I dont seem to understand why spelling is so important in the quizzes, I get questions wrong that I know the answer to just because I cant seem to spell. things like guarding, which I happened to spell gaurding, isnt it obvious what I mean? philedelphia or philadelphia, does it really make a difference. Im sorry my spelling skills are not what they could be but I dont think it is fair to get questions marked wrong for that. Otherwise, i love the site it is my fave

While I understand that getting questions wrong because you misspell an answer may be frustrating to you, correct spelling is important and does matter.

As a practical matter, it would be impossible, when designing a fill-in-the-blank answer, to try and guess all the possible ways that people could misspell a word! It's much simpler and saner to accept only the correct answer.

I would suggest, if you aren't sure of the proper spelling to an answer, that you look it up before typing in the answer. Use it as a learning experience!

Hi Pandora, good thing your question isn't as bad as opening the famous box with all the ills of the world!

As CrisW said spelling is important and that's why we encourage all quizmakers to structure their quizzes without fill in the blank answers unless they are perfectly clear.
Many people don't understand this, but we've learned it by trial and error in our own work and editing.
In the past we accepted more quizzes with this sort of thing in it, and you might be taking some of those. Now however we are trying to guide people to making quizzes that are more foolproof.

I keep telling people that if they themselves took their own quiz and got an answer wrong then they'd feel bad. Especially on their favorite subject.
They often try to put the wrong spelling in then.
But we don't allow this here.

The only time would be "watercolor" and "watercolour", American and British spellings.
And even then it would be better to avoid it.

Good luck.

All that. Plus, quizzes are not graded by humans (it would be impossible.) They're graded by a computer algorithm; robots don't know from different spellings. They accept only the ones they're given. And they're only given the correct ones. Misspelled correct answers are not correct.
