Occasionally I experience my Netscape (ver 4.77) operating fine on various web pages but then hanging up on FunTrivia--but not all the time. Then nothing else will load, even pages I had previously been to that session. Does this happen to anyone else using Netscape?

Just for the heck of it, I started up an old version of Internet Explorer (version 4.71) that came with the icon on my desktop when I got my Dell computer in Jan '98 (it hadn't been updated since then). It seemed to work just fine and I could then visit various internet sites.

When I used to play multiplayer trivia I could never play on netscape, but had no problem on IE.

rootl7,

I am having exactly the same problem with that version of Netscape, too. I had just put it down to a fault with my computer, but in light of your post, I am re-thinking that idea. I have cleared all caches, cookies etc., and still no improvement.

I.E. works fine (albeit slowly).

Any ideas, anyone?

Let me tell you my story...

I used to be an avid Netscape person. LOVED the thing, hated IE. Was a rabid fan, in fact.

Then came the 4.x versions. IMHO, they were terrible. Kept crashing. The last versions I had would, after a month or two, just stop loading pages and totally hang up. I'd have to reinstall.

I got sick and tired of that and tried the old IE that had been sitting on my computer since we got it. Worked wonderful and it was easy to transfer my Bookmarks.

In short, even though I hate Microsoft (I can't wait to see how Lindows will work!) and loved Netscape, I use IE now. I don't know if it was just me who was having thee troubles or what, but all I know is that when I had to go back to using Netscape 2.02, I decided it was time to make the switch.

(As a side note, I also used Opera for a time and loved that little program. It's not big like IE and Netscape, but it's a hard worker!)

You're freaking me out Beth! I just heard of Lindows for the first time yesterday, and now I'm seeing it again! Isn't that weird how things like that happen?

i always used netscape for browsing internet for the last few years and haven't always been that impressed with it, but put it down to the isp and that my machine needed to be cleaned up. now i'm wondering whether netscape contributed to the amount of times that the pc crashed.

when i got a 'very nice man' to clean it up for us, he told us that he would change our access to the internet to IE rather than Netscape. he said that netscape was very unreliable, which is confirmed by what you all have said.

i have found my internet access to be a lot smoother now, tho my pc has been cleaned up and we also have broadband access to the net too, so i'm sure they contribute to it's smoothness too.

by the way what is lindows?

Lady Macbeth, it was interesting to read your comment about Opera. Our local computer expert/guru, Nick Francesco, also loves Opera and thinks it is rock-solid. Was that your impression? Why did you stop using it?

I stopped using Opera because my free trial expired and I didn't want to have to install the thing every month. I liked it - was pretty powerful and didn't take up much space in the hard drive. Of course, some things specifically made for either IE or Netscape don't work so well for it, but I thought Opera was wonderful.

Lindows is a Linux-based (=BETTER than Microsoft) system which sort of looks like Windows.

Chalk up another one who has been blaming her computer for the problems with Netscape rather than the other way round. Am currently using my very old IE because Netscape has locked up again.

I'm soon to be getting my computer 'cleaned up', and will then, if necessary update IE. I have some problems with the old version (eg can't open attachments in Hotmail, can't use the bold function here, get loads of javascript errors) but hope that a newer version will correct these problems.

I prefer Netscape for a lot of things, but could change my thinking in view of what has been pointed out to me here.

Thanks everyone for opening my eyes.

Well, let me put it this way.. if a person like me who HATED IE and made fun of my friends who used it, I haven't touched Netscape in about a year and didn't even install it on my new computer.

however, I still love the older versions (1.16 - which fits perfectly on a floppy disk and 2.02) and there are some things which annoy me about IE... But I don't think I'll go back to Netscape.
