2nd leg of FT Triple Crown

141st Kentucky Derby

This year's Run For The Roses is almost here. The scoring system for the Kentucky Derby comp is the same as the Grand National comp earlier this month:

RULES
o The rules for this comp are simple, and are the same as last year and the year before.
o Pick 10 horses in the order you think they'll finish, 1st to 10th.
o Points: for any horse out of the 10 you've picked, which finishes in the first five places:
      1st : 10 pts
      2nd : 6 pts
      3rd : 3 pts
      4th : 2 pts
      5th : 1 pt
o The order of your picks will be used as a tiebreaker to separate any dead-heats or ties.
o If two players have identical picks x10, whoever posts first wins the tie-breaker.
DEADLINE
The race starts on Saturday 2nd May 2015 at 6:34pm. Tips close on
    the hour at
6:00pm with a short period of grace of a few minutes.
There is a count-down clock to the race start time on this webpage,
near the top RH corner : kentuckyderby.com.
The following six pages (of many out there) have details of the contenders and their form:After the second closing on 23rd March there were 48 horses still in the running to qualify (first acceptances
closed on 18th January with 429 horses nominated). The field of 20 runners and their post positions (barrier
draw) will be announced three days before the race at around 5:30pm ET on Wed 29th April.
Picks x10 can be posted at any time in this thread, even if the field of 20 hasn't been announced! Please note that there is no need to pick reserves. If your horse is scratched, so be it (we've got half the field covered with our 10 picks). However, as is the case with any tipping comp in here, you are free to edit your picks at any time before the deadline.

  • there were no upsets this year. The bookies saw their stachels emptied at Churchill Downs as all the favourites came home. If all of us were at the track we may have needed a wheelbarrow to carry our winnings out of the track, lol
  • countbacks were required for all podium positions .. we had a six-way tie for first! Last year we had a dead-heat for first and a six-way tie for third.
  • Sypher, Howie72 & George95 were the podium finishers as they all chose the winner with their #2 pick.
  • the medals were decided by a second tie-breaker, being where they put Firing Line (the 2nd placed horse) in their picks .. Sypher had him as his #1pick, Howie72 as his #4 pick and George95 as his #8 pick.
  • the split between 4th and 5th place required three tie-breakers.
  • and 6th of the six was gtho4, who was always out of the running for a podium finish as he chose the winner with his #9 pick.
  • tie-breakers were required for all spots in the standings except for the wooden spoon, which wwe84 won solo.
  • paper_aero and wwe84 chose the winner with their #1 pick.
  • wwe84 was the winner of last month's Grand National comp, which means no-one can win the FT Triple Crown, again.
  • this was the 13th running of the Kentucky Derby comp at FT .. no-one has defended his or her title, and buck5ley is the only person to have won this twice (he won this in 2005 and again in 2007).
  • the defending title-holder was 22crows .. Howie72 was runner-up last year.
  • that completes the second leg of the FT Triple Crown. The third leg is six months away .. the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.

That has to be a first!

A very close-run race, and congrats to the tipsters who survived the tie-break process. Also, thanks to GT for doing all the work.

Well, that stings to get all 5 but land outside the podium. But, I did hit the trifecta in real life so that eases the pain. Well done to Sypher, Howie, and George!

I'm shocked as I've never come first in any of the horse racing comps. Well done to the other podium placements and to George for running it.
