack to three points.. |

The round began with Melbourne celebrating their first Friday night match in almost three years by winning away to Richmond in the wet in the first of the round's upsets. ANZAC Day began with St Kilda taking their home game (and ozzz2002's hopes) across the Tasman Sea to Wellington and were leading at half time, then Carlton dashed all hopes and came away with a 40 point victory. Collingwood showed how pesky magpies can be with a win over Essendon. The sun seems to be fading on the Gold Coast as they went down to GWS by 66 points, the biggest win the Giants have recorded in their short history. Port Adelaide Power shocked Hawthorn early and were leading by 58 points in the second quarter before the Hawks began their comeback and got to within eight points by the time the final siren indicated the end of the match, much to the Power's relief. Fremantle lead by 48 points at half time against Sydney before another comeback began but they held on to win by 14 in a low scoring encounter to remain unbeaten after the first four rounds for the first time. Brisbane were overwhelmed once again, this time by West Coast, and remain winless at the bottom of the ladder. North Melbourne came from behind to beat Geelong. The Bulldogs stunned the Crows with a very impressive 57 point win to end Adelaide's unbeaten start to the season.A full house of tips this week. This round saw plenty of upsets and that reflected in the tipping results. Last round we achieved 127/143 but this week it dropped to 61/144.Weekly wins went to wwe84, chogobad, ozfei, Howie71 and N-Bomb with 5/9, everyone else got less than 50%. It was not only St Kilda that dashed ozzz2002's hopes, every team other than West Coast Eagles joined them and this saw ozzz2002 take home the spoon with a season low 1/9.The weekly win by N-Bomb sees him take sole possession of the lead while BxBarracuda's jersey grabbing helps him close up to one point behind at the bottom. |

Carlton were singing the blues on Friday night after a 75 point demolition from the beaks of the Magpies, giving Collingwood a third straight victory. The fur was flying as the Cats edged the Tigers by 9 points to get their season back on track a little. The Bulldogs took a bite out of the Swans wings at a sodden SCG and came away impressive four point winners to maintain a superb start to the season. In the battle of Queensland, Gold Coast got their first win in style by thumping Brisbane by 64 points, leaving the Lions as the only winless team. Hawthorn were determined to avoid a slow start against North Melbourne and their best opening quarter of the season saw then succeed and run out eventual 60 point winners but it my come at a cost with upcoming trips to the judiciary likely for their captain and one of the vice captains. The West Coast Eagles kept the Giants to their second lowest score ever in soaring to a massive 87 point win. Fremantle maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 68 point thumping of Melbourne. Essendon edged St Kilda by two points in a thriller with the lead changing eleven times. Port Adelaide outlasted their rivals in the Adelaide derby to continue the surge up the table.A full house of tips this week.Last week ozzz2002 got a less than impressive 1/9 but this round he takes the weekly win with a much more impressive 8/9. The spoon goes to wwe84 with 3/9.ozfei was the only one to believe the Bulldogs would continue their superb form by winning away at Sydney.N-Bomb increases his lead to two points while BxBarracuda is still lurking at the bottom, letting everyone forget about him before he strikes to surge upwards. |

Friday night saw the first of many upsets when Geelong flew out of the gates to take a 52 point lead into half time over Collingwood, the Magpies closed the gap to 23 points in the last quarter but that was as close as they got. North Melbourne held a narrow lead at halftime over Richmond and six straight goals in the third quarter cemented their win. St Kilda were 55 points down away to the Western Bulldogs early in the third quarter before staging a massive comeback to stun their hosts, only the second time in their history they have come from 55 points down to win. Greater Western Sydney continued their giant killing ways by claiming the scalp of Hawthorn, coming from 27 points down for arguably their greatest victory in their short history. Back to normal for Gold Coast after their first win of the season last round with Adelaide comfortably taking a 41 point victory. Sydney returned to the MCG for the first time since the 2014 Grand Final against Hawthorn and this time the result was different, a fast start was enough to account for Melbourne. Fremantle were too clinical at home for Essendon and remain unbeaten. Brisbane gained their first win of the season with a hard fought narrow victory over fellow strugglers Carlton. In an exciting final match, West Coast overcame Port Adelaide and in the process made it a Western Australia one-two at the top of the table.George95 was running on default fuel this week..A handful of weekly winners this round with paper_aero, ASA, Dizart, Sypher and chogobad all managing 5/9. BxBarracuda received the sole spoon with 3/9. It does not appear that any of the bottom four want anyone else to get their spoons. No one picked Hawthorn to lose at the Giants but we all saw Adelaide winning away at the Gold Coast.N-Bomb's lead is cut in half to one point after paper_aero's weekly win. BxBarracuda is in danger of being cast adrift and having to fend for himself. |

Friday night saw the end of a bad week for Essendon, going down by 11 points to North Melbourne after the World Anti-Doping Agency announced it will appeal the AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal's decision to clear 34 past and present Essendon players of using a banned substance. Adelaide temporarily moved into second place after a hard fought, despite big winning margin, victory over St Kilda. Hawthorn took last week's shock loss out on a hapless Melbourne side to thrash them by 105 points. GWS continue on their merry way with a record 78 point win over Carlton. A dominant last quarter saw Sydney overcome Geelong. On a very wet night, Gold Coast conceded a flood of goals to crash to a 92 point loss to an in-form West Coast Eagles. The Bulldogs gave Fremantle a scare when drawing level with 6 minutes left but the Dockers showed why they are unbeaten and came away 13 point winners. In a thrilling match with a number of lead changes, Richmond just did enough to narrowly beat Collingwood. After winning for the first time this season last week, Brisbane followed it up with a comfortable home win over a disappointing Port Adelaide to move off the bottom of the table. We had a full field of 16 this week.Sypher makes it back-to-back weekly wins with an impressive 8/9 while BxBarracuda is not quite as impressive in earning a back-to-back spoons with 4/9.Two games were picked by all of us, these being the wins by the Hawthorn Hawks and West Coast Eagles.N-Bomb's maintains his one point lead at the top with the first three all scoring 7/9. BxBarracuda drops further behind and must now be feeling a little desperate to make up the five point gap to Dizart immediately above him. |

Friday night saw Geelong continue to pile the misery on Carlton with a massive 77 point victory, giving the Blues their worst start to the season since 2002. A spirited first half comeback from St Kilda kept them in touch at half time against West Coast but a second half slaughter saw the Eagles soaring high at full time to maintain their second spot in the standings. For the first time in their history GWS won for the third time in a row, comfortably beating Adelaide. Collingwood travelled to the Gold Coast and cruised to an easy win, leaving their hosts just above the bottom on points difference. Last year's grand final saw Hawthorn beat Sydney by 63 points, this time the Swans jumped out to a big lead early before the Hawks mounted a comeback to lead by 12 with 8 minutes left, Sydney showed the toughness they were missing last time to take a narrow victory. Fremantle won for the 8th time this season by crushing North Melbourne by 73 points to remain unbeaten. Brisbane could not make it three wins in a row and though they only trailed Essendon by 5 points at halftime, they faded in the second half to go down by 58. After 3 losses in a row, Melbourne returned to winning form in style with a comprehensive upset win over the Western Bulldogs. Port Adelaide continued their dismal form this season, going down to Richmond at home by 33 points.BxBarracuda was absent this week so ran on default fuel. One weekly winner this time, gtho4 only missed the two games none of us tipped correctly and achieved 7/9 correct. Brisbane's loss saw 7 of us miss out on a spoon, instead the only spoon went to chogobad.Three games were picked by all of us, these being the wins by the Geelong, West Coast and Fremantle. On the other had, two games were picked by no one, being the Melbourne and Richmond wins.N-Bomb's maintains his one point lead at the top with gtho4 overtaking paper_aero for second place, these three have opened up a small gap at the top. Running on default saw BxBarracuda fall even further behind and now has a 7 point deficit to overcome. |

Carlton sacked their coach during the week but it did no good as they were once again demolished on Friday night with Sydney completing a 60 point victory. The defending champion Hawthorn easily won at home as expected over Gold Coast but they have yet to win back-to-back this season. Melbourne took their home game against Port Adelaide to Alice Springs and it seemed to work well with the Demons leading by 24 points in the second quarter however by the end of the game they were behind by 61, is this what the Power need to kick-start their season? GWS came crashing back to earth when well beaten by the Bulldogs to end their winning streak at three and by a strange coincidence it also ended the Bulldogs losing streak at three. The 'Dreamtime at the G' clash turned into a nightmare for Essendon as they went down to a resurgent Richmond in a tough and close game. In another low scoring and close game, Fremantle maintained their unbeaten start to the season with hard fought victory away at Adelaide. Despite a top start where they lead by 29 points in the first quarter, Brisbane could not maintain momentum and St Kilda cruised to a comfortable win in the end. North Melbourne looked well in charge when leading Collingwood by 39 points at halftime but the Magpies had other ideas and a superb 9 goal third quarter sealed the comeback and they held on until the end. West Coast dominated every statistic against Geelong except goal kicking accuracy but that did not matter as they overwhelmed the Cats by 56 points to maintain second place.BxBarracuda and illiniman14 were running on default fuel this week.22crows tipped an impressive 8/9 to take the weekly win while gtho4 became the first of the leading trio to falter and receive a spoon with 4/9.The first two games of the round saw perfect picks by everyone but it did not last.N-Bomb took advantage of gtho4's spoon to open up a three point gap at the top. Running on default saw BxBarracuda fall even further behind and now has a 9 point deficit to overcome. |
