Copa America 2015The 2015 Copa América, the main international football tournament for national teams in South America kicks off in Chile from 11 June to 4 July 2015. Uruguay is the defending champion. Twelve teams will compete, the ten member of CONMEBOL and two guests from CONCACAF – Mexico and Jamaica. Matches will be held in league stage followed by knockout from the quarters. We can have a comp covering all the matches (you have to be ready to drop in at short notice for the last rounds, since there won't be much time between putting up rounds after the league stage). Howie72 is the defending champion from the Last Copa America in 2011 with BxBarracuda and srini701 on the podium. srini701 won the first tipping comp in this event in 2007. 16 people were on board for our comp four years ago, but guess we will be lucky to get anywhere near that number now   Sign up here if you'd like to take part please. Tie-break rules for comp: In case people finish equal on points, they will be separated in the following order: 1. Hof vs Spoon differential 2. If still equal, person with more HoFs is placed higher 3. If still equal, person with more number of right tips (without bonus points) is placed higher

A warm welcome to the 13 who lined up for the opening round of Copa America 2015...Hopefully I will do a decent job as your organizer, as soccer is not my forte 9 of us have returned from the 16 who took part in 2011, and we welcome 4 "newcomers" to the comp ( Dizart, illiniman14, PaulE, wwe84). BxBarracuda, Sypher, rxbigdawg, toocool4u, rossian, szabs, triviapaul are all no-shows from the 2011 line-up. Hosts Chile will look to correct the one glaring absence from their trophy cabinet...they are the ONLY major South American soccer nation NOT to have won the Copa America in its 99-year history! They did take a good first step, beating Ecuador quite comfortably in the opening match. Mexico and Bolivia then played out a dull goalless draw (a result picked only by 1 here) before Uruguay eked out a win against minnows Jamaica. Hot favorites Argentina would have thought their opener was a smooth ride when they went 2-0 up in the first 36 minutes. Paraguay gave them a rude shock, clawing back to draw the match (again, a result only 1 of us got right here). Brazil won their 11th match in a row under new coach Dunga, struggling to a win over Peru, and Venezuela pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament so far with their first ever victory over Uruguay in the history of the competition. Dave and srini701 take the first HoFs here with 4 right picks as we tallied almost 50% as a group (not bad at all!). George95, LeoDaVinci, wwe84 start with spoons but the latter two have bonus points to keep them along with the huge middle rung. I have one day earlier as the post's date as I am not sure about the kick-off times around the world. I will however accept tips till the kick-off in the first match (which is indicated in the tipping thread)

We welcome Lpez in this round of the comp...He starts with default score (2). The first two matches of the round saw goals galore, as Bolivia beat Ecuador 3-2 and Mexico fought back to hold the hosts Chile to a thrilling 3-3 draw! ozzz2002 managed to foresee the Bolivia win, so gets a bonus for that pick. The goals then became a trickle as the next 4 matches all ended 1-0, with Paraguay and Argentina having the upper hand in group B and Peru staying alive with their win over Venezuela. But Brazil's 11 match winning streak came to an end at the hands of Colombia and much to their chagrin, now have to play the rest of the tournament without their influential captain, Neymar (anyone remembers what happened the last time they played a big match without Neymar? yes, it was the 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany in THAT World Cup semifinals a year back  ) PaulE takes the round's HoF along with illiniman14, and throwing in a bonus point as well (for picking a draw in the Brazil match), he is now in the lead along with ozzz2002. dg_dave, srini701 share the spoons (with wwe84) and drop back.

This has been a quiet and strange COPA so far. No team has threatened to dominate and run away with it yet. Hosts Chile won their final match, thrashing Bolivia 5-0, but were also held to a draw by a Mexico B side. Argentina struggled to win against Jamaica, Brazil is not their usual self but managed to win without Neymar, Colombia did just enough to get to the quarters....Maybe all the teams will hit a reset button and the tournament will kick off from the quarters onwards Mexico was picked as a semifinalist by 4 of us here, but they didn't even make it past the groups. Paraguay, last edition's finalist, was nobody's choice to make the last 4 and here they are....but other than wwe84 and Howie72, none of us can have 4 semifinalists (Chile plays Uruguay and Argentina plays Colombia ) Howie had a near perfect round (missing only Mexico's loss) and flies up to podium spot....d g_dave and srini701 are still inseparable after half the tournament, while half the field picked up spoons this round despite a decent 50% pick!

The expected goal glut did not really come about in the quarters. Defending Champions Uruguay, which had won its last six Copa America quarter finals, could not make it seven in a row and fell to hosts Chile....9 of us picked Chile to go through. Bolivia- Peru was exciting and ended up as the match with the most goals in the quarters. Peru won it big time and faces the hosts in the first semis. 11 of us got it right this time, and another 3 of us picked this to be the match with the most goals too! Argentina and Colombia played out a goalless draw, something none of us saw coming here. None of us even picked an upset win! Argentina won through on penalties, and the match had the least number of goals in the quarters, something 5 of us at least got right... Brazil had never conceded a goal to Paraguay in Copa after taking the lead. They did this time and for the second Copa in a row, Paraguay dumped Brazil out on penalties. srini701 picked the draw, giving him a sole pick bonus. This round's winner gtho4 got both the most and least goals right (so did Howie72  ), and jumped up the ranks a bit. 4 of us took the spoons this round, including ozzz2002, and he falls off the perch because of that. The semifinals are on tonight (Monday night), so if you haven't lodged your picks yet, there's still time for you to do so...

The goals DID finally come.....in the semifinals! and they washed away Peru and Paraguay, took at least one of us here ( srini701) by complete surprise , overturned our table and set up a mouth-watering final round...both ON the field, and here IN our comp Chile took their expected place in the finals beating Peru 2-1 (all 3 goals scored by Chileans only) but will face the daunting task of taking on the red-hot Argentines, who hit Paraguay for a six (literally) if they are to win their maiden Copa title....Most of us here picked both the matches with relative ease, except ozzz2002 (who thought the Argentines would draw), wwe84 (who expected the hosts to crash out) and srini701 (who didn't expect any goals in BOTH the matches  ) ... Those awesome picks by srini701 helped PaulE and Howie72 to clamber back to the top. Our advanced picks for semis have been added to the round's score (wwe84 had a real chance to take the HoF, as he was the ONLY one of us with 3 live picks in semis) and LeoDaVinci slipped on that count as he was the ONLY one not to lodge advance tips  Only wwe84 ( Brazil  ) and ozzz2002 ( Uruguay  ) do NOT have a live pick for the final (+3/1)... Dizart picked Chile to win it all, while the rest of us ALL picked Argentina....Let's see how it all goes! The 3rd place match is on Friday, so please lodge your picks before that.

ended a 99-year wait for the COPA title and became the latest country to win the title beating Argentina in a penalty shoot out after 120 minutes of regular play failed to produce a single goal! It's heartbreak yet again for Messi and Co...supposedly the "finest" generation of Argentine players and yet, without a major title to show after 3 final losses (Copa 2011, 2015 and World Cup 2014) Dizart capitalized on his advance pick of Chile to ride all the way to the podium in an astonishing final round (none of us picked the final draw and Dizart and N-Bomb get bonus points for picking Chile to win)... Howie72, Dizart, PaulE all tied at the top, but on count back, Howie72 retains his Copa title form 2011 as he has no spoons and the other 2 had one each.... Dizart and PaulE share the silver as they are even on all counts...
