In May's "normal" thread there were a few pics that involved wood in some way - either a tree, woods, birds perching on wood, carvings... so this month's theme is wood. However it comes!

In New Hampshire, it's not too early to be thinking about next winter. Actually the people who own the farm sell firewood. But the picture was taken May 31 - 2013.

Wood you say? How about Tane Mahuta (The Lord of the Forest) in the Waipoua Forest in Northland. Tane Mahuta is the largest kauri tree in New Zealand at about 47 to 50 metres high (depending on sources) and estimated to be 2300 years old. According to Maori mythology Tane is the son of Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatuanuku, the earth mother. Tane was the child that tore his parent’s parental embrace and once done set about clothing his mother in the forest that is there today. All living creatures of the forest are regarded as Tane’s children.

Out for a drive today with a fellow FunTrivia type, we happened upon this quiet wooded stream.

This worry tree has a piece of wood attached, with carved out handprints onto which you can place your hands in order to deposit your worries. It is also adorned with much "I wos 'ere" style graffiti cut into its trunk.

I think this looks like a troll, a really evil troll. Or a goblin. Or a very nasty piece of dried fish. Oh go on, squint and see if you can see what I see - two eyes, teeth, gaping jaws, a nasty sneer...

Of course it's none of those things, it's a tree - and it's alive. It's a yew tree, ancient, hollow, and in some places missing branches which have been lopped - but it's still growing and will probably outlive all of us. Yew trees were sacred to the Ancient Britons which is why you find so many of them in churchyards - the yews were there first, the churches were built where the yews were in order to associate the religion with these sacred entities.

The yew trees in Painswick churchyard in the Cotswolds number 99 and the 100th just will not grow. They say.

Do they say that when they're pouring salt on to its roots or pushing copper nails into the bark?

The Duden waterfalls in Antalya have their source in the Karst topography of the region. The Upper Falls are part of a national park while the Lower Falls drop directly into the Mediterranean Sea and can be seen by boat.
